2012 Porsche 911 - more details surface
With a market launch just around the corner, new details have emerged about the 2012 Porsche 911.
As usual, the 911 will be an evolution of the previous model. Keen-eyed observers will notice new lighting units, Panamera-style side mirrors, and a revised rear wing. A closer look will reveal the car is longer and wider than the 997, but only slightly.
Inside, the cabin will to get a major upgrade thanks to styling elements from the Panamera and Cayenne. Our spies haven't gotten close enough to snap pictures, but trust us, they're trying.
The car will continue to ride on a steel-intensive platform, but several weight saving measures will allow the car to weigh 1370kg (3020 lbs) - 45kg (99 lbs) less than today's model. Porsche has also modified the engine mounting points for improved weight distribution and better handling.
Under the hood, the Carrera will be outfitted with a revised 3.6-liter engine that produces 365 hp (272 kW / 370 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. The mid-level Carrera S will come with an updated 3.8-liter with 415 hp (309 kW / 421 PS) and 325 lb-ft (440 Nm) of torque, according to Autocar. Both will be mated to a six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed PDK.
To improve fuel efficiency, all 911s will come with an engine stop/start system and regenerative braking. These additions should allow the Carrera / Carrera S to consume 12% less fuel in city driving.
While a 911 hybrid is expected, eventually, an Autocar source dashed rumors of an EV by saying "We are investigating pure electric drive systems, but no decisions have been made on their production future."

The most telling stat, I think is the 1/4 time and trap speed. 10.7 @ 128.9

911 turbo S = dream car.
Launch control, DSG, AWD = Land Rocket.
I wonder if they are comfortable enough to be a DD.

I guess the crux of the matter is that the weight of the Turbo because of AWD affects the handling and spryness to a degree so if handling is more of a preference than straightline speed, I would stick with a Carrera S. OTOH, the Turbo S supposedly handles like it's on rails. Too bad it only comes with PDK and no 6-speed.

Rumormill: Next-gen Porsche GT3 to ditch manual transmission, rear-engine layout and KERS?
Remember simpler times when transmissions came in two flavors? Choosing a manual or an automatic was a straightforward decision: enthusiasts took the manual, commuters took the automatic. The emergence of in-between options like sequential and dual-clutch gearboxes may make it easier if you're an enthusiast who also has to commute, but what does it mean when these robotized transmissions shift faster and smoother than any set of human limbs could ever hope to?
That debate will rage for years to come, but when it comes to one of the world's purest driving machines, we could have our answer right here. According to reports circulating the interwebs, the next-generation Porsche 911 GT3 could lose the choice of a manual altogether, replaced by the PDK dual-clutch transmission. (Of course the stick could, mind you, come back for the yet more hardcore GT3 RS should enthusiasts object.)
That one bit will be enough to have purists up in arms, but that's not the end of it. An enthusiast on the Rennlist forum citing high-up Porsche sources also claims the GT3 will pack a 4.0-liter flat-six with some 480 horsepower on tap and nearly 200 fewer pounds to schlepp around. Purists may also take exception to the point that the engine is slated to move forward from its trademark position behind the rear axle to a more optimal mid-engine layout.
Finally, notions of a streetable implementation of the Williams-developed regenerative braking system from the GT3 R Hybrid is apparently off the table as well – at least for the GT3, anyway. Guess a hybrid, robotic-clutched, mid-engined GT3 would be one step too far, even for the people who came up with the Porsche Cayenne.

New renderings look good. But, IMO not a significant improvement from the 997. 997 over the 996 was a HUGE improvement aesthetically IMO.

That being said, after driving a 997.2S Cab with PDK, I was impressed by the transmission, aggressive Sports Plus mode, and rev-matching on down shifts.

Wouldn't they have to call it something else since it will possibly be mid engine, or is this just the direction of the 911?
Would it still have back seats if moved to mid engine? Don't we already have a cayman?

It would be borderline sacrilege to have a 911 that isn't RR.

well, hopefully they keep some sort of back seats so me neice has a place to sit. But since that decision is 5 years off, 2013 will be too new of a car when i buy my next one.
Something w/o an ims bearing that will cost me 15-20k if it goes.

Video from Sweden. Looks decent, I don't know what's up with those rear air-ducts like the Turbo. One can also catch a glimpse of the new Boxter rear.
At least the exhaust note of the new flat-6 sounds as good as ever.

Even if it would make it handle better? It's not like the rear seats are useable in the 911 anyway. Is resisting the change to something that may be better being a purist or being stubborn?

FWIW, I've used the rear seats on more occasions than I expected.

RR makes 911s very controllable in the rain/adverse weather, I've heard
It's just something different too.
