But you'll see that the 4.0 is better IQ, than the 2.8.

With the better ISO that cameras give now, there's not much need to worry about it. I'll take the IQ.

It's not always about light, sometimes (for me, almost always) it's about subject isolation. Although, I find I rarely open up more than f/4 for horses, I do frequently for people and nature shots. You know me, though...I the narrow dof!

good point, I know you love your bokeh!

although, you can get pretty good subject isolation even at 4.0, depending on your angles.

Then you need to drop 5K and get the 2.0

Yes, I'm silly about it! And you can, but I find myself unhappy with the isolation provided by my 24-105 f/4 wide open unless the background is pretty far away. But then, I'm using a cropped sensor. You get better isolation at the same aperture with the ff cams, of course.

oh yeah.. that is not going to be as good - a background situation.. I'm thinking of shots like this, this is at 4.0 - and agreed, I wonder how big a factor FF is

Gorgeous! And I think it's one of those situations where it's good that you've retained so much detail in the background. She echoes the main subject nicely, and she's pretty. Now, had it been a pimply dude with braces and puke on his shirt, you'd probably wish you had f/1.2 or so...

There are a number of primes I'd like to add to my line-up. I actually use my 100 f/2.8 macro for portraits quite a bit - it's nice. I wouldn't mind a 35 too, again, given my cropper affliction.

haha... I think I'd want a f/0.2 in that case...

The 200mm 2.0 is the boken machine for Canon or Nikon. With Canon there's the older 1.8 as well.

The 5D2 ended up getting taken off the order because they kept pushing the delivery date on us

We ended up with another 7D instead. My Dad is killing me shooting in full auto mode all the time

When I decide to go FF I'm think I'll just pick up a used 1ds III or save up for the FF 1DIV

It just happened the other day, so I didn't update the post.

We ALMOST pulled the trigger on the 85L also, but am going to wait for FF with that lens. I could use some good stobes, stands, and other studio stuff right now. I'm hoping there's a 580EXII under the tree, but not holding my breath on it.

oh ok. can I assume the only reason you wanted the 5D2 over the 7 was the FF?

Got it through Dell 20% bing cb, they said it was in stock, then it wasn't. Delivery date was the 17th, on the 16th they changed it to 1/6/10. Was afraid they would change it again on the 5th. Dad wanted something by Christmas.

I tried to talk him into a used 1DIII but he didn't want to buy a body used. Lenses ok, body no..haha

yeah man sorry to say but Dell's "delivery date" doesn't really mean much. my folks just got a new computer and the date kept pushing back on the site, it said 1/10/2010 on last look, and we're all wondering wtf is going on. the computer ended up being shipped on 12/12... I ordered a computer from them in August and it had a 3 week delivery date on it, I got it delivered within one week!

Yeah, the lens made it here in 2 days after ordering. I'll see when people over at POTN start getting their 5dii's from Dell. I should have told him to wait, but he was fed up and antsy.

Oh yeah! It wasn't a show, just a photo day at the barn, and the owner wanted a group shot of all 50 owners with their horses. The group shot got canceled because only about 1/2 could make it on the day she chose - she wants to try again in the spring. I did do 7 "mini-sessions" that day, though - no complaints!

I just wrote a whole run-down about the differences between some of the horses & owners & their behaviors & expectations - how they influenced the shoot and the outcome, but I went over the frickin 5 minute edit window, and it's all lost.

Anyway, I'd be happy to discuss specifics if you have any questions or critiques.

The 70-200 f2.8 IS came in today!!! Love the bokeh at 2.8 and stopped down to 4 the IQ is extremely close to that of the f4L version.

Some really great shots, wndr.

I noticed that you are still getting some quirky things happening with your site. I was looking at the Murtha gallery and asI hover my mouse over the images, the pagination gets all funky. I'm not sure if there is a way to leave room in the formating for the highlite frame so that when it does appear everything else can stay in the same place.
