Aftermarket key fobs

This is how my day started. Anyone have experience getting an aftermarket key fob cut and programmed? I suppose Acura would charge an arm and a leg. I do still have the second key, but a back up is good!

Still loving my 2008 RDX with only 76k miles, so this is not going to be an excuse to by a new one lol.

Doh!

All you need to do is get a new blank cut, and you can move all the key parts from the old fob to the new. This way you don't have to get the fob or the transponder re-programmed. Just be careful not to lose that transponder chip.

Thanks - looked so promising, but even with the right screwdriver, one of the 3 internal screws stripped out, while the other two came out cleanly :/

If I have to get a new switchblade/fob and the key milled, can I still switch in the old chip to avoid reprogramming? Thanks.

Yes, but you'll also want to make sure the transponder chip that was next to your key is also moved over. Without that you'll be able to lock and unlock your car, but it won't start.

Also, if you're careful enough you should be able to remove just the little PCB (tiny green board with contacts on one side and the battery on the other), and swap that into a new set of buttons, and in turn put that into the new fob with a freshly-milled key.

Same thing happened to me. I would not necessarily recommend this but, for the moment, everything works and car starts. When mine broke I used plastic glue to place the key in place and fill the gap around it at the top of the fob. Then I wrapped electrical tape around as tight as possible (I don’t care if it folds, I just want the key to work). I assume if you got glue elsewhere in the fob you would have problems. For the moment everything works but I’ll be investigating if I can transfer everything to a new case.
