^Your own link....

As for the third generation iPad from early 2012, there are definitely regressions in UI fluidity. I upgraded from the iPad 2 to the iPad 3 shortly after its release and even in the days of iOS 5 there were areas where performance was worse than its predecessor due to the memory and GPU requirements of driving such a high resolution display. In our iOS 7 review we remarked that it was surprising how early after its release the iPad 3 got to the point of feeling very slow to use.

It's unfortunate to say this, but that trend hasn't stopped with iOS 8. There are also issues like homescreen icons not rendering when using the four finger app close and swiping to another app page. I don't know if this occurs on the newer iPads but on the iPad 3 the software feels like it's not even finished. Taking all that into account, with the current performance under iOS 7.1 and fact that the iPad 3 is still excluded from features like Handoff and Airdrop, I can't say I recommend that iPad 3 users upgrade to iOS 8 unless they're fully aware of the possible bugs and reduction in smoothness from doing so.
Plus the performance charts after. Like I said, it's negligible, but it's there.

Use vlc media player. Install the app, and you can add movies via iTunes without having to convert them to .mp4

You can even do it without iTunes

Yup you don't even need iTunes. Just open in Chrome (desktop) the IP address that the VLC provides for their wifi transfers and drag and drop. So simpole.

I spent a while looking for the actual VideoLan VLC player and it does not appear on the apps store. The link from VLC webpage ( VideoLAN - VLC for iOS ) says it is not available in the US.

Eff you Steve Jobs for making this difficult. I should be able to move a damn file to the ipad and open it in a damn media player.

Ummm I have it installed on mine........and Miz apparently has it, so you should be able to get it.

N/m just seeing forum posts starting on Sept 14th that it got yanked from the app store again. That sucks hopefully it's back soon.

In the meantime you can use Dragon Player Lite for free and it does the same thing.

Why not just connect it to iTunes and drag and drop it into the iPad? Since it is in MP4 format

Will check out Dragon Player, thanks.

Because I would need to install and set up itunes on her laptop, perform a sync, move the movies over... and that's just stupid. Times like this make me remember why I prefer the 'other' OS...

She's just trying to watch something right? Just load it to drop box and watch it that way.

it just irks me that all these apps to do basic things on the ipad cost money when my nexus can do all this and get all these apps for nothing. Not going to spend $3.99 for an app to play movies. It's the principle.

There are premium features but that shouldn't apply to you.

Play from pc Mac or nas . Or connect to a upnp/dnla server.
Stream more files types over AirPlay and Dolby digital plus support.

Tomorrow I hope to find out when I can throw money at Apple for an iPad Pro.

Only because my old eyes need a bigger screen.
