transmission saftey switch sound....

you know the saftey feature when you hit your brake to take out of park to reverse or drive....it makes a sound when you hit the brake, i can hear that sound sometimes when i take off from a stop light it almost sounds like a part is loose inside there somewhere....anyone

i have the same thing going on and the sound is coming from the shift gate...the service department have stated that its normal and i have it in writing but the noise doesnt bother me and if something happens further i have the proof against them... but i dont think its normal either no way ....

I think I might be experiencing this same thing too. Everytime I brake and then hit the accelerator I get a weird noise that most of the time sounds like it is coming from the center console area. I took it into the dealer and they said they couldn't find anything then they said it was something with the brakes.

thats exactly what i am hearing and when i am hearing it...its the same sound it makes when i am in park and press and release the brake...its the safety switch to keep from comming out of park without the brake on....i dont know if there is a fix or not, and i dont think i want to start digging around in there either without some help from someone on this board who has done it before...

Now that people on here have an idea what it is, I might take it back to the dealer and see if they can look at that switch.

Will do. I am going out of town next week so it'll probably be the week after before I can get it back to the dealer.

mine does the same. clicks every time you pass something like 2mph when driving or if you push or let off of the brakes when in park. my moms accord does the same, just not as loud.

i figured i'd just get used to the sound since i'd rather not have the dealer taking apart anything else to fix noises... they would probably just make more in the process (they tried 3 times to fix the rear shelf, just making it worse each time).

I took my TL back in this morning. I rode with a tech who did hear the issue. He couldn't immediately say what the noise could be and I mentioned this switch so hopefully they will look at it.

Finally got my car back from the dealership. They had a hell of a time figuring out what the noise was. They thought they had it fixed several times only to have it start doing it again. They replaced tons of parts and finally yesterday they took off the motor mounts and drove it around and it stopped doing it then they replaced the motor mounts with ones from another car and it wasn't doing it anymore so they put new ones on and it seems to be ok now.

As others have mentioned above, it is a component of the shift/brake lock mechanism. The fact a dealership can't figure this out only identifies that they aren't looking or their employees have absolutely no business being a tech. But most of us already realize that. :-(
My 04TL did this when new. Early on I took the shifter knob/silver plate etc off and went for a drive. Took me all of 2 minutes to find the source. Is it normal? Completely.

Their is a white cam/lever that basically rocks back and forth depending on the motion of the car. This lever "is" the lock mechanism that keeps you from pulling it out of park unless your foot is on the brake. With your foot on the brake a solenoid activates to trip the lever. That is the only time the lever is "secure" etc. Once you let off the brake the lever is free to rock back and forth - hence the sound you hear when driving etc..

I sprayed a little thickening grease on mine to "dampen" it's movement. Does not effect it's operation yet minimized the noise near completely.

Now, someone tell me why my trans or "?" is whining at 45K miles.... :-) But that, is for another thread.
