Thanks, Jeff. I would, but I'm not comfortable putting her baby's pics up in the forum. I know she wouldn't care about the dog.

I think turning down output wouldn't solve it. You'll still have harsh shadows.

Did you adjust the zoom head? Set it to a more wider angle. And also don't put it too close to the subject.

good advice, you can always try moving the light farther away and adjust as needed.

also, what was your EXIF for that shot?

Not talking about the lens, the zoom head of the flash.

If its more zoomed in, it will become more like a snoot with a more focused beam of light.

As far as my understanding

I think Jonathan was using the Cowboy Studio monolight.

This is MY guess... He was shooting with the aperture too wide, thus allowing too much light. But perhaps he wanted the Bokeh/DoF... in which case he should use some kind of ND filter... perhaps a 3 stop ND filter... and also as mentioned already... pulling the stand/monolight further away and/or lowering the power, and/or using something to defuse the light (all of the above) would also help

actually i was using a Yongnuo YN 560. It was the first time using it. i figured how to control the power on it but never really played around with it. I actually wasn't going for bokeh in that photo. But rewatching Zack Arias's One light video again. What i shouldve done was probably use my 430ex with the sto-fen diffuser on the shoot thru. then probably used 1/8 to 1/16 power.Shoot at F/8 to F/11 then if i want a better DOF then bump up the ISO to 400 or so. . But yea ken, i probably should get some ND filters. The softbox we talked about is on my primary things to buy.

I don't think it's necessary to get a softbox yet, depending on the style of lighting you want you can use a shoot thru umbrella.

Also you said the legs were flimsy, probably won't hold the weight of a softbox.

Don't give up yet, takes a lot if trial and error to master lighting.
