Carfax is bullshit, I saw a dozen cars with clean carfax reports that were in significant accidents and had a shoddy patch up.

are most of my accidents reported?

if fixed correctly, no one can even tell it was in a wreck. drives straight. 100% aligned. 100% body aligned.

Not the only thing you do...I mean, to buy a used car without an experienced mechanic's 2-cents is probably not very prudent either. But, it's all part of the purchasing process (i.e. Carfax) to do your homework.

Well now. I'm a boyscout. So, you run a Carfax on any of my cars, you will get the 100% DL.

No. Only if it was claimed by insurance. There are a large percentage of car owners who don't carry full-coverage on vehicles, end up selling what's left to a scrapper who either flips the car to auto auction or to dealers. Clean carfax.

I looked at an '08 E63.. low price, low miles. I saw runs in the fender paint. Misaligned gaps between headlights, hood and fenders. Gap between front and rear wheels didn't match each side. Clean car fax. Fuck that.

Yeah, dealerships and repair shops (mechanics/body shops, etc.) have to pay to be a member of the Carfax network so only those shops will report to Carfax. For example, my body shop doesn't report to Carfax so the work I've had done on my Accord didn't show up on the Carfax.

My 03 Accord 6MT was the best car I've ever owned (I was the second owner, had it from 39k miles to 215k miles). I'm hoping the TL-S 6MT is just like a much much much nicer version of it.

Okay then...makes the importance of knowing a good mechanic to inspect the vehicle even more important than.

99% of people wouldn't notice, I'd be willing to bet a mechanic wouldn't have caught all that, and that's just visual.

Make sure you don't tell that mechanic how much you're going to pay for it though.

it will be. and it sounds like you know what you're looking for.
treat it as a used car. misaligned body panels. roughness in paint, etc.
you'll be fine if you grab an unmolested one

Carfax shouldn't be your ONLY source, but it should be part of your arsenal!

My S2000...I noticed front fender/hood paint (even though bought at night) but it was explained by previous owner as he'd it repainted due to rock chips. I trusted his carfax that he gave me and didn't print the current one...turns out he claimed a hit and run to pay for the respray. No biggy, except now my carfax shows accident when there really wasn't one. I confirmed all vin numbers matched, front bumper/fenders/hood...all good.

I don't mind too much though, I set fair prices and believe in 100% disclosure. I'm an educated consumer and I like to sell to the same type of buyer. Here are the facts, the good the bad and the ugly...you don't like it, not the car for you, no hard feelings. Someone else will.

That is exactly what I had meant.

Part of the homework one needs to do when checking out a used car.

Now, if it was prior owned by Crabs here, you probably want the car swabbed by a biohazard team too.

It has a rebuilt title...find out why or find another car. He says it was all cosmetic, but that means the car was totaled with only cosmetic damage...nah...

if you know that it has a rebuilt title and you are comfortable with that, then purchase it.

MEANING; you could find something that you dont like later down the road and will have to either DIY or pay some one to fix it.

TO ME, I WOULD SCOOP IT UP IN A HEART BEAT at $13.5k!(i'm willing to bet he'll come down in price too)
I am capable of fixing things and can take it to a shop if the frame is not aligned.

BUTT, ASSUMING, everything is spot on, that is a hell of a deal at $13.5k.
again, you could potentially find something you dont like....down the road.
the risk you'll have to take.

this is giving him the benefit of the doubt.
he could be a liar and is just pawning off his problem to you.
another risk.

That's no fucking deal.. that's a fucking pig.

If it had a clean title, that would be a deal. You'll never get your money back on that car.

1) Don't buy a rebuilt / salvage title car unless you intend on owning it for the rest of your life.
2) Don't buy a rebuilt / salvage title car unless you get plenty of seat time in it and have it checked out by an experienced mechanic. I'm talking about magnet to the fenders and unibody. Wheel gap at corners, sub frame consistency and straightness. Clutch needs to be checked.. etc.
3) Don't buy a rebuilt / salvage title car for more than 50% book value ($7,500 max for scotty's TL).
4) Don't buy a rebuilt / salvage title car

Justin, that's 15K? I had the front bumper, both front fenders, and the hood on my Nissan Frontier pickup get ripped off in a collision...it was about $3500.
