Any body who watches sci fi, can see exactly what this device is the beginning of......everyone running around with a datapad.

Welcome to the beginning, the iphone was just the start.

I can't wait for Scotty to beam me up then...

Okay, my sarcasm aside in this thread, I'll say this: Why the eff would I buy this overrated hype-machine if I can get something by Acer (gasp!!!) for the same price with an 7-8 hour battery with way more features...?

Here, I'll answer that for you: Where's my Kool-Aid?

So because Captain Picard sits around with a PADD when he has a laptop two feet from him on his desktop..

I see where this is going.

BRB, going to invest in spandex and seatbelts for space ships..

If I could tether my 1DmkIIn to the iPad, then I'm in for one.

Its also the the software and apps that will make or break this device. Apps like apples NYT app....now you can read a newspaper how YOU want, customize it to your desires.

Its on the developers shoulders to make the thing really shine.
Let me put it a different way...

Who "needs" this device?

I don't say need in the existential sense of the word, I mean it in the same way we all need a cell phone, or a desktop/laptop. Who, other than those with disposable income and not very tech savy, is going to go out and get this?

Who NEEDS a kindle? Who NEEDS any of the other tablets announced at CES.

Since when was consumerism about NEEDS? Its about getting buyers to spend money.

If Adobe made a high performing lightroom app, and there is way to shoot in the field and get my photos directly to the pad....I'd sell my laptop.

One more thing about the stock price (because I knew this would come up). You can't just look at Apple only... it's actually up the least among the competitors:

Motorola: +2.84%
RIMM (Blackberry's company): +2.59%
Palm: +2.42%
Nokia: +1.58%
Apple: +0.84%

[edit]: Cell phone competitors anyway... I don't even think of Apple as a computer company anymore! How times have changed.

What I want to know is:
1) iWork: how do you create a presentation without being able to multitask? Do I need to save my work and close the app every time I need to look something up online or in my email?
2) Why the hell does it cost $130 to add a cellular radio to the device?
3) Why no USB input?

The only "revolution and magic" I see here is they've managed to put a bigger screen on an iPod. A netbook is way more practical and a fraction of the cost. This thing will be slow as balls by comparison to a Pinetrail netbook, but I guess if you can only do one thing at a time, it's not a big deal.

I can fit thousands of PDF's and books on a Kindle, the battery lasts two weeks of actual use in between charges

The revolutionary aspect is portability and battery life.

With the iPad I just don't see it. Newton 2.0

As for 3G pricing...the extra price to get 3G sucks. The fact there is no contract, stomachable.
If you are going to bring a "revolutionary" product to market...it better be.
This is not.

A notebook is better.

The only thing is the shape/interface.....and yet it's not that "new"...it's a larger iPhone.

....and if Gen2 is the "one to get"....it better be a BIG change.

I see low volume sales for the iPad.

Really? You have intimate working knowledge of apples new in house processor?

Yea, of course, hence the second part of my post.

Last time I checked, tablets are not big sellers, especially non-keyboard tablets.

I'm not saying this device won't sell. I'm saying it's not a very useful device. I was hoping it was going to be more powerful. Have an OSX based OS. USB ports, ect. But it's not, it's poor in functionality, it's a larger app launcher.

The kindle uses FAR less power than the pad. And I'd be the first one to tell even Apple can defy the issue of battery vs. technology vs. cost. Its a big drawback, but hey, they are trying.

yes, and you'd want to run a Lightroom app and copy/process 15MB (or whatever) RAW files on a device which has a 1GHz processor...

Too expensive as an eReader, its not good for games nor can it multitask like a laptop.

Its a toy.
An expensive toy, that isn't even as good for games as an itouch/phone

The only places I have seen tablets gain any real traction is in Point of Sale, Inventory/Warehouse Management, Automotive Service Departments and Medical Record/Patient Interaction scenarios.

I just don't see this usurping any of those duties, due mainly to the lack of processing power and multitasking. As an aside, is there a Citrix client for Apple devices?

Like I said, it doesn't matter if you can only do one thing at a time. I'd be very surprised if Apple's first crack at an ULV 1GHz cellphone processor is better than Intel's dualcore pinetrail chip.

I'm very unimpressed with this. I was hoping for a tablet style computer, and this is nowhere near that. It's basically something that runs apps, and only runs them one at a time. Would it really have killed them to put multitasking ability into this? You know, maybe it would have.
This new processor might be lightening fast, as long as it's only running one app at a time.

If I could have replaced my laptop with this, or used it in addition to my laptop, i.e., add it to a home network, then maybe I would have considered one.

Unless they're holding back on some very cool features, I just don't see this thing flying off the shelves.

Palm should make a tablet version of the Pre.

Multitasking + GPU + Flash support > iMaxi

Everything I'm reading is saying it's very fast, but I can't figure out why they'd waste that power by only letting you do one thing at a time.

All they needed to do to make this a winner is:
1) Put OSX on it with an iPhone OS emulator app.
2) USB port for peripherals/storage
3) Radio included, like every other eBook reader

That would all cost Apple essentially nothing to do and would make it infinitely better.
