While I agree the could use some new tech, the engine and tranny isn't really a problem with the new Civic. In fact, its the only strong point. Fuel economy is great and performance doesn't really suffer all that much. Its everything else that needs work.

This statement from CR is right on the money:

With all of the recent small sedan competition and a redesign that dropped the ball, now there are a lot better choices than a 2012 Civic.

I can think of 2, Corolla and Sentra. Everything else wins in my book.

I was speaking in terms of Honda in general...not just specifically the Civic.

^ Well, that's certainly different from the USDM version - though, I'm not sure I'd call it good looking.

That looks like a cross between the last Civic coupe, the Juke and the Volvo C30......all three of which are "challenged" in terms of style.

what do they think it's competing with it? an Outback? there is no need for all that rugged look, it's a Civic

Corolla is probably my #1 most hated car ever since 2000 with Camry being #2.

But let's compare, even the 2012 Corolla looks better than 2012 Civic inside out. This is the 1st time in my life i would prefer to look at a Corolla over a Civic.

As i was comparing the Corolla and Civic, i just realized how expensive civics are.

Corolla base - Starting $15900
Corolla LE - Starting $17600
Corolla S - Starting $17700, Auto $18600

Civic DX - Starting $15805
Civic LX - Starting $17855
Civic EX - Starting $20505 Auto $22005
Civic EXL - Starting $23455

Why is Civic EX so much more than Corolla S?

Accord LX Starting $21380, Auto $22180
Accord SE with leather Auto $23930

Why would anyone buy Civic EX and EXL when accord SE cost the same and 1 class higher??

That's because you missed some trims of the Civic....

Here is the full price list:
Civic DX MT- Starting $15805; AT: $16605
Civic LX MT - Starting $17855; AT: $18655
Civic EX AT - Starting $20505
Civic EXL AT - Starting $21995
Civic EX NAVI AT - $22005
Civic EXL NAVI AT - Starting $23455

The Corolla LE with 4AT is $18360. However, that is the base model. To get moonroof, 16" alloy wheels, AM/FM/CD/MP3 player, you will need to get the Premium package for about $2k. The total would be $20510. That is $5 more than a Civic EX. I don't see an option where you can get navigation system in the Corolla.

As for your second question, well, here is the problem. Some people are saying how the Civic sucks because it doesn't have enough features. They are saying that cars like the Ford Focus has things like MySync, nice interior, parking camera, heated seats, etc. However, with those features, there is a price. A well equipped Focus would cost well over $27k. For comparison, the Ford Fusion, which is a class higher, starts at below $20k. Does that mean no one will buy the $27k-$28k Focus?

It's all about giving more choices to consumers. Some people might not need a car as big as the Accord. But they still want features like leather seats, navigation system, etc.

If I were interested in a compact Toyota that comes loaded with leather seats, nice stereo system, and navigation system, but don't want a car as big as the camry, there would be no choice.

I still see more 2012 Civic's around than similar offerings from Hyundai, Ford, Kia etc.. Corolla is everywhere though..

also good luck finding a base Corolla for 15K. no dealer's going to have it. it's like Toyota makes one and then lists it on the price sheet to get people to come into the dealerships.

i know people like to have options, and sometimes i do admit that I'd like more options for Honda. but overall, i prefer Honda's bundling of accessories/options into model trims much better than Toyota's a la carte method.

I really want to see what the SI will look like lowered. Stock form, it has horrible amounts of wheel gap, reminds me of a CRV

New super clean Honda diesel 2.2l

Autocar

Honda will fight back against criticism that its diesels are not frugal and clean enough by releasing a 110g/km version of its trusty 2.2-litre oil-burner.

The cleaner engine is due to make its debut in next year’s new Honda Civic, which will be revealed at the Frankfurt show next month.

The new i-DTEC engine produces 148bhp — the same as the more polluting unit in the Accord and 10bhp more than the current Civic’s older 2.2 CDTi.

The new CO2 figure is 29g/km better than the old Civic’s. It has been achieved partly by adopting stop-start, but also as a result of detailed internal tweaks. Honda says 5g/km of the saving comes from the Idle Stop system and the rest through revised oil channels to cut friction and aerodynamic refinements to the body.

“To achieve a good CO2 figure, you need to optimise every aspect of the car,” says Honda engineer Katushi Watanabe. “But we haven’t compromised the performance character of the engine.”

The new engine will make the Civic more competitive with the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf, boasting similar emissions to their 1.6-litre diesels but more power than their 2.0-litre oil-burners.

^ Engine whoring at its best - a 2.2l is overkill in a Civic but that's all Honda has in its diesel parts bin so that's what they use. The idea still has not dawned for them to use these in the US.

So the Civic Si has 201HP. Not bad in my opinion. Corolla, Elantra, Focus, Cruze and most any normally aspirated competitor doesn't match this.

Explain how the Civic Si is at the BOTTOM in your opinion?

No, its not bad. Until you look at the fact that a Honda 'sporty' car has been hovering at ~200HP for well over 10 years now.

And those competitors you mentioned don't have an Si fighter at the moment so its not exactly a fair comparison. The competitors the Civic Si does have are all far better performers with more power and Tq. As will the upcoming Focus RS.

Honda literally stood still with the new Si. I don't see any progress whatsoever from one gen to the next. Not sure how anyone can be impressed by that.

I never said it was at the bottom. I was simply rebutting your post that no one matches the Si.

IMO, its closer to the bottom to than it the top. At least as far as the interior and styling (sedan) go.
