programming new key fob

Hi, I was just wondering how hard it is to program a replacement key fob. The fobs that came with my used 2014 look like a dog chewed on both of them and I touched them up with vehicle touch up paint, but, they are ugly. I want to purchase oem fobs on line and program them. Is this worth doing over dealer replacing them?

Google 'programming 2014 rdx key fob' or some variation thereof.

No dealer will program a key which you bought online (for obvious theft prevention reasons). Those are worth only as a paperweight. If you want a new key, either go to the dealer, or buy a key case / shell online and place your original key / internals in it. It's a shame that Acura provided such a poor quality key. I surely will be the first in line if anyone could reprogram a 2016 key for my car.

thanks for posting that for me. I will consider this, but first I'll just try getting a new shell. 👍

I think it's more that they want to charge you a few hundred dollars to sell & program a new one. It's not the fob that gets programmed, it's the car's computer that gets programmed to recognize the fob. You have to have the car to do the programming so I cant see where there's a theft threat. It's not like you can bring in a fob and have it programmed to some VIN.

I lost a key to the TLX just before we were leaving on a long trip so we had no choice. Seems to me the dealer price was on the order of $235 to $240. They reprogrammed the only key plus the new one to the car. Naturally a few days later the original key was found but it's now a mini paperweight, quite unusable.

I saw that website as well and was wondering if my dealer in Canada works reprogram it.
Did you end up picking one up?

They quoted more $480 for a replacement fob. I have 2 driver 1 fobs that came from a 2104 acura rdx and I'm wondering if I can reprogram one of them to link to driver 2 settings. Anyone know if this is possible?

Hello All!

As the new owner of a 2013 RDX, I too was dismayed at the horrible condition of the remote key fobs. I found an inexpensive but very nice silicone cover which transforms the fobs from nasty to nice.

I recommend these:
Amazon Amazon

I am suprised I have not see this inexpensive but highly effective solution posted!

Drive friendly!

Does the car see them both as driver 1? Start it with each one and see which driver is says you are. They may be set up correctly, just labelled wrong.

Yes they both point to driver 1... Or at least I can confirm neither of them associate to driver 2. Anyone know if I can get the dealer to reprogram one of them to driver 2?

I did a Chat with replacemyremote.com.Asked what programming was necessary. They responded;that Acura remotes must be programmed by a locksmith or dealer that has equipment to reprogram the ECM.
You can buy the remote cheaper here https://www.acurapartsnow.com/oem-pa...QtYXV0b21hdGlj

Yes, it isn't the remote itself that's programmed to the car, it's the car's computer (ECM) that's programmed to the remote. Each remote has a unique code and the ECM in your car has to be programmed to recognize your codes. Usually, only a dealer has access to the ECM at that level, it's a pretty proprietary interface. I'm surprised that the dealer couldn't program it...perhaps the Driver 1/Driver 2 codes are hard-coded in the remote? Or perhaps the dealer just didn't know how?
