This is stupid. This will only help the sales of the sigma 50.

I can't speak for Nikon, but with this Canon news AND with Sony's 2 50mm f1.4 offerings, as mentioned by Jonathan, it really WILL help Sigma's 50mm f1.4 HSM

(Sony's offerings are either the Zeiss 50mm f1.4 @$1500 or their regular 50mm f1.4 which is a sub par lens, and it's not that cheap either, I think like around $450 MSRP. Right now there's a Sigma $100 rebate for their 50mm f1.4 HSM and it comes out to be $399, so it's even cheaper lol)

Yup. which Canon needs to rethink their marketing issues. giving less and charging more isn't gaining more revenue.

Well I'd still buy it if canon improves the optics/sharpness, which I'm sure they will do. Also put in the more reliable and better ring based USM motor instead of the micro USM motor in the current 50mm 1.4 (which IIRC is the only mid/high end prime to have and why the motor is known to break). And if the body is built better.

If they can do all those then I'd be ok with the loss of 2/3rd of a stop since I rarely would shoot that wide open.

Inclusion of IS would be a bonus to me.

i guess if it does happen. 50mm for canon won't be the cheapest lens on their market anymore.

Maybe they'll keep the thrifty fifty?

Like an IS and non-IS version?

I highly doubt Canon will drop the 50 1.8 "nifty/thrifty 50" - it's a gateway lens for people.
If all your prime options are $300+, I doubt a good chunk of people would ever experiment beyond the kit lenses.

no, they are dropping the 50mm f1.4 for a higher quality f1.8

Yeah - that's what I would expect... it's in line with other moves to go IS over wider aperture.

Do you guys think the 50 1.8 IS will be as sharp/sharper as the 1.4 at 1.8? Guess we'll have to see the MTF charts.

I'm a few thousand views away from 1M total views on Flickr. I plotted the past year:

So basically the past 12 months have seen more views than all the previous years since I joined flickr.

That 100k+view spike was a pic that hit the frontpage on Reddit. Crazy.

Here's my problem with it. knowing Canon. Anything prime and IS, is atleast 500 bucks or so. Sigma's 50 1.4 is right now 399 if im not mistaken when i last checked. Unless there is a significant improvement in optics id rather buy the sigma.

There's always the TFP models in Model Mayhem

(as both you and Miz know, I sometimes hit up the "escort service" girls in backpack.com for boudoir photography. No $$$ involved and no "trades" )

article is spot on, you work with what you can afford.

and if you don't have a budget for it, there's plenty of TFP models out there. PLENTY. you just have to either know them or know how to approach them.

So Nikon sues Polaroid for copying the 1 series camera.

http://petapixel.com/2013/10/15/niko...ges-design-j1/

Nikon Sues Polaroid, Claims the iM1836 Infringes on the Design of the 1 Series

It’s not uncommon for cameras to look similar in this day and age. Even the Sony A7 and A7r, which haven’t even been released yet, are being described as “OM-D-like” by rumor sites. But at what point does “similarity” cross the line to “infringement.”

Well, if you need an example, just take a look at Polaroid’s iM1836, because Nikon is filing a lawsuit against the company and camera manufacturer Sakar International over just that.

Considering that both times we’ve covered the iM1836 — when it was first announced and when we got our mitts on it at CES — we felt the need to point out how ridiculously similar it looked to Nikon’s 1-series ILCs, we shouldn’t be surprised that Nikon is suing Polaroid for infringement.

According to a press release, Nikon “negotiated amicably” with Sakar behind the scenes to try and solve this problem outside of court, but the manufacturer would have none of it, and so the Japanese company has been forced to get litigious.

“Nikon makes a great effort to create designs that can be differentiated from other companies’ products,” explains the press release, “as well as to strongly deter the imitation of its designs.”

The camera company is seeking an injunction against Sakar for “infringement of the design patent and trade dress right” of the Nikon 1 series. If upheld, the injunction would prevent Sakar from further production or sale of the Polaroid iM1836. Although, to be honest, we’re not sure how well it was selling in the first place.

FWIW, the bottom one doesn't look right either... almost as if they went the other way to make it look small...

This is the reason why I think I'll eventually pick up a tilt/shift lens, so I can do interior shots with little to no distortion

Over the last few days I have been looking at a fair number of photos on 500px and Flickr, and all I have to say is....

The saturation slider should cost extra money.

So many people seem to get their picture to a good place in Post and then they look at it and say, "Well, if +5 on saturation is good, +25 must be better!"

My eyes hurt. Nearly any RAW capture could benefit form some tweaks, including saturation, but it IMO it should be used like habanero pepper in cooking. Sparingly, for fear of overpowering.

You can't look at places such as those and base that judgement. Each site handle each image in a different way. You have to know how the site handles your images to get what you want on it. How your viewing the site can be effected as well. Depending on which browser you use and the display, viewing a desktop on or laptop.

In the last year, one thing I have done for showing my images on flickr and FB. I have to bump a few things up, I don't post over 1200x and I post at either 72 or 96dpi. Anything over that gets down rez and looks like crap, with those two sites.

With that said, I know what you are saying.

Interesting point about adjusting the image for the site Jup, hadn't thought about that.

Having said that, some of the pics just simply hurt to look at... and they would have been (IMO) fantastic pics without the bump in saturation.
