Roller Derby

My GF has taken up Roller Derby as a sport and she suggested I go along to a bout and take pictures. So I did. Little did I know I had neither the equipment nor the skills to take such photos. But like all things, time, money, and practice make a world of difference.

I started with shots like these:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/anachostic/8021859446/http://www.flickr.com/photos/anachostic/8021859446/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/anachostic/, on Flickr

Progressed to shots like these:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/anachostic/8246107784/http://www.flickr.com/photos/anachostic/8246107784/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/anachostic/, on Flickr

And now, I have shots like this:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/anachostic/8243599850/http://www.flickr.com/photos/anachostic/8243599850/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/anachostic/, on Flickr

I'm glad I didn't get completely discouraged after that first failed attempt.

Just curious....How are you able to get such sharpness being hand held? I assume you don't carry a tripod with you to the gym....and to the subway/train station.... etc

What's your secret? Maybe you are just one of those human tripod types...

The Ferrari was taken using the "Twilight" mode or MFNR feature (Multi Frames Noise Reduction) see link: http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/So...Twilight.shtml..

This was taken awhile back using the MFNR mode too
http://www.flickr.com/photos/63271580@N00/6796842506/http://www.flickr.com/photos/63271580@N00/6796842506/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/63271580@N00/, on Flickr

The subway shot was handheld, with Sony cameras, it's suppose to be a two stops advantage with the image stabilization, I was @16mm, by rule of thumb the shutter speed should be at lease 1/16, so one stop would = 1/8, two stops =1/4... So I was still "safe" @1/4 handheld

And FWIW...I HAVE gone to the gym with the tripod before

Pretty much all are one shot exposure except for the Ferrari and the parking meter posted above which were done with the MFNR (multi frames noise reduction). feature. But then there are the photos over at the HDR thread, which most are 3 shots - / + 3 post processed in Photomatix (old ones) or Nik HDR Pro plugin/Lightroom 4. Some are single exposure "tone map'd"
