well ladies... the time has drawn near....

most of you know me... i have '00 FPR acura tl. i purchased her in 2006 with 115k miles and has been a champ ever since. now i've got 165k miles on it (i'm pretty sure it's original trans) and i think it's finally slipping. when i drive, i can feel her shake a bit (i know my front mount is shot) but i think the tranny is starting to give (just intuition i guess) so i've been searching car-part.com for some 03'cl-s engine/tranny quotes and i'll be awaiting the emails. lets see what we can accomplish. i hope the kris's will be readily available for pm's, and do we have any ziners in the louisville lexington area that have quite a bit of knowledge on the subject?

i'm actually finding a lot of these trannies out there, esp with low miles so whoever is saying they aren't finding any, they aren't looking very hard.

as far as what to buy, i figured obviously the engine and tranny used, but what parts should i get new? i'm assuming i might as well get a new aftermarket clutch, what about shifter cables, assembly? should those be new? thanks for looking

I would replace the front motor mount if broken- maybe its not trans yet (front mount may have a vac boost line to it and will make car run bad-shake from vac leak when mount broken)
or it will last till you have all the parts together

Smell the trans dipstick for burnt fluid

if it shakes hard on shifts into 2nd and 3rd....need I say more...
or did you want to start the azine clock on the trans failure? It helps if you tell us how great the trans is with xx miles- then a week later- kablaaaam

the quick visual trans replacement check- acura warranty units have the main case bolt heads painted blue- look under car at trans
or call acura 1-800-382-2238x5 register as owner and ask if trans was ever done
If the recall was never done to install the oil jet kit- you can still get FREE trans from acura if there is heat damage to certain parts- regardless of mileage

i appreciate the help very much! but since kris (fsttyms1) did his swap back in 07 i've wanted to do the same, i'm pretty much paying for this from my deployment cash and i'll have plenty left over. i'm going to buy all new motor mounts for when the type s and 6mt is dropped in

as far as used auto parts go i'm quoted for

2003
Engine
Acura CL(3.2L, 6 Cyl, VIN '4' 6th digit), Type-S32k$750

2003
Transmission
Acura CLType S 6-Speed - Tested Great
72k$1350

2003
Engine Computer
Acura CLTESTED GOOD,37820-PGE-A12$475

i may or may not need the ecu, i need to see what richiev6 says. (don't want to drive around in limp mode).

i need to find the cupholders and handbrake setup.

i know i'm going to get a new clutch, do i need a brand new clutch master cyl? or will used be just fine? shifter cables? new or used? shifter assembly? i'm going to get new shift knob and boot, just looks better might as well get a used clutch pedal. since this engine is coming from a cl-s6mt, i shouldn't have to worry about crazy $500 sensors. any more ideas?

a used clutch master is going to have bad inner oring seal from sitting

They dont cost that much, may as well replace the brake master while there and be good on hydraulics

yeah- IMO if you are going to bomb around with a fast car- having good brakes is pretty important

yes i understand that. i've still got a lot of life left with my rotora drilled/slotted rotors and ceramic pads, i'm thinking of going with the legend calipers after the swap.

just got off the phone with bryan at nationalautosalvage in IL. ordered the following parts...

2003 Acura CL-S Transmission 72k $1250
2003 Acura CL-S Engine 54K $950
2003 Acura CL-S ECU $475
2003 Acura CL-S Harness $150

all for a grand total of 3063.75 after taxes and shipping in used parts. not too bad considering i'm doing engine swap also.

i believe he said he has a few other transmissions... anyone feel brave? Bryan @ 217-615-7606.

since you already have really good rotor/pad combo - I suggest the SS brake lines when you do Legend calipers
Makes a huge differance when you eliminate the rubber hose flex under pressure of braking
Get rebuild kits for the rear calipers and you will have the stopping machine!!

good luck with the swap, man. Keep a detailed list of everything you do in the process...having a feeling my car is gonna need that swap soon as well.

Hit me up if you need any help-I work nights but will try to assist if possible.

thanks, and from what i understand, you don't live too far from me, my parents live in the springhurst area (where i'm staying till i start school). i should be getting this engine in any day now, but i plan on tuning up the engine a bit before i dump it in. so i'm not sure when the swap will occur since i start at EKU on jan 11th.

funny story, i was driving to harbor freight tools yesterday in clarksville IN and some older dude (looked to be 50s or so) in a NBP 99-01 TL with KY veteran plates, drives up to me and was like "man where did you get dem pipes?" (referring to my exhaust). never heard someone call it that

so i'm getting the engine, transmission, engine harness, and ecu, ALL FROM A CL TYPE -S 6MT. and i've read the 76 page "six speed obsession" page over . from what they are telling me i will not need a module to do this swap, it should be completely plug and play since i'm tricking the car into thinking it's a CL. anyone else using the ECU? Kris i think you are using it too, but you had to swap a bunch of sensors out, my engine was already manual so i shouldn't have to worry about that.

yes do all the maintence on the "new" engine before it goes in, much easier to do with it out vs in the car

i don't really like harbour frieght tools cause normally they what they sell are cheaper tools, but for personeal use they seem to be alright, just not when you have to use them every day, so

plug and play , it kinda is, but you have to do some wiring to get every thing to work on the car (for some reason i don't think the back windows will work till wired up after the swap) (with dash wiring i think too)
make sure you get the key with that ecu, or take it to the dealer (most independent shops can't cause it deals with security issues, and most manufactures don't let that go easily, which is understandable though) to get your keys programed into the new ecu
as said earlier, you are already starting with a manual engine, so no sensors should have to be swapped around

you can always get an apt with a enclosed garage, but might be kinda tight, with how small they like to make them

i'm waiting on my shifter kit (assembly, cables etc) i need a set of brake/clutch pedal assemblies, clutch master cyl, OEM clutch and technically i'll be ready to install.

but.... patience is a virtue, and i plan on changing timing belt/water pump, light weight crank pulley, check my spark plugs (engine has 54k on it i think what they said)

question about headers, will my stock exhaust manifold fit or do i have to go aftermarket? (instead of buying CL manifolds)
