What's a good way to make my PC shut up aside from putting it to sleep or taking a sledge hammer to it?

It's a core 2 duo E6600.

Any recommendations on a heat sink? I'm thinking of maybe going with a fanless heat tube type.
Also thinking of getting a cheapo fanless or super quiet gpu as well.

Kind of irritating turning on my loud ass PC just so i can access all my prawn stored on it.

Guess I've been spoiled by how quiet my 2012 Mac mini is...

Currently have a DLink 4port (D-Link DUB-1340 4-port SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Hub - Newegg.com) and it pisses me off on a daily basis. All the ports seem to be upside down from EVERYTHING else and then half the ports dont work on M,W,F, and the other half dont work on T, TH, F... Occasionally the swap days. If I get two working ports at a time I am lucky.

 

Apparently this months KB3114409 for Outlook 2010 is shit too! It's supposed allow admins to prevent Outlook from opening in safe mode but instead it sucks which causes Outlook to....................... open in safe mode.

Got clients complaining about this one today, just uninstall it from installed updates list in programs and features to fix it.

 

weird, it was installed on my W10 machine but not offered to my W7pro machine (both have Outlook 2010 but I delay the updates on the W7 machine)

yup, 2010. I enjoy actually being able to see the items in the ribbon as separate and distinct instead of the awful mono color, 1 dimensional look 2016 has... I upgraded OneNote and then immediately downgraded. I couldn't tell where one thing ended and the next began.

 

OK Stogie, I need a little help.

One of our clients is in finance and they've been using Symantec Encryption Desktop to encrypt their drives. The recently had to update all their PCs in the office to Windows 10 because the head office wanted to put everyone on the same OS. Symantec was a little behind on supporting 10 and when the new November build came out that broke support for Symantec Encryption. So any PC with their disk encrypted that way will fail doing the upgrade until a compatible version is released and they go and install it. It's a hassle.

So I talked them into replacing it with BitLocker, on the PCs that I was upgrading last week and it seems like they want to replace Symantec with BitLocker on their other PCs in the future. However there's one question. Symantec has a Secure Delete feature that they like to use and BitLocker doesn't. My boss and I don't really see the need for secure delete if the drive is already encrypted. You can't pull the drive and recover data without the recovery key. The only scenario we could see was if a ne'erdogood was sitting at the logged in PC they could maybe recover the deleted file but then they'd already have access to everything else and all the undeleted files as well so you're already fucked.

So is it a big concern that there's no secure delete feature if we remove Symantec and replace it with BitLocker?

 

No. There's a big misconception in this area. Show this to your clients:

NFN is on the right track, TRIM and Wear Leveling prevent the absolutely correct usage of file wiping tools. The actual process is an overwrite of the specific bytes in a file. While this can be accomplished at the logical (file system) level (meaning anyone using file system tools to look at files), at the hardware level the SSD may still contain parts of the file in various memory storgae locations due to (a)temp caching on the SSD for performance, (b)TRIM movement of data resulting in the moved-final location being wiped but not he prior locations, and the inherent hardware interface delay between an overwrite command and its actual complete execution on the memory locations on the SSD.

For practical purposes, you should ask your client what their goal is in using secure file deletion. If it is to prevent a forensic recovery by a bad actor of the deleted data, they should look into a file shredder application like Eraser, etc. that LOGICALLY shreds the file. If they simply don't want people with access (with decrypt password) to the machine to be able to recover recycle bin entries, use SHIFT-DELETE or file shredding apps. If they are concerned about bad actors who DON'T have legitimate access to the file system (no decrypt-password) then the WDE solution is acceptable because even a file siting in the recycler/trash is encrypted at rest.

That Outlook update is a complete fuck up. I'm still getting calls over that and I just removed it from someone who didn't even know it was fucking them up. I saw she had 2010 so I decided to check and sure enough it's running in safe mode. I'll probably be getting calls for months because of it.

Check out uBlock Origin for your ad-blocker needs. I've switched to it from AdBlock/AdBlock Plus. It's much more efficient than any other ad blocker I've used. I think it helped fixed my horrible battery life while using Chrome on OS X, it's on Chrome/FF. It allows you to choose which 3rd party lists you want to use to block shit, though the more lists you choose the more RAM it uses. But it seems like it has access to all the popular list like Fanboy, EasyList, MVPSHost, etc., and even does malware blocking.

There's also uBlock which is different than uBlock Origin. Still uBlock seems better than AdBlock/ABP though

OK, gents... need someone to try something simple for me.

For the most part I have switched to using Chrome from FF for various reasons.

One thing I notice, though, is when I am posting to AZine via Chrome, I am unable to use the CTRL-B and CTRL-U to bold or underline text in the post entry box. In FF these work ok. Is there some way to enable this function in Chrome?

Is this just happening for me or is it universal?

Is it because aliens?

Currently in Chrome, CTRL-B does nothing and CTRL-U opens the "view source" tool.
