Report: Honda confirms NSX development has restarted

Heads up, Hondaphiles – it looks like the NSX has been dug out of storage and plopped back on the table as a candidate for production. Company president Takashi Ito has announced that he's jump-starting development on the supercar. As you may recall, the beast was unceremoniously put to bed after the global economy gutted itself back in 2008. At the time, the project sailed under the HSV-010 moniker, and Honda even went so far as to campaign a version of the machine in the Japanese Super GT series.

Since then, the supercar segment has all but exploded with new metal. Mercedes-Benz jumped into the action with its SLS AMG, Lexus came to the party with the high-tech LFA and old-timers like the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and Nissan GT-R have been enjoying their own slice of supercar territory. We're all for the notion of a resurrected Honda fighter, but we're still going to treat this one with a healthy dose of skepticism.

We've been burnt before.

That's true.

But even if it is coming. I wouldn't expect anything other than a hybrid. Good for some, but don't get your hopes up for a 600HP V10.

Im just afraid it will be as lame a "sports" car as the CRZ is touting it as a great gas mileage sports car.

I think there's more truth to this than you think. Acura has been on anything but a roll lately and this is a way to stay relevant in the news and to enthusiasts.

Honda will not produce the NSX unless it can turn a profit and I just don't see that happening anytime soon...not in today's automotive climate...

SHANGHAI -- Honda Motor Co. President Takanobu Ito says his company is developing a sports car that will be the spiritual successor to the discontinued Acura NSX.

But in tune with the times, the new car won't feature the brute V-10 engine that had been envisioned for the next NSX. That vision was scrapped in 2008 during the global financial crisis.

Speaking to reporters at the Shanghai auto show, Ito said the car would be exhilarating to drive but also environmentally friendly: "That's the kind of sports car we want to make."

Ito did not give details of the sports car or a timeline for its launch. The vehicle is expected to use an electric drivetrain to give the gasoline engine a boost, a Honda spokesman said. The car will be positioned as a high-performance counterpart to the two-seat Honda CR-Z sporty hybrid.

"We are working very hard on it," Ito said.

Ito's predecessor Takeo Fukui killed plans for an NSX replacement as one of several cost-saving cutbacks.

That version of the NSX was expected to have a front-mounted V-10 engine turning out at least 500 hp. It would have followed the first-generation NSX, which had a mid-mounted V-6. That NSX went out of production in late 2005 after 14 years.

This is not the "NSX" you are looking for.

god damnit. I was really wishing that the new, PROPER, naturally aspirated mid engined NSX would be out by the time I was done with school but i guess not

If Honda could bring out an affordable 911 fighter...

i mean, when it first hit the market, it wouldnt have been crazy to cross shop the two. Today i realize that id be dreaming if i realistically expected Honda to bring a decent high end sports car into the market

Oh well, maybe lamborghini will come out with a 3 series competitor in the meantime

Rear engine air-cooled flat six Versus mid engine liquid cooled V6.....a bit apples and oranges.

even odder siblings are cross shopped today. engine layout and cooling doesnt mean they didnt have similar features and performance

and correct me if im wrong, but the nsx debuted in 91, and it wasnt till a few years down the road that porsche switched to liquid cooling for the 911

What I'm getting at is they are two different birds entirely.

The more astute buyer would know the difference, and might not really cross shop them as the Porsche buyer wants the rear mounted flat six, and the mid-engine buyer would look at the NSX.

Sure they are sports cars...but of a different feather all together.

...and no....Honda will never produce a rear engine sports car.

considering the emphasis you are placing on the rear vs. mid layout, what, in your opinion, would the 911 have been cross-shopped against in the early 90s? or even today for that matter.

I think Porsche lovers know what they want. They want the 911.
They love the heritage, the look, the engine, the platform, and everything about it.

It's distinctive.

Serious Porsche buyers are not really going to cross-shop the 911....for it is what it is.

911 has no direct competition, it is in a class all by itself. Not saying there aren't better cars out there but this isn't like a Camry vs Accord comparison.

FWIW Moog, one of my old Acura customers had a 2004 comptech NSX (not that comptech made an NSX, but he had every comptech product on this car). He ended up replacing it with a GT-2 because he noticed those "Porsche guys do very well on the track".

Dear Honda Bean Counters:

Please wake the eff up and bring back the HSC.
Lightweight, screamin' redline and mid-engine.
And NO old school GM circa 1995 halogen DRL's.
Advance, ADVANCE! C'mon, we know you can do it.

XOXO
