Apple: iPhone News and Discussion Thread
I tell ya what aside from the first few weeks of owning a FaceTime capable iPhone, I NEVER use it. Hell I barely make phone calls anymore.
Let me look up my usage...
Lifetime: 6 hours, 17 minutes. And I've had the phone since Day 1 iPhone 5 so what, 15 months?
1000s of texts though...

It's too bad, but I find myself wasting *MORE* time with TouchID in the car, defeating the purpose. I might as well just hit the button and enter the code instead of wasting the time on three attempts and then entering the code.
It's not a problem with the firmware. It's just that so many of us in our daily pursuits and jobs will get a little dirt on the button. It might even be invisible to you, but a quick cleaning of the phone restores full functionality and you realize you've just been getting the button dirty.
The good news is that the sapphire button seems sturdy enough. Many of us were a little worried about that because the button feels very different from previous iPhones.

Odd. I use my 5s heavily and TouchID works each and every time. Only time it fails is if I have a bit of moisture on my thumb, picking up a glass with condensation on it and then using my phone. Dirt and every other use case works just fine.

Maybe I'll figure out how to keep it clean. I don't even know where it's coming from, necessarily, although I will typically drive about 120 miles/day. Maybe I'm transferring oils from the steering wheel.
There are many activities (including many jobs) that will cause you to leave enough dirt on the button to screw up TouchID.

Eh truthfully, TouchID is a take it or leave it feature. Tends to impede the process of unlocking my phone more often than not. If I were to do it over, I'd have kept my 5 or gotten a 5C (they're actually really nice, feel great in the hand (that's what she said)), but oh well.
Some people aren't too happy with the fingerprint sensor on the iPhone 5-S.
They're complaining it barely works half the time, but there may be a simple workaround.
Apple recommends re-scanning your finger or thumb, making sure it's clean and dry... but since Touch ID lets you scan and store up to five different fingers, some users have found that re-scanning your thumb multiple times and telling your iPhone that it's different fingers, increases the accuracy and reliability of the scanner.
And as always, Apple recommends keeping your phone locked for security and privacy.

Not sure where to put this, my guess is here...
Apple Confirms Acquisition of Kinect Maker 3-D Sensor Startup PrimeSense

What I've never seen mentioned in these articles is that when Primesense first started shopping their product years ago their first stop was Apple and they turned them down. So they ended up with Microsoft and you know what happened after that.
Apple Confirms Acquisition of Kinect Maker 3-D Sensor Startup PrimeSense
Apple has completed its acquisition of PrimeSense, the Israel-based company focused on 3-D sensor technology, for a price sources said was around $360 million.
Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet confirmed the PrimeSense deal with the boilerplate comment the company typically provides when news of one of its acquisitions leaks: “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”
The exit marks the end of months of deliberation between the two companies, finally bringing the semiconductor company responsible for advances in motion and depth capture under Apple’s aegis.
The talks were first reported by Israeli news outlet Calcalist back in July, and news of the acquisition was reported earlier on Sunday by Globes.
PrimeSense became widely known in the sensor technology space for its early work with Microsoft’s Kinect gaming product, which uses cameras and depth sensors to capture players’ motions and incorporate them into Xbox gameplay. (Microsoft now deploys its own homegrown sensor technology for the current generation of Kinect devices, which ship with the recently launched Xbox One.)
In subsequent years, PrimeSense has expanded its product line to include more hardware than the original large, stationary sensor seen in the Kinect, creating new, smaller sensors targeted at more compact devices. The company’s Capri model, for example, seems particularly well suited for the mobile market.
PrimeSense’s technology could be used in any number of Apple’s actual and hypothetical products in development, including the long-rumored Apple television set or an Apple-made smartwatch.
This is not the first Israeli-based acquisition Apple has made. The Cupertino, Calif.-based hardware giant purchased Anobit — a supplier of high-performance flash memory controllers — earlier this year for a reported sum of $500 million.
PrimeSense had raised upward of $80 million in funding from firms such as Silver Lake Sumeru, Canaan Partners, Gemini Israel and Genesis Partners.

PrimeSense, the day after Kinect

Our plans for the future are far more diverse and promising than they were a year ago – two years ago. We’re full of spirit, and looking forward for the opportunity to do some amazing things.”
What?
“I’ll give you an example. I have a 12 year old girl, and once a month she stands by the wall, and we mark her height. That little ceremony is going to disappear soon, because smartphones using our system will enable the depth camera to determine the height of a child through photography. All measurements will be taken immediately. We’re talking about something completely new here. This is no longer just games and gestures, it’s a completely different understanding of the environment.”

Apple has released iOS 7.1 beta 2 to developers. The update is available through Apple’s developer portal, as well as an over-the-air update for iOS 7.1 beta 1 devices. Initial discoveries within the beta include changes to the iPhone/iPod touch version of Calendar, plus some very small tweaks to settings, including the creation of a top-level settings menu for passcode management, the addition of a third color-modified version of a prior piece of background art, and an accessibility option to create underlines or shadowy boxes for text-format buttons.
Apple has also released an update to its Apple TV beta software, and a new Xcode beta as well.

Please tell me the "fixed" calendar and made it more like the previous version where you can see each calendar day "square" and corresponding colored appointment.
The people who are most likely to come out with a jailbreak say that the move to 7.0.4 is okay because it doesn't make it any less likely that their methods will work when they get around to the jailbreak.
I honestly believe that the delay is that they're not under as much pressure from heavy users as they used to be, because iOS 7.0-plus includes so many of the features that people used to jailbreak to get!!
:-)
iBlacklist would probably be better than the manipulations of DND mode that we're using now...but only a little better.
Lots of drama with Evad3rs and Saurik and other BS. Bottom line is that this version is pretty useless since most of Cydia's tweaks aren't up to date because mobile substrate isn't ready yet. I'm checking idownloadblog.com for updates.
I put it on my Ipad Mini R and then tried a winterboard theme that did nothing. Didnt break anything, but didnt do much. Read that Jay from Saurik was blindsided by it and that there is a possibility of Chinese hacking, etc. Restored back.
After having unlimited data on my account since they day I bought the OG iPhone on release day...I have dropped it and switched over to a mobile share plan.
I went back through the last 2 years and I NEVER went over 3gb/mos I avg 2.2GB.
So, its worth the $50 savings a month. I do have to admit...it was hard to hit the submit button

Sarlacc, what an effin coincidence....
I have been thinking of doing the same....how do you like the mobile share plan?
EDIT: currently, I use about 4gigs of data on an average and the wifey uses about a gig (she has the 2gb plan)...I was thinking of the 6gb mobile share plan

I have 3 phones on my plan: mine, my wife, and my sister in law. I was paying $200/month for 700 minutes, unlimited text, I had unlimited, wife had 2gb, SIL had 3GB.
Total for the last year we never went over 8GB a month.
BUT...any mobile share plan UNDER 10GB/Month makes each phone on the plan $40/ each...10GB and the phones are $15/each.
So, now Im at $145/mos before my union discount, which is another $22.

also, did u get an individual plan or the share plan?
currently we are at $60 (700 minutes) + $20 (unlimited texting) + $30 (unlimited data for me) + $25 (2gb for the wifey) = $135 - discounts + taxes
for the mobile share am guessing its gonna be $80 (for 6gb) + $25 (for me) and + $25 (for the wifey) = $130
and does the $25 each include both of us getting a phone or is that separate?
EDIT: I didnt see your post before I posted this up

I wish they'd release 7.1 already. I'm getting really fucking annoyed.
I can't delete ANY text messages otherwise the phone becomes slow as shit, and refuses to send or receive any messages. I'm forced to restart the phone and all the messages return. I have shit from the beginning of Dec.
Now it says I have one unread message when everything has been read. Only thing I can think of is my dad sent a message to me and two others and I did not get it for some reason when the other two did.
And last night and this morning, it would not sync any music. I had to erase all the music on the iPhone and then add all 3500 songs back.

Apple is dragging this shit along for too long. They know it's a horrible iOS and they've done nothing to fix it.
