Is everyone ready for the Type S Concept? (Reveal Pics Page 5)

Yeah, saw the release. I'm sorry but the car is 7 years old and pretty much the same crap. Not even in the same league as the new TLX now. Wow, never thought Acura would leave Lexus behind. If you ever peak at Lexus forums they think IS is on par with 3 series. Not even close now.

I am ready for more pics of the TLX. I hope it doesn't take forever for reviewers to test drive the car and give us their reviews on it. The new Lexus 300/350 did nothing for me. So one less car to compare the TLX with lol.

Same platform and engines, I assume that means they're carrying over the 6-speed transmission for the AWD IS350. This thing is DOA, competitive set read as 7-speed DSG/8-Speed (Audi A/S4, 8-Speed (BMW 330/340), 9-speed (C300/C43) and 10-speed (TLX). As a current owner, I'm being kind by saying it does not shift quickly either.

I was reading all of the comments on the premiere video and basically no one is impressed and the car that kept getting mentioned is the tlx type S. I think i saw atleast 10 people say something about the type S.

I have a lot of respect for Lexus and regardless of their current design, I must say their cars are solid and people just love the brand. They sell more than 300K units per year and we cannot take that from them.
BUT, WTF is this IS? The car is 6-7 year old and interior is the same except the huge screen. Okay, the outside looks better and less outdated. But C'mon Lexus! you can can do better than this. it looks like what Acura did to ILX![Smile](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
My take is the following:
The Japanese brands, Lexus, Acura and Infiniti saw a huge decline in their sedan sales in the last few years. The only two sedan that have decent sales are C Class and 3 Series. Even the A4 isn't doing any magic. So, Lexus kinda gave up and focused on their SUVs. Infiniti is out of this equation as they don't have any vision, leadership and no sales.
Acura played very smart here. They started cooking the new TLX and TLX Type S. Now they are one step ahead of Lexus and of course Infiniti. So, the sedan war will be among TLX, C class and 3 Series. i still believe the Germans will win the race but TLX will give them a hard time just like the RDX did.
Now bring the MDX and MDX Type S to give a little fear to Lexus RX

New 2021 Lexus IS is being premiered tonight at 7:00 ET:

Based on some leaked pics of the interior, new TLX seems like it's in a better spot.

If the price is right, Acura may win. Lexus shot themselves in the foot, it's the same freakin car. Why would people pay top dollar for something similar that brings nothing to the game. Just buy it used at this point. At least do something inside if leaving the engines as is. When I saw the leaked image, I was sure it was the current model and thought it can't be real.

It would be interesting to read a comparo between the 2021 TLX SH-AWD (base) vs. the 2021 Lexus IS 350 F-Sport AWD or the 350 RWD with LSD on the track. ![Smile](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I do look up to Toyota and Honda seeing how they've lived up to their reputation for reliability / lower total cost of ownership (versus industry), at least from the non-sport sedans I have now and in the past.

The Base TLX should be able to destroy the IS350. The 350 is supposed to do 0-60 in 6 seconds. LOL I'd imagine the Base TLX with 300 HP will do around 5.1 seconds much like the Q50 Non Red Sport. Lexus are fools for this.

From Sentra, replace Nissan logo for Audi/Mercedes and it looks like a entry luxury model. See Lexus, not hard ... copy paste = bad.

I love the LS and LC, and this IS looks just as good relative to It's position in the lineup, but the interior and engines being carried over is a deal breaker. I guess this is just a stopgap redesign till the next generation, but I imagine that isn't for another four to five years. For someone who prefers a compact sports sedan over a midsized, this is disappointing. Type S still at the top of the list for now.

I think it's more likely they'll take sales away from Lexus, not the Germans. Like it or not, the Acura brand cachet is just not comparable to Mercedes, BMW, or Audi. At least with Lexus, their buyers are more aligned with Acuras in the sense that they value long term ownership and value.

There are four lights!
With the TLX getting larger, I think Acura is going to position the next ILX/whatever they're going to call it to be more in-line with the German compacts, at least size-wise. Current ILX is 182" so I'm going to guess around 187" give or take for the next one.

Some lines might cross price points but so far I don't think Acura & German SUV's compete against each other any more than the Chevy, FORD & GMC SUV's compete against the Germans. As for giving the Germans a hard time in the SUV arena BMW alone sold 2 SUV's for every one that Acura sold. In fact BMW sold more SUV's then the entire Acura production line sold. Then throw MB & Audi's SUV's into the mix & its not even close. Think Tesla has their attention much more than Acura does.
Last year RDX, X3 and Q5 sold around 60K units. GLC was the only suv in this segment that sold over 70K units. RDX wasn't too far from these Germans and definitely took their sales.
Now imagine, if Acura does the same with the TLX and MDX, it will give the C class and 3 series a little hit. Although MDX is already selling very well considering it's 7 year old model.

I completely agree if we take the brand as a whole. But I was referring to the RDX. I think Acura is so behind that we have to take one step at a time.

I understand what you are saying but think its not a complete analysis. When you look at Acura you have 2 SUV's. They are priced $38K to $48K & $45 to $59. Base to Max MSRP, You effectively have no overlap which might cause any real numbers of buyers to move up a line or down a line.
In the BMW SUV line there are 7 normal SUV's + 4 M series SUV's. Priced from $35K to $117K. In BMW's case all these prices are a MSRP for the base unit. Most will go to another 30% to 40% as options are added. In the X M6 you could be looking at $138K from a base of $108 without blinking once you option it up. That spread is almost enough to buy a base RDX.
So its very hard to say X3 vs RDX or MDX vs X5. There is just too much ability for a X3 buyer to go anyplace from X2 to X5 due to price overlap by option or core vs M lineup selections.

Having now watched the video, I'm a big fan of Jon Ikeda. He sounds like a car guy who could be in the forums like most of us. He's clearly very passionate about Acura and even said he likes the idea of bringing a wagon back in the future.
I'm rooting for him to get Acura back to where we all want it.

I'm actually getting a bit excited and look forward to trying it out in person. I'll probably not get the Type S as I buy the Accord/TLX as a second car in our household; so, I maintain a tighter budget than with my MDX purchases. But seeing the great performance of the Accord 2.0T, it seems I wont be left wanting going from a 19 TLX 3.5 PAWS to the TLX 2.0T. EDIT: Why does Jon Ikeda always sound like Christopher Walken? #MoreCowbell

That "new" IS is a joke, DOA for sure. The new TLX will do very well IMO. I wanted one until I saw confirmation there will be no manual, but I still hope it sells well. If it does, maybe it allows them to open the range down the road, offer a real trans and/or a long roof option. A TLX Type S 6spd wagon, my lord I need to go change my pants, BRB...

Add me to the list. I solemnly promise that if Acura comes out with a TLX Type-S wagon with at least 365HP and keeps it under $70K, I will buy one even if I have no need for another car.

I wonder how many thousands when he says a little.

I am excited by the 2.0 ASpec, inside and out. That Superman combo with that beautiful blue and the Red Leather with black alcantara inserts might just get to me give up my pearl white 2018 ASpec.... Maybe bext spring. It is good to hear Acura is moving forward, and I am impressed every time I hear Jon Ikeda (and he does sound like Christopher Walken). However, I would also like to see them provide some hybrid or fully electric versions.
BTW, that steering wheel looks meaty and very sporty. However, not sure about Jon's hand positioning

As much hype as the base TLX is getting, I wonder how enthusiasts are going to react to it once they finally get a chance to drive it. It may be a quantum leap over the outgoing TLX in terms of driving dynamics, but at the end of the day it's still the same 2.0T that we've seen in the RDX and Accord, and unless they're underrating it in this application, I can't see it being appreciably faster than the outgoing V6 model on normal roads. Most enthusiasts I know who bought a 3-series opted to go for something like a lightly-optioned M340i rather than a loaded 330i M Sport; I wonder if we'll see the same kind of preference when it comes to Type-S vs 2.0T A-Spec. True that Type-S might be considered overkill on paper, but I do wonder if people will find the 2.0T underwhelming because of how hyped up it has become.
Side note: I've gotten a lot of seat time with this engine in the RDX, and while it does feel better than the 2.0T in the base X3, it can't hold a candle to the 3.0T in the X3 M40i. If the Type-S is supposed to compete with the M40i cars, I'd expect the difference to be just as stark. Maybe for folks dead set on buying the 2.0T, don't test drive the Type-S
. I'd definitely have a hard time going back to the regular X3 30i after having a taste of the M40i version; I suspect I'd feel the same way about the 2.0T and Type-S.
Side note #2: Seeings as how the M340i is about $15K more than a base 330i, if the base TLX does start in the mid-30s, I don't think the Type-S will be priced beyond $50K. I'm revising my guess to $49,995 before destination

I'm guessing a) corona distancing and b) they don't want press yet driving the TLX. Maybe the power/handling are still being tweaked but you'd think the car would be in full production by now where it's too late to change.
I would insta-buy a wagon, but I don't think we'll see it before a mid-cycle refresh after 2-3 years if it happens at all. I don't want a effing crossover...it's not the same.

I'm not going to hold my breath, though. It'd be costly for them to offer a new body style for a car that (globally speaking) isn't going to light the world on fire with sales numbers. One of the reasons we even got the TSX Sportwagon in the first place was because the Euro Accord Touring existed and could be rebadged. Since the new TLX is now distinct from the Accord (which doesn't even have a wagon variant these days anyways), I can't imagine they'd have the resources to do something like this. Heck, they don't even have the resources to bring over a small crossover to compete against the likes of X1/GLA/GLB/Q3/XC40/UX, and that seems like a much better investment for the company than a wagon TLX. I'd sooner expect a coupe than a wagon, since that would probably sell better.
