I was only mildly impressed by the iPhone X when I got the chance to use it, so now I'm considering going back to Android again.

The upcoming S9 is supposed to have a half year of exclusivity with the Snapdragon 845, and rumors are new Samsung batteries will retain much more capacity in the long term compared to the current.

A lot of people love their Samsung devices, but my brother and I have been burned so badly by them that we went to iOS.

Am I dumb? They've already given me two shitty devices. Fool me three times...

You're not dumb, you just have limited choices in the flagship phone. I would wait for the OnePlus 5T and S9 to be out, then weigh the OnePlus, the Essential, the S9, the HTC U11, and iPhone X.

And I agree with you. I find the iPhone X beautiful, but you unlock it and it's the same old iOS except now buggier than ever in iOS 11.

I played with the X also. Apple always made beautiful phones and the X books and looks great. But that iOS software is what sent me to Android. I've had Samsungs since the Note 2 but I only stick with them because insurance and they give me new phones and I'm kind of on the fuck Samsung boat at least once they're 3 mos old. When my S7 Edge craps out I'll be a total free agent but probably try Moto or LG to save $. I don't think I care enough to have top of the line plus I've never paid more than $200 for a phone.

I'd love to be able to argue about that.

But I can't.

I've pretty much gotten to the point I don't notice it unless I look, and FWIW my boss's iPhone X has the same blue shift so whatever. All the upsides of the device greatly take away from the minor issue like this...which is inherent to OLED apparently.

In regards to the half tint, bring up a web page in chrome that has a white background (or the new tab page works best) and slowly tilt the phone on it's long axis away from you (up/down not left/right) and you'll see the partial tint start at the top.

What's going on with the Pixel 2's screen? I know about the blue tint, but apparently some people aren't giving it great reviews.

My brother is die hard Android, he finally went back after a year of being unsatisfied with his iPhone 7+. He has a Pixel 2, haven't gotten a chance to use it yet.

Who gives a shit about blue text bubbles when you can make them all any color you want

Ok so it's the Pixel 2 XL, because the OLED display is being made by LG. I don't know if I can go to a screen smaller than 5.5". My Note 4 was great, except like Doom I was saying "fuck Samsung" after a few months.

Personally I love my Pixel 2 XL. I don't think the issue is way over blown. Heck people are showing blue tint on their iPhoneX screens as well I still give Samsung the advantage in overall hardware design but the software just kills it for me. Stock Android from Google is just so smooth and fluid.

Knock on wood, my Note 8 is performing flawlessly and I push it hard as this is my business work horse.

I think Samsung after Note 7 fiasco, truly worked extra hard to produce a great phone.

Can I ask a dumb question of Android users, please? I hope?

As a fairly new user of an LG V30, I have been able to duplicate (after a hell of a lot of trouble) most of the aspects of the Apple ecosystem that I was missing.

But there's still one thing.

With Apple, you can use SMS and iMessages more or less automatically from any Apple device. MacBook, iMac, iPhone, iPad they all see the same SMS and iMessages and you can respond to any of them from any device.

Is there a way to do that with the Android ecosystem?

I'd need to basically have SMS on an LG V30 replicated on an iMac or MacBook to do what I'm missing.

It's not a stupid question. iMessage is the single biggest cause of lock-in to iOS after app purchases.

There's an app for Android called Pushbullet that works for me. It forwards any notifications you like from your phone and has an iMessage like SMS interface so you can answer on Mac, PC, smoke signals, etc. You can't use the Mac message client, but the pushbullet interface is good and with the free version you can reply to messages from any device. Love it so far, especially because my work machine is a PC so I can answer SMS there.

Thanks very much. I'll look around for that.

I confess there's an iPhone X about to arrive, but if it behaves as badly with Acura Bluetooth as the other iOS 11 devices, it's going straight back and I'll be fine with the V30.

Thanks for your help.

I'm honestly not a fan of that feature. I can get why you'd want it and it's a great business idea for Apple to "trap" people in their eco-system.

I hated how my iPhone friends would go on about their "blue text bubbles" and hated getting green ones.

I myself missed Textra on Android, being able to make ALL text bubbles and even the background whatever color I wanted.

The two big differences with iMessages that attract many of us are (1)an ability to send to large groups immediately and (2)the ability to attach certain types of secure files without having to tell people to retrieve email.

The 10-person limit on SMS is annoying once you've used iMessages for a while.

:-)

Ten people

I've never been in a group chat of more than eight or nine people. But even then, not all of them were iPhone users.

Now I know. I do admit that group messaging on iOS is generally less chaotic. Usually when a group chat gets separated strangely, there's a non iPhone user involved.

If I am in a group chat with 10 people, it's involuntary and I immediately find myself wanting to leave said group chat.

I despise group messages. I would pay for an app that allowed me to disconnect from them without having to block each other member. Why this is not baked into the protocol is beyond me...

At one my jobs, you're not allowed anything other than an iPhone, which people believe they can secure better, whether it's true or not. (If I end up sending the iPhone X back, I'll need a company phone with my V30.)

One of these huge messages is used to call to the post in an urgent situation, when you need for people to show up like RIGHT NOW.

It works.

I'm having a hard time with email and how to coordinate all of the different addresses. The iPhone is just better at that, I believe.

For example, if there is a way in Android to keep all unread email at the top, I have still not discovered it.

Other than that, I'm having a blast. :-)

Google seems to want to dominate your email and calendars, whereas Apple seems to allow a little flexibility.

Which mail client are you using and which mail service are you using?

For example, I use GMAIL for my personal service and the Inbox app. I have Outlook installed as well specifically for work email. It's really nice having them separate.

Gmail application.

Two factor authentication was fine with iCloud...or at least it *looked* like it was fine, and then Google Mail and iCloud seemed to start a fight with each other.

Apple mail just didn't go where it should have gone, and I'm damned if I understand all the weird folders that were created on the phone.

With Aol, I just set up Google Mail to poll the Aol server. That's working fine.

There's also an Aol application that works fine by itself for Aol mail.

It's just Google and Apple that don't seem to get along.

Apple authentication appeared to work for the V30's Gmail application, but it does not work for the Web interface for Google. I thought perhaps I could get Google to poll the Apple mail, but that doesn't seem to work.

I'll figure it out one day.

For the time being, I'm just not going to be looking at Apple mail on the V30.

As far as app compatibility goes, it seems like Apple gets the most priority. Understandably, because their OS gets timely updates and they have a huge userbase compared to Samsung, LG, etc

Even Google's apps would receive updates on iOS before they hit any Android devices. Hangouts is one that comes to mind.

That said, I feel flexibility is much better on Android. iOS is comparatively limited, and doesn't allow you to choose default apps. This annoys me on an almost daily basis. With any of my Android devices, Spotify would auto play any music I had, links to addresses would always open in Waze, etc.

I'm amazed at the customizations that are available in the operating system, and that's before you get into developer options, the service menu and engineering menu.

Even before you start digging deep, you could really screw up your device before you realize you've done it. :-)

I've wondered whether my email issue is related to something that I did, but I don't think so.

Apple mail and AOL mail just stop working sometimes...no explanation.

I can forward Apple mail to Google, and get Google to poll AOL mail, but then all my iMAP folders are screwed up.

It's a great device...but I really need to be able to get AOL and Apple mail!

It might be worth a try. I use the native Samsung email app on my Note 3 (old and, well .. Samsung)
and even it has a "Sort By: Read/Unread" option - which works against an individual email account
or across all email accounts. I use it to sift about 15 accounts.

Maybe poking around in the V30 native app will pay dividends?
