Longitudinal mounted Twin Turbo V6. Sounds promising.
After months of speculation, Acura finally confirms that the new NSX will be turbocharged.
The 2015 NSX will also have three electric motors and a dual-clutch transmission with "more than six gears."
Unlike the first-generation NSX, the new Acura's engine will be mounted longitudinally.
TOKYO — Confirming months of speculation, Honda officially unveiled the 2015 Acura NSX's V6, armed with a pair of turbochargers.
Acura wouldn't confirm any details or specs on the car other than that the engine will be unique to the NSX and not simply an Accord motor in a pretty package. Just from looking, however, we can tell this V6 is just under 90 degrees and features dry-sump lubrication and direct injection. Assuming a displacement of 3.7 liters, combined with the car's three electric motors, 550 horsepower sounds reasonable, if not conservative.
But the big news here is how the engine is positioned within the car. Unlike the original NSX, the new production model will have its engine mounted longitudinally and not transversely.
Hideki Wakamatsu, Honda's operating officer and chief officer of technology development for drivetrain and e-drive told Edmunds that the change from a transverse layout to the longitudinal one happened recently after extensive testing, but that the change would not delay the anticipated on-sale date of 2015.
Not only does this layout simplify packaging (look at how much material is behind the engine now), but Wakamatsu says that the car is dynamically improved with this configuration.
The Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C, two of the NSX's benchmark competitors, also use a longitudinal midengine layout.
Those of you who are familiar with NSX history will know that this isn't the first time an NSX has gone longitudinal, as the Super GT racing NSX also featured this layout.
Edmunds says: Switching a vehicle's drivetrain configuration during development is a massive undertaking, and proof perhaps that Honda is just as concerned as we are about the 2015 Acura NSX being as good as the original.

Turns out all the 'insider' info was accurate.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Twin-turbo V6 instead of the "hybrid V6".
Is the car still keeping the complex motorized AWD, or just a simple RWD supercar like it's target competitors ?

Surprised and excited to see Honda/Acura go for a longitudinal layout.
Not too surprised by the V6 turbo, since it corresponds well into the F1 marketing. Same as BMW did with their previous V10 in the M-motors.
Way to go Honda

Turbo invasion in Honda line-up! Besides the focus for hybrids, now the turbos are coming!
The future is very bright.

No, in 2005 both the M5/M6 and the Williams BMW F1 car all had V10's. Mario Theissen, BMW F1 Principle was annoyed with FIA's banning the V10 for 2006.

V10's had been in F1 since the late 80's, so partially for the reason BMW getting back into F1 M-Group developed a V10 production motor for the large M cars. Don't know when they started but I'd guess early 2000's, takes awhile to get a production motor design/developed and into production. FIA ruled that F1 3L V10's were required in 2000, only to change their minds in 2004/5(?) to have 2.4L V8's in 2006. Alot of F1 motor manufacturers were annoyed since they had made significant R&D and capital expenditures into the V10 config.

Definitely sounds more intriguing...
I feel like the price will land anywhere been $120-160k. Hard to gauge how they will price it. I think just under a V10 R8 (~$150k) will be the sweet spot.

Not entirely shocking due to the news that's been leaking out for a while, but good to have confirmation of the Twin Turbo 6. The fact they changed course on the layout because it wasn't meeting performance targets shows they're more serious about getting this car right than I thought. As well they didn't just take the 3.5L from the RLX and slap on some turbos, they made an entirely new engine.
I'm guessing the price is going to end up somewhere around $120-$130k.
Couple this with the other technology info dump they gave today (turbo engines and new transmissions) and Honda came out swinging at Tokyo. I'm extremely curious to see what this car is like when the press actually gets to drive it.
I also have to wonder if this engine will make it into other vehicles down the line too (RLX SH-AWD Type S?).

Good. Now that info is out there for the public. Now lets hope this turbo trend trickles down to the rest of their lineup.

Finally it appears honda may get "current" with their engines and be on par with the rest of the industry.
This is indeed interesting news...it's about time there are some sort of real "specs" on the NSX.
Even more interesting is if turbo charged engines will trickle down to the rest of the Honda line-up.
Now all that is needed is this twin-turbo six mated to a RWD honda coupe/sedan.

I guess part of the reason is that the J seems to be doing quite well and is performing better than many newer engines.

Oh, you can dream alright. But, here's the reality I fear is gonna happen (on par with the stunts Honda loves to pull): They have now revealed the engine build and got us all excited and just literally the split second before the car goes live, they will cancel its production and blame it on solar flares or ObamaCare...
Just watch. You'll see.![KeKe](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/keke.gif)

I mean there was the whole "tier one", and then not tier one talk.
V8 and V10 talk, and then no V8 or V10.
So yea, I'll agree Honda has a history of "course change".

"What's more, as Edmunds reported, the configuration in the NSX isn't going to be shared with any other Honda product."

I am glad that NSX will be Turbo V6, that is if they don't change it again.
But i just wanna laugh at Honda for ALL these years and money they spent developing and advertising their hybrid supercar then change it in the last minute... AGAIN.
