I was thinking about this last night - BMW, for example, has the 330xi and 530xi. Both share the same engine and drivetrain, but that alone doesn't mean the 3-series incringes on the 5-series' sales. There are other, more fundamental, differences, such as a significant size difference and perhaps some extra luxury feel to the 5-series that meets certain buyers' needs.
Hopefully by 2009 when the TL is made-over, presumably with AWD, Acura will start figuring out how to better differentiate the RL without sacrificing the advancement of the TL.

When you really think of it cars like TL and ES by lexus are in their own class, they are maybe the same size as BMW5series or E class, A6 ect but they are made to be FWD cuz they go after the people that want a nice car with just plain old FWD. There are so many FWD cars on the market that don't have all the bells and whistels if you are someone that likes an Accord but, want something in the Lxry dept its nice they make a car like the TL or if your a Camry person its nice you can choose an ES. Cars like the RL, M, GS, E class, 5Series are in a class of their own. The German Car co's Are all about RWD or AWD, the Japs seem to like and mix it up, thats what makes everyone stand out in their own way, if everybody made a TL it wouldn't be much fun. Acura trys to stand out on opt's, they are the only ones who give AWD like it or not, someone might not want to pay the extra in gas cuz of AWD or they live in a place where its useless and not buy one. like for example I would never do an RL cuz the Nav is standard, I would hate having a nav screen in my face. its something I wouldn't use and don't need but I wouldn't mind having an RL otherwise.

I think that for Acura avoid problems for the RL could be to get a new COUPE' 3 doors on the base of the TL, the old CL for example, with 300+ hp, AWD and 3.5 engine.
The TL coupe would look GREAT...
Or create 2 engines for the TL: a standard 3.2 with 270+ hp, FWD, and a more $$ with 3.5 and AWD like the old TYPE-S...
Now it would be the right moment to give the TL a TOP VERSION, the appeal of the fantastic V8 of an RS4 Audi, for example, or a V6 as the old BMW M3 that could get 350 hp...
TL can get too much expensive with the BASE version at 34$ as now, and a top sporty version, sedan or coupe', supercharged...
Even the Lexus IS will get an IS500 with something about 400 hp...

Please educate me if I am way off but, why doesnt someone jsut jack up their car to see if there is an existing tunnel in the car that can accomidate a drive shaft? SH-AWD needs some kind of shaft right?

It can be done. I'm yet to see a member of Acurazine with the time, resources, or technical ability to review the parts and service manuals enough to get it done.
There's a shop out in Cali that does the 4motion conversion for VW's... conceptually the same. You want a 3.5 L and AWD... buy an RL.

It cost too much $ to put in the SH-AWD system in the current platform. Is likely to come out with a new platform or on the current modified RL platform. The '07 TL will not, I repeat "NOT" come with an AWD system. You can wish but don't get your hope's up. The TL will give its competition its run for its money in tech, style and comfort, but not in performance until they change their drive train.

Sorry. What I meant was for the people asking about the 2007 AWD, see if the 06 has a tunnel. If it does not, dont dream of the 07 having it because they will not redo the chassis just for another model year or 2.
