...and please read what I wrote.....it's not just gas prices.....it's your lack of buying power that is going to be the kicker.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- American consumers saw prices rise on everything from rent to food to gas last month, as inflation pressures around the world creep higher.

The U.S. Consumer Price Index, a key measure of inflation, increased 1.5% over the past 12 months ending in December, up from 1.1% in November, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said.

On a monthly basis, CPI rose 0.5% in December, from 0.1% growth the previous month -- the largest monthly move since June 2009. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com had expected a 0.4% rise in December.

Most of that increase was due to gasoline prices, which surged 8.5% in December alone, as commodities rallied.

While the increase is a sign that the economy is picking up steam, higher prices can eat into the purchasing power of Americans at a time when unemployment is still high and wages are barely growing.

"It is disconcerting that inflation is starting to accelerate, and you have to wonder, with gas prices moving above $3 a gallon, whether the rate of inflation will continue to escalate," said Bernard Baumohl, chief global economist with The Economic Outlook Group.

Inflation....and maybe even worse: stagflation is knocking at the door.

Last year, year before when ever it was) Well when gas prices were well over 3 dollars a gallon, many places hitting 4-5 i dont consider that low, considering not long before that they were low mid 2s.

And i DID read what you wrote, i was commenting on ONE part of it. I didnt know i was required to respond to it all.

^^ Your not required to....but pegging your whole argument on just gas prices alone doesn't get down to the real issue.

Weak dollar, inflation, stagflation is the root of the problems.

how is that just a hyundai's problem then?

you're the one who put out the gas reasoning and now adding up to back up your statement.. but all those things you are adding are not just problem of hyundai and their V8 but more like industry and consumer in general

I wouldn't quote CNN.com on anything ... They're consistently two to three weeks late on most news ... Unless it's something breaking like the Giffords shooting.

Someone will mention something here in Car Talk in passing and then a couple of weeks later it shows up on CNN.com ... The website is terrible.

That said, I don't think anyone is really terrified of inflation or stagflation just yet.

And if that were in fact the case, now is a better time to buy the Genesis before we have to start printing these:

I'd buy a V8 if gas was $5 a gallon. Car guys are unreasonable...

Lest we forget, it doesn't matter if its a turbocharged or supercharged V8 or an N/A V8.... if it has 400+ HP its not exactly going to be a fuel miser. The Corvette is an exception to the norm, really.

My friend's Evo X, which is relatively highly tuned for a stock inline-4 got 18 mpg on average when it was stock. If you manipulate a turbo V6 to put out 375+ horsepower, well you get my point.

My only point is there are plenty of buyers like me that would gladly sacrifice the extra $20 or so per fillup to enjoy a 400+ hp beast of a car....

No politics here....just economics.

Small vehicles sales on the rise and expected to rise.

....again I love the idea of a V8....however I don't think it's such a bright idea sales wise.

its Hyundai problem. it does not have brand image for V8. so it can only sell by undercutting in price and fuel efficiency.
There is practically no chance against $90K avg price Audi A8. Those buyers will not care about $6 gas. Even BMW 7 is downsized to V6.

Sorry

You think the Fed deficit can be solved without inflation?!?!?

Come now, be serious.

Cutting spending + increased taxes + inflation is the only way out.

I love the V8

However I think it's ill-advised.

When/if they sit on the lots, I fear that this will cause Hyundai to go have a knee-jerk reaction and run in the Honda direction.

...and that would be very sad.

ahh very subtle changes. I kinda like the old front bumper better, with the smaller "smile" across it.

I really don't think it does.
I mean...I can certainly see the lines where you are getting that from...but I don't think it really looks like a 5 series or would be mistaken for one. IMO, even from that view, it looks like a bigger 'couch on wheels' sedan whereas the 5 seems to have a tighter sportier feel.

Hence why I got a gas-guzzling "SUV"...

The FX35 would've been more than sufficient, to be honest...who the hey needs nearly 400HP and a V8 for mostly city driving?
