A 17-year-old hacker has broken the lock that ties Apple's iPhone to AT&T's wireless network, freeing the most hyped cell phone ever for use on the networks of other carriers, including overseas ones.

George Hotz of Glen Rock, N.J., confirmed Friday that he had unlocked an iPhone and was using it on T-Mobile's network, the only major U.S. carrier apart from AT&T that is compatible with the iPhone's cellular technology. In a video posted to his blog, he holds an iPhone that displays "T-Mobile" as the carrier.

And now the kid's work really pays off:
Teen trades hacked iPhone for new car Tue Aug 28, 9:16 AM ET

SAN FRANCISCO - The teenage hacker who managed to unlock the iPhone so that it can be used with cellular networks other than AT&T will be trading his reworked gadget for a new car.

George Hotz, of Glen Rock, N.J., said he had reached the deal with CertiCell, a Louisville, Ky.-based mobile phone repair company.

Hotz posted on his blog that he traded his modified iPhone for "a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones."

"This has been a great end to a great summer," Hotz wrote.

The 17-year-old Hotz said he will be sending the three new iPhones to the three online collaborators who helped him divorce Apple Inc's popular product from AT&T's network. The job took 500 hours, or about 8 hours a day since the iPhone's June 29 launch.

Hotz made the deal with Terry Daidone, co-founder of CertiCell, who also promised the teen a paid consulting job.

"We do not have any plans on the table right now to commercialize Mr. Hotz' discovery," Daidone said in a statement.

haha no i'm here. i ended up taking the SIM card out and just using the wifi / ipod capabilities. but MAN that would be a welcome addition.

I'll need it in October though, cause i'm going to europe again, this time on business, and i'll need my phone. Now the only thing i'm anxiously waiting for is to see if the new update crushes the whole jailbreaking / unlocking thing. I really want to do that

IMO, one of the most useful things Apple could add is 802.1X authentication for WiFi connections. I have to assume this is fairly high on the to-do list since I know I'm far from alone in wanting this feature.

From a security perspective, there's three types of wireless networks. The iPhone currently supports A & B.

A) Wide open: all you need to know is the name of the network and you're on.

B) Pre-shared key: this is the way home wireless is usually setup. You establish a "password" on the wireless hardware and any person and/or computer that knows the network name and that password can get on.

C) "Enterprise" authentication: Wireless connections need to be verified with a specific username and password. In setups like this, your wireless connection authenticates you, the individual person, against the same username/password you use to sign on to the overall network. This also gives admins the level of control where they can say Joe can connect but John isn't allowed to. 802.1X is the means by which this type of authentication happens.

Sounds pretty esoteric but it's practically ubiquitous on corporate wireless networks and is becoming very prevalent in college/university settings as well.

New firmware v 1.1.1 released today:

New features include:

• iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
• Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
• Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites or music controls
• Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
• Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
• Stocks and cities in Stocks and Weather can be re-ordered
• Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
• Support for TV Out
• Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
• New Passcode lock time intervals
• Adjustable alert volume

it WILL reverse unlocked phones, so if you have an unlocked or jailbreaked phone, don't update

i am very happy about disabling EDGE when roaming internationally

Gotta a qwik question... My sister is considering a iphone. Does anyone know if you can use one to connect to a computer remotely? And if not, does any smart phone allow you to do this?

ugh, i have a slightly older version of itues (7.4.1), and didn't update because of an easy ringtone "hack" that lets you put whatever ringtone you want on the phone.

Now the old version won't detect the new iphone update, which will force me to update my itunes and lose my custom ringtone.

Hey Apple, I'm really starting to get sick of this shit. The iPhone is the new PSP

Apple Inc. has issued a software update that creates problems for iPhones modified to work with a cellular carrier other than AT&T Inc.

Apple warned earlier this week that the iPhone update — which adds access to the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store and fixes some security flaws — could permanently disable phones running programs that untether phones from its exclusive partner's network.

Several gadget enthusiast Web sites, including Gizmodo and Engadget, as well as online postings from hacker communities reported that, depending on which unlocking program was used, certain modified phones no longer worked after they installed Thursday's software update. In some cases, the phones worked, but only with the original SIM card that ties the phone to AT&T.

Something tells me that its not really Apples fault. I'm sure its heavy pressure from the music industry. Somehow I doubt they make much off a 99 cent ringtone.

Nothing special enough about the new update to warrant using it vs all my custom shit apps, but like i said before, just wait until things are ironed out. Anyone who wants the update but has an unlocked or modded iphone will have to wait a few days till a couple of weeks before there is an answer to apple's firmware. Ahhhh the game we play. I've played this game with sony and the PSP as well, it's fun.
