It's not a completely new operating system, no. Going from OS 9 to OS X is about as radical as going from DOS+Win3.1 to NT 4.0.

EDIT: What I mean to say is that the kernel was totally different between releases and a compatibility layer had to be added to support OS 9 apps. If anything, my analogy is too weak. At least Windows NT 4.0 could run most 3.1 apps.

All I'm saying is, comparing any OS 6+ years ago (when they all sucked) to an upcoming OS is like comparing the 1999 TL to the 2007 TL

But if you want to go Apples-to-Apples... no, Vista in comparison is technically not new. OSX was built brand new from the ground up... Vista is barely more than a new coat of paint... and how hard can painting be?

Microsoft has promised the “largest upgrade since Windows 95” in Windows Vista.
Seems like a pretty big leap to me. Also, saying OSX was an all new operating system makes me think you have no clue what you are talking about. It's very much based on Unix which has been around forever.

Darwin was also built from the group up, based on Unix.

Nevertheless, comparing Darwin as a base for OSX to Windows XP as a base for Vista is really no comparison at all.

My point was that new products have bugs. Unless you use truly modular code whenever you make any big update to an OS it often results in things that were previously working having problems. I still disagree that OSX was 'all new' 6 yrs ago. It's based on Unix; the way they used it is new but not a reinvention of the wheel at all.

My only point here is that any major update to an OS will result in bugs..lots of them. Apple won't be immune to this until they stop hiring humans to do their programming.

You don't even know what point you're trying to make do you?

The thing is, here...

In my first post... that's not even a bug. That's as designed. Microsoft's attempt "secure" Vista is akin to your mom making you layer 3 snow suits before going out to build a snowman.

No disputing that, but at least they're bugs... and not "security features"

They obviously didn't design it to act like that when you delete a shortcut; that's a bug resulting from their new Security architecture that is fixable. It won't stay like that. It's a bug that will be fixed. I'd put money on it.

The funny part is, it's not a misspelling.

It's a bug in the Segoe UI that's cutting off the word. The same bug is causing random paddings and margins across all the labels and descriptions.

I'm still waiting for the database driven file system that was promised last decade. With every new iteration of the OS they say it is coming and then later scrapped.

I don't think it's a bug. Beta testers have been complaining about it for more than 6 months and it's still there. It can be disabled though.

What build are those screenshots from? Mine says "AutoComplete" it's not cut off.

Vista still sucks though

Yep, "as-designed".

I'm spending zero's $20 already.
