What's up with the 4s losing volume? 2 people I know have this issue. The only sound that comes out is the ringer. Not text, video, music nothing. Only with headphones on does the sound work completely. The vibrator switch on the side is set to ring so not that. The volume button only affect ringer volume. In the settings the volume meter is also only for the ringer. If in the Music app the volume is greyed out. A Google search shows people having to blow out dirt out of the headphones hole but then why would the ringer work. Anyone heard of this or know how to fix? Obvoiusly Genius bar is last resort but both are very busy people.

I got that a couple times in the past...I always figured it was a glitch that happened when going from bluetooth or headphones, etc.

I would just re-start my phone and it would be fine.

The fingerprint reader is useful. I use it and it has a nice wow factor when I show it off. The speed of the 5s is fast, but not that much faster then the 5. Camera seems good and the slow mo video is neat. Looking forward to apps that will take advantage of the processor.

Hopefully someone might be able to help answer my question: I have 4 lines on my att account (me, my wife and my parents) me and my wife have smartphones and parents use basic phones so I used my parents lines to order me and my wife iphone 5s since our lines weren't eligible for upgrade for another year yet but now how can I activate my phones with mine and my wife's SIM cards? My put my SIM card in the iphone 5s and it says something like please confirm number and it shows my dads number and if this is the the correct number please call att. I want to avoid calling att if possible. Any thoughts??

You have to call att. They have to switch the imei numbers on your account. If they even will do that for you since the phones are under contract.

I hope they will. That makes me wonder how do all the people that preorder phones and sell them on eBay get away with this.

Going through my room I found an OG iPhone and two 3G ones haha. I wonder what I can use them for, if anything. They're all jailbroken too.

I pay full retail, i.e. $699 for the most recent iphone and throw them on ebay. I I tried to buy one outright at full retail at the Verizon store but they said I couldn't on opening day. I didn't want to keep my Verizon contract so I asked if I could buy it for the $199, keep the service another month and then pay the ETF like you used to be able to. The rep said Verizon is viewing this as fraud now and will charge you the ETF and the full retail price. Walmart however just sold them out right but I don't think they were supposed to.

Apple and the carriers are really trying to crack down on the resale by only allowing people to get a phone attached to an account now so I'm not really sure how preorders are working on ebay now.

Fingerprints are Usernames, not Passwords

As one of the maintainers of eCryptfs, and a long time Thinkpad owner, I have been asked many times to add support to eCryptfs for Thinkpad's fingerprint readers.

I actually captured this as a wishlist bug in Launchpad in August 2008, but upon thinking about it a bit more, I later closed the bug "won't fix" in February 2009, and discussed in a blog post, saying:
Hi, thanks so much for the bug report.I've been thinking about this quite a bit lately. I'm going to have to mark this "won't fix" for now.The prevailing opinion from security professionals is that fingerprints are perhaps a good replacement for usernames. However, they're really not a good replacement for passwords.

Consider your laptop... How many fingerprints of yours are there on your laptop right now? As such, it's about as secret as your username. You don't leave your password on your spacebar, or on your beer bottle :-)This wikipedia entry (although it's about Microsoft Fingerprint Readers) is pretty accurate: * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microso...erprint_Reader So, I'm sorry, but I don't think we'll be fixing this for now.
There may be civil liberties at issue as well. While this piece is satire and Apple says that it is not sharing fingerprints with the government, we've been kept in the dark about such things before. I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions on that one.

But let's just say you're okay with Apple sharing your fingerprints with the NSA, as I've already told you, they're not private at all. You leave them on everything you touch. And let's say you're insistent on using fingerprint (biometric) technology because you can. In that case, your fingerprints might identify you, much as a your email address or username identifies you, perhaps from a list.

I could see some value, perhaps, in a tablet that I share with my wife, where each of us have our own accounts, with independent configurations, apps, and settings. We could each conveniently identify ourselves by our fingerprint. But biometrics cannot, and absolutely must not, be used to authenticate an identity. For authentication, you need a password or passphrase. Something that can be independently chosen, changed, and rotated. I will continue to advocate this within the Ubuntu development community, as I have since 2009.

Once your fingerprint is compromised (and, yes, it almost certainly already is, if you've crossed an international border or registered for a driver's license in most US states), how do you change it? Are you starting to see why this is a really bad idea?

So please, if you have any respect for the privacy your data, or your contacts' information, please don't use fingerprints (or biometrics, in general) for authentication.

kthxbye,

:-Dustin

ios7 is working well for me so far. Only thing I've noticed that didn't happen in the past is that whenever I plug my phone into my car charger it says something like the device may not work correctly because it isnt authenticated; forgot the exact wordage but it i something like that. Also it has asked several times now if I want to trust my computer when I link it with itunes.

Ditto. This is annoying.
Also I turned off data for Angry Birds and it keeps telling me that I turned it off. I KNOW!

It's a new feature that only allows you to sync with approved computers. Just approve it and it shouldn't ask anymore AFAIK.

also IMj is the cable an approved iPhone accesory or aftermarket?

I already approved it to trust my computer but it has popped up something like 2 more times since then

And hell if I know if the cable is "approved" lol. I got it on Amazon. It works great and still charges even when I get that message so I don't care.

I'm guessing its a 3rd party cable. I think they did that because of the iPhones that blow up with 3rd party cables. Just as a warning so they won't get sued.

No rice on hand... Asked the resident Asian in the office and she took her rice home as with her rice cooker.. So rice is out... And I dont have time to run to the store.. I'm pretty sure I fucked it anyways.. It was still on when I pulled it out. Screen flickered and went off.. So I turned it back on.. It came on, screen flickered and it went back off.. Rince/Repeat 2 more times... Now it wont turn on at all..

I'm not so mad at the fact that I dropped my phone in the water, more pissed off at the fact that I have to resort to the company POS blackberry.. FML.

^^^ just for future reference....if you drop the phone (or any electronic) in water, NEVER TURN IT ON !!!

when you turn it on, current passes through the circuitry which might short something since water conducts electricity....if it turns off, make sure the device is completely dry...a lot of peeps put the phone in a rice bag in the freezer...or just leave it outside over night....and then turn it on....

Also Apple knows that it got wet because of a strip inside the phone that changes color when wet.

Also, I learned the hard way not to open up Iphones anymore.

ALL DEVICES have that....my Sony Ericsson back in 2004 had it too...a little white sticker which turns pinkish when exposed to moisture and red when exposed to water (a lot of moisture)
