This is the first product from Apple that has received such strong hatred from the techy people. They're usually the first to jump on the bandwagon. yeah you have your Apple haters just like you have your MS haters but this is more than that, if you read digg every article made popular about the iPad has been against it. This also has been the most non-essential product Apple has made and I think it is the fact that it was proclaimed to be magical and revolutionary when in reality it's an unnecessary luxury item. I think that's what the hate is all about.

Apple doesn't have one essential product, and all of them are unnecessary luxury items...The Ipad is just a little more unnecessary then some others (such as a phone and computer)...

On the fence. Robb almost had me talked into one of these the other day. And I wimped out.

So........ Do it? Wait for the 3G (really don't want another data payment) or fawk it and spend the money on a whore?

My vote would be whore first. If you aren't willing to do that, then I say wait for the 3G. I bought the Wi-fi only, already regretting it. I'm going to return it and get the 3G version. Having another data plan sucks, but 30 bucks for unlimited data isn't too bad.

The idea of having the 3g model makes sense, but would totally cannibalize the data plan on the iphone.

A co-worker brought one in today and I got my hands on it. I hate it... Only because I really wanted to hate it, but I love it...

Two things I really wish it had: USB port and wired ethernet. I know wires are such a thing of the past, but the honest truth is as an IT guy I frequently don't have the luxury of being on an established and fully configured network ie. no wifi.

I'm waiting for a way (hack) to enable tethering with your iPhone.....

You know it's just a matter of time until it happens.

I can use the netshare app that was released on the app store a couple years back but I still have to create a wifi network with a laptop first. So I'd have to create an ad hoc network with my laptop, statically assign my iPhone as the gateway for that network then have my iPad join that network and then I wouldn't need my laptop anymore. It's an workaround but it would work.

Remember a few years back when almost every wifi network was unprotected, too bad those days are gone.

If you have an iPhone, tethering is on the way. Shit, they can use the iPhone to tether w/ a normal laptop, won't be hard on the iPad.

But, for folks like me who don't *gasp* own an iPhone, I think the 3G will be nice considering that there's no contract, so you just pay $30 if you really think you're going to use it on the go a lot, which is what I'll probably end up waiting for.

The iPad is off the hook

I am typing this from my iPad as we speak. I bought the iPad because I am one that surfs the net from my bed while watching tv. I had a Dell laptop I would also
Ways use but the. One day it stopes picking up my wifi and I tried everything and for some reason it refuses to connect. Others always use the desktop at my home and I am sick of all the viruses and I am sick of fixing it, so I do not use thus do not have to fix. So for the last year I would surf from my iPhone and watch u tube from iPhone. This thing is perfect for me but I am not one to use anything except the net and YouTube. I just got if up about a hour ago but this thing kicks ass!! It is super quick on my wifi and it is sexy as hell.
My dad was even impressed and it takes a lot to impress him. I got the 16gb cuz like I said only using it to surf, mail and YouTube . Might check out the bookstore if there some good free books.. I know the apps can get $$ but i will try to hold back from buying apps if I can.. There a few free ones I will prob download to check it out.. And typeing is easy on this thing.. The haters will be buying this soon!!!

If you have to have a first gen iPad, I'd wait for 3G just to get the GPS and the option for the 3G data.

I will wait to see what new features and price drops await in the second or third gen before I consider buying one.

Dude, its not a mystery box, you know what it does....

I was at Best Buy and everyone was playing with it asking each other whether we should buy it or not....

If you want to watch movies and play Iphone type of games and use iphone types of apps in the house or at a hotspot, get a wifi one. If you mainly want to watch videos and listen to music, then you shouldn't worry about 3g, however, you would probably fare better with an Ipod and a portable DVD player.

For me, I would get the 3G one, because the biggest use I would have is remote IT support (using RDP and Team Viewer)..However, I have 3 laptops already, so not sure if its worth it to me...

I was real happy to see they went with that, rather than 800x600 or whatever.

I haven't mentioned it yet but now let me show you what I'M using this device for. This was the plan I had in mind when I was at the store looking at this thing and I'm quite happy that it's going along so smoothly (besides the iPad wifi bug cockblock).

I have a hyper-v virtualization server that has on it a total of 2.5TB of storage that I use for a variety of things. I'm using a Server 2008 R2 host VM as file share and I'm currently in the process of ripping all of the good DVDs in the house and then converting them to h.264 MP4s to store on the server. I'm setting up the movies library in Windows Media Center (I'll discuss that when I'm done in the 7 thread) and I've setup the two macs to connect to the server and they can now stream movies in your collection over wifi using VLC player.

But with the iPad I found this app called FileBrowser and it is exactly what I wanted. It allows me to connect to my Windows or Mac machines and view files just like Explorer or Finder do. I can then stream video or music to my iPad from any machine in the house(which currently isn't only but 20-30ft since apple hasn't fixed the wifi bug yet). I can copy these files to my iPad I can even then copy files those same files from my iPad to another machine. So I can copy files between machines without being at either of them and I can also delete files from my machines.

It's worked wonderfully for me, I just had to enter my login info for each machine and it connects almost instantly to your machine, it's a very snappy responsive app and it was only $3 which was an introductory price so if this is what you're looking for I'd jump on it. Highly Recommended!

If you get disconnected and it keeps rejecting your attempts to re-join, or it asks you to re-enter your network key, cancel and go into your settings. Increase your brightness (or if you're already maxed, decrease and then increase). Then go back and re-join the network. Every time I've done this, it re-connects me to the network on the first try, without having to re-enter my network key. I have no idea how or why this works.

yeah I heard that. That scares me and makes me think it's a hardware problem caused by the interference of the LED backlights or something messing up the wifi chip.

I didn't know specifically of this program but I knew it had to exist and it's exactly why I chose the 32gb over the 64gb.
