but it IS a restore.

After you restore the iPhone, when iTunes detects it, it asks if you want to set the iPhone up as a new phone or restore from a previous backup.

The backup contains all the settings you had before the restore, so as soon as you sync your backup, all the settings and apps and whatever get synced back to the phone.

If you set it up as a new phone then it's pretty much a brand new phone.

^ hence it's not a restore

restore means it's retrieving contents of your previously synced phone
setting up a new phone is.. just setting up a new phone.. not a restore

or that's my interpretation heh

You guys are using restore in place of sync and confusing each other

If you restore your phone then none of your jailbreak settings will port over, but as soon as you sync to a previous backup some settings are transferred in.

Oh and did I mention that I've already lost a call cause of this antennae fiasco. This phone isn't very left hand friendly. Weren't they supposed to release an update today that fixes everything? Yeah I knew that was bullshit when I heard it!

Make it Mine edits settings/data in your Library. iTunes backs it up when you perform a sync. When you sync those settings to your clean iPhone, the MiM settings are transferred back in. Your're unable to edit them without SSHing a clean copy of your Library, or editing it back to what it was with MiM.

You need to remember to empty & delete your folders in Categories, unhide any apps you may have hidden, and reset any customizations when you're planning to sync to a jailbroken backup in the future.

great.

actually after using black one for few days, i'm going to change my mind and return it to apple

i'm going to wait for the white one

this black one other than the screen (and probably the speed), i don't feel much difference with my 3GS... so i wanna give a white one try

That's funny... first read that a color of the phone will change it operating characteristics.

Maybe the white one will have all the "bugs" ironed out, because they're made later(?)

I'm really digging the ability to see what's inside created folders. Other than that, it's basically the same as 3.0

Okay so I just gave multitasking a shot for the first time...
Opened Pandora,
Double tap home,
Opened Safari... Voilà!

BUT! How do I quit Pandora when I don't want to use it anymore?!

I paused Pandora and exited it thinking it would kill the app but I returned to it and it loads it as if it was always in the background, ready to resume playback. Does it die after being idle for a certain amount of time? Or will it hog memory forever?

Luckily I have SBSettings and simply killed Pandora in the Processes button, but what are non-jb'ers doing?

I also noticed that some apps that normally die after I exited them on 3.1.2 are coming up as a running process in SBSettings now that I have iOS4 I will kill multitasking with fire once I figure out a way.

iOS4 pauses an app and when you run out of RAM it closes the oldest apps first to free up RAM. If you want to close automatically which you shouldn't need to you can hold down on an app icon in the multitasking pop up list and then the minus sign will appear.

What he said.

Some apps aren't running when you switch away. They're just paused and not using any resources.

man... if you don't close it, there are like 20 apps in the background (i know they are not actually running)

but if they take space in memory like some of you mentioned, wouldn't that be eating up some unnecessary batter as well (not by much, but still)...??

i try to close the ones that don't support multitasking whenever i get chance to
no point putting them on the task bar if they reload and does pretty much same way as starting it new...

I got iOS4 on my 3G. Both unlocked and jailbroken. I'm having trouble getting picture messaging to work, but I got my internet up and running.
Any help?

so, there was NO announcement of any sort regarding a firmware update, huh? I guess it was just a rumor.

I'm still debating if I should get my ass up at the crack of dawn and drive down to the AT&T store to see if they got any in stock... supposedly tomorrow they're suppose to.

For those with iPhone4 coming from the 3GS, do you see SIGNIFICANT increase in performance (processor speed)? Because I saw this video (http://dvice.com/archives/2010/06/video-how-much.php) and the speed of the iPhone4 is just slightly better. Ignore the stupid internet speedtest though. That was dumb to use wifi test.

I'm not being biased towards the 3GS because I still have the 3G.

WTF? That wifi speed difference can't be right. If it is, that's nuts!

One test that a reviewer did when he compared the Droid Incredible vs. the 3GS was he loaded the same page on the same wifi network and he scrolled all the way down to the bottom of the page as fast as he could. The Incredible loaded up everything instantly, almost no problems (only very slight stuttering) while the 3GS had that checkerboard loading background. I noticed the checkerboard on the iPhone 4 also.

they've been lying to people at our apple store saying they are out... and then somebody with a pre-order walks in and gets a phone in 5 minutes...

but ATT has them today. so far they only have 10 people in line.

Apple stores have none. Tried three in the area this weekend, they had no idea when they would be restocked and offered to put me on a wait list.

There was a rumor going around yesterday that their next shipment might be 7/22, but that's probably BS, unless they're holding off shipments to resolve any reception issues.

Best Buy said they might have them in a few weeks.

Might give the AT&T store a call this afternoon.

Happened to me a couple times too. In the middle of a call, the "hold" or "mute" button gets pressed and the other person can't hear me anymore. It's getting annoying.
