I guess I was expecting better service. I've had my Blackberry 8800 for less than 2 weeks now and I've already dropped 7 calls. I can't even remember the last time I dropped a call with Verizon. Sure, I like the phone 100X more than my old RAZR but I am already missing the signal reliability.
I figured that this EDGE network must mean the phone is always on the EDGE of getting a decent signal

You can't beat the signal strength with Verizon, particularly in rural areas (analog/digital network out there is solid). The problem with Verizon is the cost and the limited selection of quality phones.
Also, Verizon is notorious for crippling the Bluetooth capabilities of their phones.
For you, I suggest you switch back to Verizon if you can afford it.

Are you sure the issue isn't with the phone? I remember a friend of mine with a blackberry had awful reception. I've had Cingular for about 6 months now, don't think I've ever dropped a call.
cingular has been having alot of issues with dropping calls lately. Its been going on since mid feb. Anyway, it is not the phones becuase it drops on all phones that i know of, my bros palm 750, dads V3I, moms samsung, my 6270, friends LG and a few others.
I do live in a rural area and that's where I've been having most problems.
I was just hoping it would be better. Frankly, I can't stand the phones and handicaps that Verizon implements.
As far as the phone is concerned, voice quality is great and I love all the features.

When I switched to Cingular I started noticing that sometimes when I call people and don't pick up they sometimes say "I didn't get any calls." And when they called me I noticed that sometimes I don't receive any calls. Mostly Verizon callers, btw so I'm not really sure whos the culprit.
I'm sorry but T-Mobile reception is shitty. Either that or its the Sidekicks.... every time I talk to friends it sounds like they're crumpling paper.

I've had verizon for years now. I just got a Cingular cell for work (Blackjack(). In the first 2 weeks or so, I've dropped around 7-8 calls. I can't remember dropping that many with Verizon in the umpteen years I've had their service. Not impressed with their service so far.

I am also kind of worried about AT&T taking over everything too. I've never liked them.

It all depends where you live. Where I live Cingular has outstanding reception, i never had a drop call, the worst thing that has happened so far was staticy calls and that was only once. Do more research for your area.
