my version of the ultimate cooling mod
Ok, here is my version:
Here a few things to keep in mind.
Cost me $2.89 to do from a part in the gutter section of home depot. Inaccurate mentions many times that the heat mainly comes from the center of the cowl, so I decided to leave the area near the fresh air vent alone.
I also, did not cut out the area behind the vents since they mainly correspond with the oem ones in the cowl and I didn't feel the need. The hot air will be channeled thru the bottom cutouts.
Hope everyone digs it.
Here is the grill I purchased, you have some options but I needed one that had a lip that would hide the imperfect cuts. Thought about trying to search for smaller one that would be long and thin but figured that either might not exist or would be hard to find so I made due.
Cut it in half although it was too tall so I took off 2 rows on the driver side one (it's got less height) and 1 row on the passenger one...dremel wheel made 15 second work of that.
Originally I measured the center of the cowl but honestly, it didn't line up well with the oem ones and also made my grill fall on the center cut that separates the cowl. I ended up doing one grill on one side of it and one on the other, pretty close.
Marked with a china pencil
here's the cutout...
SCARY! Almost pussied out...but decided to go for it.
test fits
spray painted with high temp black, was brown
(had it anyway)
test fit painted
although seemed to hold itself in place, added small bead of high temp silicone adhesive to hold it there.
and here is the end result.
Not as aggressive as UCM, but I'm very happy with the end result. Looks good, pretty oemish and gets the job done.
and here's what you do or don't see!
And FYI, here in Sofla, yesterday after a normal commute with the UCM...I had 142 on the intake. So hey...it's hot down here. A few degrees cooler than the 148 last time but not worth the look, to me.
Anyway, hope this is helpful to some.

Thanks man...and to think, it started as a check out my rims page...then little by little I found it a good place to house little things I've done to my car. Fun to come in here here and there and check how far along the car has come!
There are a lot of little things I don't bother posting...like, coming in from the garage now from replacing the 9006 oem fog socket...the positive had totally corroded so my yellow DRL (module) would keep cutting out. It's always something...just glad that for the most part, I have been able to figure it out. (yeah, ok...thanks to AZ!!!).

^^^ yeah Ontario has a very little window with the snow...UCM is best when used in places where the temps go upwards of 90degs....if Ontario is 70-80 in the summer, I dont think you will see a difference with this....you will with the coolant bypass

Yeah, that actually does look great.
Nothing wrong with that. It really amazes me how one picture will look great to me one day and then a few months later, it will look overdone.
This picture, I keep coming back to...although it doesn't show the detail of the wheel and the car is sitting higher than it does now...I just love something about this picture.

already did...forgot to put it on my thread, it's on the Ultimate Cooling Mod thread.
So far so good...got to work this morning and was happy to feel how much heat was coming out of the vents. Honestly, maybe it's partially placebo but I really do feel like the car is driving how it does on a cool evening all the time now. I guess bringing the temp down by 15 degrees under hood, or more...really makes a huge difference. Much more than doing mods to keep things cool UNDER the hood.
Anyway...cut the last grill a LITTLE too short, but overall I think it looks great so no complaints. I might redo it with a new vent.

Oh yeah...go for it bud...easy to take out too...
remove rubber seal along top,
remove both wiper arms, pop up 4 little black fasteners up front and 2 green ones that you'll see under the cowl, then bring em on out.
PS...just my tip, put a piece of painters tape to mark where the wipers end up so you don't have to guess later. Also, mark your driver side wiper and bolt cover to avoid confusion later.

effin a right, buddy...BUT, let me tell you, do NOT be in a rush to put the thing back in. Put your wipers back on for now and take your time until you decide what you are going to do with it and also, go as extreme as you plan to. I have had to take it off 3 times now because I was in too much of a rush.
PS...I know what you mean...when I was younger I was so hellbent to get stuff done quick that I'd do a bad job and have to redo everything. Now, i pick and choose when I have a lot of time to mod stuff.

oh i know. i threw all the covers in the trunk and put the wipers back on right away. went for a drive, felt nicer and a lot smoother down low. happy about that. going to wait like a week to 'get used to it' and then install the tray once i've got it modified. i'm leaning towards the drilled/mesh method so far....but idk. i need to look into the firewall area for more things first before i decide anything.
whats up next for your car? just polishing things up? you have such a big list of things done already

Hmmm...well, I never really have any future mods "planned" per se...
just picked up a back up set of headlights for cheap (had bought and sold and bought em back from a friend).
just picked up a second set of engine covers that I may have painted for some contrast
We shall see.

Yeah, but I always think I don't have anything else to do and then I see something or create something in my head at the most random times. I always have my back up plan...
wash, polish and put another coat of z2 on the car.
