iPhone 4's 5MP Camera Won't Fit in Current iPod Touch Design

iPod touch (left) and iPhone 4 camera (right)
After we heard today's rumors claiming that the next iPod touch might be getting the iPhone 4's 5-megapixel camera, we asked iFixit's Kyle Wiens if that would even be possible given the sizes of the parts involved. iFixit offers repair guides (iPhone 4 guide) and parts for Apple products and has made a name for itself by posting detailed product teardowns.
This issue of camera size is one we've seen before. The iPod nano, for example, contains a video-only camera but is unable to take still photos. Steve Jobs explained the reason to the The New York Times:
I also asked him why the Nano can record video, but can't snap still photos. That reason, he said, is technical: the sensors you need to record video are extremely thin these days -- thin enough to fit into the wafer-thin Nano. But the ones with enough resolution for stills, especially with autofocus (like the sensor in the iPhone), are much too thick to cram into a player that’s only 0.2 inches thick.
Wiens reports on the relative sizes of the hardware in question:
- iPhone 4 5MP (back) camera: 6.5mm
- iPhone 4 FaceTime (front) camera: 2.5mm
- iPod touch width (at edges): 6mm
The iPod touch dimensions don't include the casing and display, so actual usable space is smaller than the 6mm shown. This shows that the iPhone 4's back camera can not fit in the iPod touch, though the front FaceTime camera could. It's possible that Apple might "square off" the iPod touch design like the iPhone 4, but even so, Wiens still isn't sure that it would be possible in the current dimensions. That would mean Apple would have to make the iPod touch thicker as well as "squaring off" the design to accommodate the 5MP camera.
Given the early iPod touch parts and Apple's push for FaceTime, it seems likely that the next iPod touch will have a front-facing FaceTime camera, but the same high quality 5MP iPhone 4 camera seems less likely.

Here's a video I made with the iPhone 4. It's a good example of audio quality and low light capability

Anyone using the Line 2 app? http://www.line2.com/?site=www.softs...Fc9J2godZwuiwg
I'm thinking of cutting my minutes in half and picking up this service. I'm in a good wifi hotspot 90% of the time.

My iPhone was delivered today. I must say, I'm really liking it! I'm posting from it now.
I LOVE the clarity of the display. I notice reception change when I hold the phone certain ways, but I don't seem to have severe problems with it. I plan to order a case soon anyway. Has the fix been released yet?

You could use whatever program you use to import your photos. I prefer Windows Live essentials over picasa.
download.live.com
However in my case I used iPhoto but it's pretty much the same thing. you have to use the photo program to import pics and videos and then I used iMovie to upload to youtube. you can do the samething with live photo and movie maker combo in pretty much the same steps.

I'm sure some of you saw this today but Consumer Reports is now not recommending the iPhone 4 because of the antenna problem.

If Apple was thinking that this problem would just go away, they're wrong. It's only going to get worse when the Android phones start attacking Apple over this. Apple could have a Windows Vista perception problem on their hand. If everyone keeps saying the phone sucks even if it doesn't, it's going to stick and iPhone sales will be affected and this recent development sure won't help. Android's already activating over 165,000 phones a day at last count which is 5 million phones a MONTH and growing at an accelerated rate. In february Android marketshare was 9% in may it was 13% it grew almost 50% in three months. This antenna issue couldn't have come at a worse time for Apple. It'll be interesting to see how this antenna problem plays out in other countries that don't have the iPhone 4 yet but all now about the problem, will people pass on the phone for another???

Why Consumer Reports can't recommend iPhone 4
By ConsumerReports.org
Lab tests: Why Consumer Reports can't recommend the iPhone 4.
It's official. Consumer Reports' engineers have just completed testing the iPhone 4, and have confirmed that there is a problem with its reception. When your finger or hand touches a spot on the phone's lower left side—an easy thing, especially for lefties—the signal can significantly degrade enough to cause you to lose your connection altogether if you're in an area with a weak signal. Due to this problem, we can't recommend the iPhone 4.

Consumer Reports has no relationship with any advertisers on Yahoo!
We reached this conclusion after testing all three of our iPhone 4s (purchased at three separate retailers in the New York area) in the controlled environment of CU's radio frequency (RF) isolation chamber. In this room, which is impervious to outside radio signals, our test engineers connected the phones to our base-station emulator, a device that simulates carrier cell towers (see video: IPhone 4 Design Defect Confirmed). We also tested several other AT&T phones the same way, including the iPhone 3G S and the Palm Pre. None of those phones had the signal-loss problems of the iPhone 4.
Our findings call into question the recent claim by Apple that the iPhone 4's signal-strength issues were largely an optical illusion caused by faulty software that "mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength."
The tests also indicate that AT&T's network might not be the primary suspect in the iPhone 4's much-reported signal woes..
We did, however, find an affordable solution for suffering iPhone 4 users: Cover the antenna gap with a piece of duct tape or another thick, non-conductive material. It may not be pretty, but it works. We also expect that using a case would remedy the problem. We'll test a few cases this week and report back.
The signal problem is the reason that we did not cite the iPhone 4 as a "recommended" model, even though its score in our other tests placed it atop the latest Ratings of smart phones that were released today.
The iPhone scored high, in part because it sports the sharpest display and best video camera we've seen on any phone, and even outshines its high-scoring predecessors with improved battery life and such new features as a front-facing camera for video chats and a built-in gyroscope that turns the phone into a super-responsive game controller. But Apple needs to come up with a permanent—and free—fix for the antenna problem before we can recommend the iPhone 4.
If you want an iPhone that works well without a masking-tape fix, we continue to recommend an older model, the 3G S.

Of what needs to be fixed in software update:
-Proximity Sensor - Horrible! Can't use phone as a phone because it mutes people.
-Bluetooth Autopairing - Version 4 issue because my wife's 3Gs does the same thing now after the update. Both our cars used to have no problem, now its hit or miss.

Every fucking phone call I was on today I kept hitting speakerphone and then the numberpad and somehow I was looking up contacts! Then the damn antenna issue I had people complaining that they couldn't hear me and I was breaking up and it goes away as soon as I remember I can't hold this phone the way I naturally want to hold it!
I'm really starting to think about returning this phone, IDK if the screen and camera are worth this bullshit!

Try exchanging it cause the proximity sensor probably isn't a software issue but hardware.
The deathgrip I'm using a case so no issues.
