I open the update app, it says updates are still paused, I check update history and it installed a bunch of updates on Friday the day that it stopped working.

I could block update.microsoft.com in the HOSTS file but this shit is getting ridiculous.
I think on CB you have to update. On LTSB you apparently do not have to. But even then, I think you get one monthly patch you (but I believe you can defer it)

The monthly patch is what's breaking shit. I edited the HOSTS file to block Windows Update and set Windows update to notify to download in Group Policy, let's see if that works. I don't want to break the Windows Update service but I will if I have to.

Microsoft pulls Windows 10 October 2018 Update after reports of documents being deleted

A major bug has hit some Windows 10 users

Oct 6, 2018

Microsoft has stopped distributing its latest Windows 10 October 2018 Update. The software giant started rolling out the update during the company’s Surface event earlier this week, but some Windows 10 users immediately noticed their documents were being deleted. “We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating,” says Microsoft on its support site for Windows Update.

Microsoft is now recommending that affected users contact the company directly, and if you’ve manually downloaded the October update then “please don’t install it and wait until new media is available.” Other Windows 10 users have been complaining that the Microsoft Edge browser and other store apps have been unable to connect to the internet after the October 2018 Update, and the update was even blocked on certain PCs due to Intel driver incompatibilities.

It’s not clear how many Windows 10 users are affected by the problem, but even if it’s a small percentage it’s still surprising this issue was never picked up during Microsoft’s vast testing of the October update. Millions of people help Microsoft test Windows 10, but the company has struggled with the quality of Windows updates recently. Microsoft delayed its Windows 10 April 2018 Update earlier this year over Blue Screen of Death issues, but those problems were picked up before the update reached regular consumers and businesses.

Microsoft was planning to push the latest October update out to all Windows 10 users next Tuesday, but that’s now likely to be put on hold while investigations continue into this major deletion problem.

What's worse is that multiple people reported this issue to Microsoft during the last 3 months of the beta but they didn't do anything about it. Microsoft wants everyone to post their issue in the Feedback hub but they don't listen and then shit like this happens

Should I check to see if my copy of Win 10 Pro is valid?

Hi,

There is an ongoing issue about Windows 10 suddenly shown as deactivated. The affected users need not to do anything as it is a known issue. Here is what was told by Microsoft Chat support:

Microsoft has just released an Emerging issue announcement about current activation issue related to Pro edition recently. This happens in Japan, Korea, American and many other countries.I am very sorry to inform you that there is a temporary issue with Microsoft's activation server at the moment and some customers might experience this issue where Windows is displayed as not activated.

Our engineers are working tirelessly to resolve this issue and it is expected to be corrected within one to two business days.

The thread would be updated when this resolves. Thank you for your patience.

Edit 1: Users report that Windows activation troubleshooter might say You have a Windows 10 Home license but you are running Windows 10 Pro. You are advised to ignore that message and wait for the fix.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/window...sues-resolved/

On November 8, a number of users who had activated and licensed copies of Windows 10 Pro began receiving messages saying they needed to install Windows 10 Home or go back and purchase a "genuine" copy of Windows. This included both Windows Insider testers and those builds released to mainstream users (including some users with the Windows 10 October 2018 update/1809).

Some users said they had contacted Microsoft support and were told incorrectly they needed to repurchase licenses or somehow obtain new product keys. (And some people said they did this.) Some users also said they followed the instructions they received in the erroneous messages and rolled back to Windows 10 Home.

OK, this may be a dumb question, I am having trouble googling the question and getting an answer...

In W10, I have explorer set to open to This PC. At the top is the section called "Folders". I know I can collapse it to hide it, as there is nothing useful in there for me.

Can I remove the items in there and replace them with folders useful to me?

The new Microsoft Edge is out. It's based on Chromium, so it looks and operates similar to Chrome. It just has all of the Google stuff removed, and is better at blocking trackers. It seems pretty nice
