Hey, I bought my 2012 TL SH-AWD about two weeks ago at 64k miles. Just today as I was driving an hour home for the spring break, my car began to make this whining sound about an hour drive in. It sounds like its coming from the front end of the car. The whining becomes louder once you go over 30 mph and continue while coasting. Coming to a complete stop, however, the high pitch whine would go away but there is a little whine that is noticeable. When I pulled up to a traffic light, you notice the whine bouncing off the next car with the windows down. There is a greater whine coming from the right side rather than the left. I got home and left the car off for maybe an hour or so before running out for errands. The whining stopped but after 30 minutes of driving, it had returned. It doesn't sound like the serpentine belt but I'd prefer to hear it from you guys.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's most likely the propeller shaft bearings:

The shaft that transfers power to the rear differential.

Are you still under warranty? If so, take it to the dealer and have them fix it. Mine whines a bit, but nowhere near as bad as what you describe.

What was the outcome of this? I am thinking it might have been a wheel bearing and not the propeller shaft. Let us know the outcome.

I’m also interested in the outcome...mine has a very similar issue. The symptoms are identical, though within the past few days the noise has started happening sooner.

I have a 2012 TL Elite and had the exact same whining noise.
It was indeed the propeller shaft.
Luckily i am still covered so it was replaced under warranty.
This was just last week.

No prop shaft for FWD.

As stated, no propeller shaft on FWD but if the sound is coming from the wheel area it could be a wheel bearing. I replaced a rear hub and bearing and it resolved the issue.
