ATF fluid level nightmare
ATF fluid level nightmare
Just wondering if someone could tell me what the correct transmission fluid level is when the engine is COLD.
The reason I ask for cold level and not hot is because I've been having a terrible time reading the dipstick when the fluid is hot.
As soon as I pull the stick out the dipstick tub is now contaminated with fluid and now alters the reading on the dipstick.
The stick also shows one thing on one side and a higher level on the other (when hot). Because the dipstick tube is bent is makes it almost impossible to get a simple proper accurate read.
Current readings:
Cold I show right in between the middle of the proper hot level.
Hot a show just a hair under the first line of the hot range on one side of the dipstick and over full passed the upper hot limit on the other side.
Such a simple job is causing me major headaches... Cold reading eliminates all this.
Any help would be appreciated.
Vehicle is a 2012 TL with 6 speed Auto.
Thanks

I have a similar issue. CAN'T READ DIPSTIC WHEN HOT. Service manual does state 3.3 quarts for a drain /refill. I changed my fluid last week. I'll read my dipstick when cold and perhaps take a picture
Strosek: I'll get you the cold reading soon. Every time I remember to check the the level its already hot. Being from Canada your cold reading might be a little different from my "Louisiana Swamp" cold reading.

(Standards and Service Limits Section)
Fluid change - 3.1L (3.3 quarts) for with or without SH-AWD

Hi KarKraze,
The fluid level seems to be ~ 2-3mm below the lower marker. It was a bit hard to see in the photos. Can you confirm? Thanks.

^^ I am assuming by what i am about to say here,i believe the two holes indicate the low and high points when the car is hot, these pics were taken after the car sat overnight and cold.
You are right,it is slightly below the the first hole from the bottom. However when the car is hot the level sits between the two holes.

Hi There,
I hope someone can give me advice on this. I agree checking the fluid level is not as easy as many other vehicles I've had.
So recently I did my 4th drain and fill and as usual I measure what comes out and put the same amount back in. This time though 3.45 liters came out so I put the same amount back in.
Anyway, before I seemed happy with the level on the dipstick but now i find when i check it cold its over the hot line... and when its hot its right on the max hot line maybe a mm over.
Does this make sense? Do you think it is overfilled or just right? (Acura dealership did one of my drain and fills maybe they added a bit more then usual).

Wow thanks!
If that thread is accurate and it sounds like it is... then that is exactly what is the case with my car and I will no longer worry. I will continue to check in though incase anyone has different opinions.
I figure it is overfilled MAX by 100-300 ml. And from all the research ive been doing... it seems as thought the transmission will not even notice that amount extra.
Thanks again!

I believe the level cold should read higher then the hot reading...when I checked before i did the drain and fill it was above top hole...I drained just over 3.5 qts so I put the same amount back in...now it reads right in the middle between the holes when cold, and when hot it reads at the bottom hole...I think it's low, but the service manual says 3qts for a drain and fill on 2010 sh-awd....wtf over...
