I'm looking for a camera that I could take with me when going out... I don't need something fancy. Kinda want something like a S100 or so in size.

What are you going to be shooting mainly? Regardless, I think if you have that kind of funds, I would get good glass first, instead of going thru that phase later where you realize you want better lenses and have to deal with selling the mediocre ones. I think everybody has gone thru that phase.

the cheapest used D3 (Nikon's oldest digital FF body) is still pricey. You might be able to get just the body.
I say skip FF for now and just get yourself a good used D90 or D5000, and might have enough left for 1-2 good used lens(es), if you want to go the Nikon route.
Or a used Canon 60D and 1-2 good lenses.

What about picking up a good used body, and then pick a couple of good lens'? You can pick up a very lightly used Canon 7D for around 1K, then take your pick on lens' maybe another Tokina, and then something with some reach, probably bring you in right around 3K
I imagine that you could probably do something similar with Nikon as well.

pretty happy - just figured out I can easily use the $60 Yongnuo YN560 as a line-of-sight slave with the 580. All you do is set it to S1 mode and set the 580 to master mode. Cake. Eager to see what these will do in the 'studio' setting!

I'm trying to purchase a tripod for our S95. We'll be using this camera for our honeymoon trip at Bali. Would this Gorillapod work well for my purpose? I've never used this before.

Dumb question. How do you guys store your camera? Whenever I'm done shooting and put my camera back in its bag, I usually remove the lens I was using and store it separately to the body.
Do any of you store your camera with a lens attached at the ready?

Yeah I usually leave the lens on. The only time I transport the camera without any lens attached is if I'm using a smaller bag and it doesn't fit otherwise.

well lemme clarify this.
if im out shooting and i put away my camera, i just put it in the bag with the lens attached.
when i get home and putting my gear away then i take off the lens and put it in the bag the lens came with and also remove the battery on my camera.
