what I mean is, if you watch that Morgan Freeman thing and the thought in your head is "computers are amazing. frighteningly so" - I mean that is the same as saying wow, your camera takes awesome pictures!

pttl, I just disagree on every level. Give my 6 year old daughter that same iPad and have her at it with paint. Will you still say computers are amazing? Give my 60 year old mother-in-law a 1DX. She'll snap and shoot at eye level for everything that she sees. Will you still say the camera is amazing?

That's not a knock on the artist...I'm not taking anything away from him. He obviously has the skill and more importantly the vision to bring such a rendering to life.

I already read all that big text you just showed. And your statement is a fallacy. You are not an artist but you come off as speaking for the art world that that kind of detail is not possible.
The reason why that iPad painting shows great detail is because of small pixels. The paint brush cannot beat a pixel. But give a painter the biggest canvas you can find, as big as a building perhaps. The playing field will be even with the iPad and I'll bet the painter can put in the same level of detail as that iPad.

I'm not an artist? Do you know me? Do you know anything at all about me or what I do? Beside the obvious fact that I am a photo hobbyist? I think the answer to all of those questions would be no. So lets just move along.
Oh and I would never presume to speak for the "art world" as you like to call it.
I'll say it this way:
The iPad artist is clearly skilled. Would he be able to achieve that level of detail that he did without a computer. I doubt it. I will add that I have clearly not seen all the hand rendered work of every artist on the planet. But, of the work I have seen, none of it looked as detailed as a photo. The computer is a means to an end. It is the tool with which he chooses to work. The tool doesn't have he vision it takes to accomplish what he did. pretty simple actually.
So I guess what you seem to want to argue is whether or not an artist, without a computer, can achieve the level of detail and realism that an artist with a computer can. I say no. That is simply based on the art I have been involved with and that I have seen in my life time. Is that the fallacy in my statement?
If you would like to get a canvas as "big as a building" and have an artist create such a rendering you let me know when I can go see it.

perhaps it is true now, but being an artist myself (I draw, have drawn since I was a kid) - and an old skool one at that - I can't help but disagree. The very existence of pixels means its not nearly as accurate an image as something drawn or painted with a brush. Obviously with today's high resolution displays this is not really a factor anymore, as we go by what is visible to the eye.
Also having tried design and drawing on a computer, my personal impression is that it is insurmountably harder to draw on a digital device, even using a stylus or digitizer, and achieve natural looking results. And that is why this ipad video is so impressive. Just my 2 cents on the matter.

^ Ahhh I didn't mean it like that. I meant the tip of a paint brush cannot be drawn to the size of a pixel, that's why the paint brush can't get in the same amount of detail as what is shown on that iPad.

Gees what have I started. I've seen a finished picture of the render and thought it was a photograph. I thought no f@cking way this can be a drawn an iPad and then I watched the video and learned that I'm a talentless POS.
