Failing propeller shaft

Hey everyone,

I found a couple of threads on this, but I have a couple of additional questions. I think my car is in the early stages of the propeller shaft failure in my 2012 sh-awd. Sounds like a tea kettle after about 20 Mins of driving.

Now I'm not the most mechanically inclined but I'm wondering if there is an easy way to tell it's failing if I jack up the car and have a look under it and confirm it's that part? Without going to the dealer of course. Also is it possible to get an aftermarket bearing or simply the whole thing needs to be replaced?

Thanks!

Somewhere in the middle of the shaft there are two "hanging bearings". Low quality bearings close to the exhaust pipes... and the engineers, or accountants, messed it up. One of the two heats up and goes bad and make the noise you hear. Sadly you just can't change the bearing, but the entire shaft. Honda/Acura has upgraded the part with a better quality bearing (entire shaft part number 40100-TK5-A03) . If you can fight these bearings with some wd40 or any other lubricant (Careful! !!) the noise may go away for a bit, but yes the shaft has to change for the noise to go away for ever. No harm leaving it as is, but yes it is annoying. The process of changing it becomes somewhat complicated if the bolts that hold the exhaust in place (it has to be removed to get to the shaft) are rusted. Ask for new part, not refurbished. The core (the old shaft) is recycled and if you pay for a new, make sure you get some refund for the core old one you'll give back. If they tell you the price of the new one has the core deducted and the price is around $1k tell them they are full of shit. The core sells around 400 on a good day !!

PS. stupid hond accountants got the same bearing on the much more expensive RL carbon fibre shafts... thousands of these bearings have gone bad on Honda and Acura cars over the years.

If your car is making this sound, it is the propeller shaft. Take it to dealer and have them replace it under warranty, out of pocket the part alone is around $1k.
Take a look at a video I posted about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FRH...ature=youtu.be

So, if the bearings are failing due to heat from the exhaust......could we wrap the exhaust with heat wrap in this area to facilitate longevity of the propshaft?

Strangely I noticed the same thing last week on my 2010, also once it warms up. So I bought a used one that is coming off of a 2013 with 40k miles. Can I be confident that it will be the re-designed part number A03 and the problem won't persist? I'd like to know if anyone with a 2013 or newer has experienced this and if anyone who had the new design installed has seen any recurrence of this issue?

The price at local dealers is outrageous and there was no mention of a core.

I'll see about having this used unit installed (not refurbished) but I have not read of this on the forums for this generation or for the RL so I'm wondering what some of the concerns might be. The service manual calls for runout inspection of not more than 1.5mm at certain points. Also the alignment must be correct to the rear diff and the orientation may need to be changed as well if vibration is experienced. To put in perspective, I could have about 3 or 4 used ones installed for the price of one new one. I doubt this dealer is willing to honor a price found from our site sponsors either.

Ha $1565 CAD from the dealer for a new prop shaft, no mention of the core, I'll bring that up next time I'm there see if they can factor that in

What ever you learn from replacing your propeller shaft, please post up. I really want to know what the difference is, between the two parts. I have a 2014, so it would be nice to know if the updated part is less prone to failure. I wonder if there's a way to engineer a shield, blocking/mitigating the heat from the exhaust system, preventing the premature failure of this part?

Sorry about the failure of your prop-shaft. 1,565 CAD is a lot of money, and I think that Honda should have done a better job preventing engineering it, so that it wouldn't have failed.

Failing TC's, prop-shafts, and oil-burning, I wouldn't have thought this a reality for Honda.

Again, any information you learn, would be great to read about.

Anyway, I hope everything goes well for you!

It is possible, but the idea is to make a better bearing, which the new part has (the updated one that ends with 03)

I wonder if anyone has tried taking shaft out of car and replacing the bearing in the shaft.

I'll have one on hand after switching with the 2013 used one so I may investigate this. I saw where someone posted pics of the bearing alone but not sure how it attaches to the shaft or the rubber mounts.

Do we know for a fact that the new (03) part is a fix? Has anyone has issues with the updated part?

I hope someone can confirm. I have not read in the threads where someone with a A03 has required another replacement but only time will tell unless there is an insider that knows this redesign specifically addresses this problem. Further I was merely guessing that the 2013's come with this A03 version. I really don't know but I have not heard of any 2013's reported with the problem which may again be due to too low mileage. Fingers crossed and hoping other chime in.

Approximately 100k km later and no issues. The fact that Honda changed the part number 40100-TK5-A03 is an indication that they acknowledged the issue and updated the part.

I just received my used replacement and I'm happy to confirm that it is the A03 p/n. Not sure if A03 was applied to all 2013's or it happened sometime mid model year and I got lucky. Will have it installed today and report back.

After install it seems okay. Was able to get it warmed up and did not hear the tea kettle whistle so if the design change is effective the problem should be resolved. Also there is "0" vibration from the used unit. I would recommend for those outside of warranty to contact a salvage yard and seek this part out with a later model year that has only front end damage. Before you or the yard pulls the part, they can check the sticker to see if it ends in A03. They can be found by me for as little as $165. There are a number of apps and search tools that look at salvage yard inventory across the US. With the shipping which can be avoided and dealer time of 1.6 hours I have less than $450 into it. Local pickup and install yourself could be under $200.

I hope this is helpful to some.
I will update once I put some mileage on and maybe also take a closer look at the old one.

I don't think this is possible. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they're sealed with no grease fitting.

I just bought my 2012 TL last week and heard the noise. I'm wondering if it is critical to fix or I can wait a couple months before I have the money to do it?

Depends on your tolerance for the noise and attracting attention from people walking along the street. I haven't heard of any actually failing and by that I mean seizing. It may impact rolling resistance and fuel economy but that's speculation.

My question is, how loud is this noise outside of the car? While driving I try to look at people walking to see if they're breaking their neck to see where the tea kettle is lol.

I had this issue come up on a 2012 TL that I recently purchased used - 54k miles. The service rep had me explain the issue/sound to one of their primary techs and his only question back was 'is your TL an AWD?' I said Yes, and he immediately identified the problem, submitted the warranty claim and I was back on the road in about 2 hrs. Great experience.

Hey, I am actually impressed about this HUD, it has gone thru a harsh winter and a hot summer sitting always at the dashboard and works like a champ every time I turn my car on. It has a light sensor and it adjusts automatically, I like it better at nights or when it is not very sunny.
I bought it from here

I'm in the GTA, since I purchased my car I've been taking it to Acura Pickering (formally Acura East)

Had some other work done there the other day and they confirmed my noise is the propeller shaft, guess I'll start saving my pennies and buy one lol

Noticed a whistle/whine at speed as I got off the highway yesterday; this thread gives me a good idea of what the problem is. Unfortunately, it's not a cheap problem to fix (though I understand labour should be limited). Dealer quoted $1,540 CDN for the part.

Ooh very cool, do you have a picture of what it looks like on your dash? I want a HUD but I'm kid of iffy because I don't want a big ugly looking box on my dash.

Did you say anything to get the discount? I'm going in to get mine checked and I'm willing to save a couple hundred bucks.

Ask them if they match online prices from other Acura dealers or if they can at least match their own Acura estore prices. You do not want to pay retail. I got good discounts doing this in my local Acura dealership, not a single penny off on the Honda ones.

Thanks good to know! Because I did see the part online for a little over $1K. What did they charge you for labor? My Acura shop charges $105 an hour

I got mine replaced for free under warranty, but it doesn't seem to hard to replace. Out of pocket this is the cheapest I found online new https://www.acurapartsforless.com/oe...9tYXRpYw%3D%3D

and used REAR DRIVE SHAFT FITS 09-14 TL 372512 eBay

Well my buddy has a auto body shop, got the part and discount through him

My dealer charges a whopping 135 an hour, lucky they only charged me 1 hour to install, so all in all not too bad

Maybe I should check the body shop I've built some rapport at. Because Auto Zone, Advanced and NAPA do not even carry the part for AWD TLs.

Mine started making the "tea kettle" whine in May, and it continued for the better part of the month, but it seems to have gone away now. That doesn't make sense, though, does it? Once a bearing fails, it fails; or am I missing something?

You are experiencing the typical Honda supplier bearing. When it goes bad it makes noises. When it completely collapses inside its housing it goes quiet. These hanging bearings are not too essential for the prop shaft since it is well supported anyways by a bunch of bolts at each end. However, too much vibration may have some effect stressing these bolts. So, that may not be good news.
