Apple: iPad News and Discussion Thread

Thats a different argument and one I would agree with, but at same time one can argue the same with photography. Do you shoot in 4:3?
I would have have rather had a less "square" shaped ipad. No clue why they didnt go that route. But they did. And in the end it has no real effect on the movie watching experience on the device.

For what it's worth, I shoot almost exclusively in 4:5 now because my standard prints are 16x20 on 17x22. I try to keep panos at 3:1 just because I find that to be the most natural for wide vistas.

iPhone SDK calls out nonexistent iPad cam, confirms split views and popovers are iPad-specific
Posted Jan 27th 2010 6:54PM by Chris Ziegler
iPhone owners holding out hope that OS 3.2 would bring some of these fancy new iPad spoils to their devices might be in for a disappointment, because two of the big ones -- split view and popovers -- are both referred to in Apple's updated human interface guidelines as "iPad-only." Realistically, this shouldn't come as a surprise; both of these UI elements were built to shine on larger displays, and it's hard to say how you could make either one of them work on HVGA -- but it's important for devs to note that heavily investing in these are definitely going to make it difficult to make their apps compatible across all iPhone OS-powered devices. Considering that iPhones will almost certainly continue to dominate iPads for sales volume, we know how we'd be developing.
In other news, running the updated iPhone simulator in iPad mode gives you the option to take photos, which doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense considering that it doesn't have a camera. There are plenty of plausible explanations for the muck-up, but our guess is that Apple's left the vestigial capability on-board since the framework's already in place for the iPhone and there could very well be iPads down the road that have a cam (or two). Follow the break for a shot of the iPad's Address Book imploring you to take a photo -- and savor it, since it's probably the closest you'll actually get to snapping a shot on the device any time soon.

Mini-SIM = "Magical and Revolutionary" or just another way to get another $30/mo out of you?
Since Apple is selling these things unlocked, I'm guessing they're doing this to keep their telecom partners happy. I mean, there's no possible way they can say that there's not enough space in this 10" tablet, but they can somehow fit one in an iPhone.

Actually, have they said if you can tether to your iPhone via bluetooth in the non-3G version? I do that with my phone and laptop regularly and it's handy, although it kills the battery quickly.

Not unlocked for all GSM networks, I might be wrong.

I like how every page that steve visited in the keynote had some sort of flash error on it. Not having flash on the iPhone isn't the end of the world since its a small screen. But once you get to this size and really sticks out like a sore thumb. that's great you can watch videos on youtube but I can't go to say gizmodo and look at their videos. HTML5 isn't here yet, it hasn't even been finalized yet. No browser claims full HTML5 support yet and even then the vast majority of browser only support a small portion of it if any at all (ie6, ie7, ie8, FF3.0). So HTML5 is gonna be at least two more years but still there is a place for flash and silverlight in the internet cause HTML5 doesn't do all of the stuff that those plugins can do.

Seems like almost all the opinions I've heard on this device have been negative or that's it's got potential....maybe.
Here's Engadget's take, mostly meh with some wait and see
http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/27/e...t-on-the-ipad/
Should I be surprised that the number one story on Digg right now is Gizmodo's "8 things that suck about the iPad"? and most of the commenters on that story are negative

Big, Ugly Bezel
Have you seen the bezel on this thing?! It's huge! I know you don't want to accidentally input a command when your thumb is holding it, but come on.
No Multitasking
This is a backbreaker. If this is supposed to be a replacement for netbooks, how can it possibly not have multitasking? Are you saying I can't listen to Pandora while writing a document? I can't have my Twitter app open at the same time as my browser? I can't have AIM open at the same time as my email? Are you kidding me? This alone guarantees that I will not buy this product.
No Cameras
No front facing camera is one thing. But no back facing camera either? Why the hell not? I can't imagine what the downside was for including at least one camera. Could this thing not handle video iChat?
Touch Keyboard
So much for Apple revolutionizing tablet inputs; this is the same big, ugly touchscreen keyboard we've seen on other tablets, and unless you're lying on the couch with your knees propping it up, it'll be awkward to use.
No HDMI Out
Want to watch those nice HD videos you downloaded from iTunes on your TV? Too damned bad! If you were truly loyal, you'd just buy an AppleTV already.
The Name iPad
Get ready for Maxi pad jokes, and lots of 'em!
No Flash
No Flash is annoying but not a dealbreaker on the iPhone and iPod Touch. On something that's supposed to be closer to a netbook or laptop? It will leave huge, gaping holes in websites. I hope you don't care about streaming video! God knows not many casual internet users do. Oh wait, nevermind, they all do.
Adapters, Adapters, Adapters
So much for those smooth lines. If you want to plug anything into this, such as a digital camera, you need all sorts of ugly adapters. You need an adapter for USB for god's sake.
Update: Why stop at 8? Here are more things we are discovering that suck about the iPad.
It's Not Widescreen
Widescreen movies look lousy on this thing thanks to its 4:3 screen, according to Blam, who checked out some of Star Trek on one. It's like owning a 4:3 TV all over again!
Doesn't Support T-Mobile 3G
Sure, it's "unlocked." But it won't work on T-Mobile, and it uses microSIMs that literally no one else uses.
A Closed App Ecosystem
The iPad only runs apps from the App Store. The same App Store that is notorious for banning apps for no real reason, such as Google Voice. Sure, netbooks might not have touchscreens, but you can install whatever software you'd like on them. Want to run a different browser on your iPad? Too bad!

That said, who knows I may get one some day just because I can and I'm mad balla like dat! Not because it fills a void in my life but just cause. Which doesn't bode well for this device for normal users but as a gadget lover I could see myself impulsively buying one.

Apparently you can use this as a digital picture frame which the display on this would make a great one. So if you're in the market for one then this might interest you.

As I thought, it is powered by a "system-on-a-chip" cellphone CPU: http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/28/a...p-a-la-tegra-2
While it looks like it uses a core similar to the one in the Tegra 2, it can only output video at 576i whereas Tegra 2 can do 1080p. I don't know how many people hook up their mobile devices to their HDTVs, but if you do, it's something to consider. It'll be fine for browsing the web and reading a book, but it's not as powerful as most netbooks out there.

I found someone had posted the event on Youtube and watched a little of it. I made it less than halfway through because I began to get really uncomfortable. There was little to no spontaneous applause and I got a feeling of "yeah ok, what else" from the audience.
Apparently the letdown was pretty immediate.

You didn't have to watch on YouTube, there was a link posted from the apple website a page or 2 back..
There was also a live feed.
