Porsche unveils 911 Carrera GTS

Carrera GTS: Porsche 911 Now Even Sportier

Stuttgart. With a power output of 408 hp, outstanding vehicle dynamics and a specification that emphasises the character of the iconic sports coupe, the new 911 Carrera GTS ascends to the pinnacle of the Carrera model series.

Powered by a 3.8-litre direct injection flat six engine that has been tuned to produce an additional 23 hp more than the 911 Carrera S, the new GTS combines the traditional 911 virtues of exceptional sporting performance, distinctive styling and day to day versatility.

Special attention was paid to the cylinder charge in the 3.8-litre flat engine fitted to the Carrera GTS in order to deliver 408 hp. A special resonance intake manifold features six vacuum-controlled tuning flaps that switch between power- and torque-optimised geometry, whereas in a Carrera S power unit there is only one tuning flap. Consequently, the maximum torque of 420 Nm is available at 4,200 rpm, 200 rpm earlier than with the Carrera S for increased low rev response. Added to this is a sports exhaust system with two dual tailpipes producing a unique sound. The outer shells of the exhaust pipes are painted in black and their inner tubes are polished on the outside and nano-coated.

As standard, the Carrera GTS has a six-speed manual gearbox and the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) is available as an option. In comparison with the Carrera S, top speed of the GTS with manual transmission rises by 2mph to 190 mph. In general, acceleration from zero to 62mph improves by 0.1 seconds; for a GTS Coupé with PDK and a Sport Chrono Package Plus in Sport Plus mode the benchmark sprint takes just 4.2 seconds.

True to the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy, this additional sportiness goes hand in hand with more rational appeal: the new 911 Carrera GTS consumes no more fuel than the Carrera S in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Fuel consumption of a Carrera GTS with PDK in the NEDC is 27.7 mpg (10.2 litres/100 km) and CO2 emissions are 240 g/km.

Unique within the 911 Carrera family, the GTS combines the 44 millimetre wider body of the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 models – including widened rear track – with a classic rear-wheel drive configuration.

There are many more details which underline the design and technology of the GTS from other Carrera models. For instance, the GTS sits on 19-inch centre-locking RS Spyder alloy wheels, painted in black with high-gloss finished rims, with 235/35 ZR 19 tyres on the front axle and 305/30 ZR 19 tyres on the rear. Further features include the SportDesign front apron with spoiler edge painted in black, special side skirts also in black, and the Carrera GTS logotype on doors and rear lid, in black or silver depending on the body colour. The area between the two tailpipes on the rear apron is also finished in black.

In combination with the standard black interior colour, the centre sections of the driver and passenger sport seats are covered with black Alcantara. The sporty interior ambience is further emphasised by use of Alcantara wherever driver and passenger come into direct contact with the vehicle; such as on the rim of the new three-spoke SportDesign steering wheel and on the gear lever and handbrake.

The new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS will have its global debut at the Paris Salon on October 2 and goes on sale in the UK in December, priced from £76,758 for the Coupe and £83,493 for the Cabriolet.

Fitted to every 911 Carrera GTS is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

I don't know what it is, but the interior of the 911 speaks to me so much. I really like the simple yet functional design, with the tach front and center. I see they put suede in the GTS, like the GT3? I like.

I thought the Carrera S was widebody and RWD? Maybe I had it confused with the 4S. Either way I like it too

Negatory. Widebodied 911s are predominantly AWD, i.e. C4, C4S, Turbo, Targa. Added weight of AWD was always a disincentive for purists who did not live in climates requiring AWD.

Here's the 1001st iteration. Looks like Porsche is once again raiding the parts bin of the 997 before launching the 991. The interior is

Revealed: new 911 Speedster
Porsche has plundered the historic back catalogue again to create another limited edition 911. It's not cheap...

Last week the 911 GTS, this week the 911 Speedster. Anyone would think Porsche was having difficulty flogging 911s at the moment, so is coming up with ever more inventive ways of shifting metal.

Just 356 examples of the Speedster are being made available worldwide – as if you needed another clue to point you to the fact this car aims to recreate the spirit of the original 1953 356 Speedster.

Porsche is heavily into plundering the back catalogue at the moment: this year we’ve already had the Boxster Spyder reliving the 550 Spyder and the 911 Sport Classic doing a ducktail impersonation of a 1973 Carrera RS (on video here).

The 911 Speedster uses the same 408bhp engine as the Sport Classic – and come to think of it, the 911 GTS. It’s also rear-wheel drive, has the PDK gearbox as standard and uses the 44mm wider Carrera 4 body.

In Porsche’s own words it’s been ‘designed and conceived by the Porsche Exclusive department in Stuttgart’, to help celebrate that arms 25th anniversary next year. Before you go thinking this is a good thing, Porsche Exclusive does all the personalisation stuff, not the RS stuff.

Two seat only, it has a 60mm lower windscreen and the iconic double bubble humps at the back. Unique Pure Blue paint is standard, but you can have yours Carrera White for no extra charge.

Like the £137,900 Sport Classic, the Speedster will wear an equally hefty price tag when it goes on sale next January at a cost of £144,100.

Press release for the Speedster...

Very low-slung, very sporty, and very rare: The Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, launches a small edition of a new 911 Speedster. Paying homage to the first Porsche model that bore the name Speedster – the 356 Speedster –, the production run for the new model is limited to 356 cars. The two-seater is significantly different from the other members of the 911 family. In the best tradition, the 60 millimetre lower, more raked windscreen, the flat contour of the sporty-look manual hood, and the characteristic double-bubble hardcover for the soft top define the striking profile of the new 911 Speedster. This makes the body of this rear-wheel drive with its 44 millimetre wider rear stand out even more. The new Porsche 911 Speedster will celebrate its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in early October.

The new 911 Speedster combines the classic features of this type of Porsche sports car with further improved performance of the current 911 generation: The 3.8-litre flat six delivers 408 hp (300 kW), 23 hp more in comparison with the 911 Carrera S. With its average consumption of 10.3 litres/100 km (27.43 mpg imp) (NEDC), the new Speedster is no less efficient than the 911 Carrera S Cabriolet without Powerkit – an effect of Porsche Intelligent Performance. The seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) is in charge of transmitting power to the rear axle fitted with a standard differential lock. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) are standard, too. Add to that exemplary protection for driver and passengers in the new 911 Speedster. Especially for this model, the Porsche engineers further improved the rollover protection system which is standard in all open-top Porsche cars.

The conception of the current Speedster comes from Porsche Exclusive – the company-owned "enhancer" specialising in individualisation of Porsche cars and small series. The 911 Speedster heralds the 25th anniversary of Porsche Exclusive which will be celebrated in 2011, and once again, demonstrates the small-series competence of Porsche Exclusive after the big success of the 911 Sport Classic.

Living up to the Porsche Exclusive standard, the 911 Speedster features almost all optional equipment of the 911 series and its appeal also comes from its meticulously hand-finished interior in black smooth-finish leather with numerous exterior colour painted details exclusive to the Speedster. These include decorative designs with checkerboard patterns in the seat centre section of the adaptive sports seats reminiscent of a chequered flag, and the leather side bolsters in the exterior colour.

The sporty flavour is further enhanced by the exterior colour “Pure Blue” that has been developed exclusively for the Speedster, providing an intriguing contrast with the tinted front lights, black headlight rings, black windscreen surround and other black decorative designs. Upon request, the Speedster is available in Carrara White, at no extra cost. It also features a special front apron, specific sideskirts and a distinct rear apron.

In 1953, the Speedster series was launched with a puristic sports car based on the Porsche 356, which had two sports bucket seats, doors with slide-in plastic side windows, and a shortened, elegantly curved windscreen. In 1988, the Speedster based on the 911 Carrera celebrated its revival with an added feature. For the first time, the hood compartment lid had the characteristic double bubbles. In 1993/1994, the next evolutionary stage of the 911 Carrera was ushered in with yet another Speedster.

In Germany, the 911 Speedster including country-specific equipment and 19 % VAT is priced at Euro 201,682 and will be launched in December 2010.

Anyhoo, I heard a rumor the 991 is going to have a 7-speed manual. Seems odd although the PDK is 7-speed. I very rarely use 6th gear, on the highway at 60 mph in 5th gear my tach is at 3K RPM.

Ummm, don't you live on a small island in the middle of the Pacific? No wonder you don't need more than five gears!

But yah - 7 manual gears does seem like overkill - will withhold opinion until driving one though. Just glad Stuttgart is finally upgrading the interior of $75k+ cars - no matter how many iterations if the 997 I drive, the interiors are too damn spartan.

True. Only when I open her up on the H3 can I get up to 70 mph. I agree on the interiors, for the 6 figures I spent one would expect a little more than plastic, aluminum looking plastic, cupholders that look like they came from Taiwan, a stereo that sounds like Panasonic and not Bose, etc. But then I roll down the windows, open the sunroof, and put my foot on the accelerator and it's all good in Inglewood

I for one like that the changes from model to model are subtle. The classic 5 dial dashboard looks the same as a half century ago. It's a classic shape and style that never goes out of fashion.

I just hope the gap between the 997 and 991 is not as wide as the 430 and 458 or some people will jump off a bridge.
