Android: Phone News and Discussion Thread

The goal would be to move to a more standard experience across all devices. Yes, I know the theme to this point has been customization, but that can be done without the manufacturers sticking their nose into it. I want the power button, the drop-down menu, the lockscreen...to be the same no matter which device I pick up. TW is the most alien Android experience out there, and it isn't a good thing.

His contacts as long as they are stored on his gmail account should transfer just fine as should his installed apps.
His SMS he will need to find an app that allows you to backup and then restore your SMS. Make a backup on his Note2 and then install the app on his Nexus6 and then do a restore. There are a bunch of free apps in the playstore to do this.

If his contacts aren't saved in his google account is there a way to move them there on the phone?

Apparently his contacts aren't stored on his google account. He said only his contacts from facebook where in his new phone. He had a Galaxy S2 not the Note 2, does that matter?

Your friend can export his contacts from his S2. The exported file will most likely be saved on the phone. I'd then email that file to my Google email. The file will probably be a vcf. Then have him go to his Google account on his computer and download that vcf file that he just emailed to himself. Then go to Contact and import that vcf file. Then he can log onto his Google Account on his Nexus 6 and the contact list will be synced.

Does TW actually make things better? Are the guys working on TW better at design than Matias Duarte? Or are they just putting their spin on it solely to differentiate themselves from other Android brands?

Because when you have skins, the performance of certain apps, widgets or other features change. One that I'm personally familiar with is Dashclock. Because TW and Sense have their own lockscreen protocols, Dashclock worked differently. It didn't work at all as intended on Sense, and I loved the hell out of that skin.

And again I'm not arguing TW>Pure etc. I ask because I don't know and I hope that pure would take the good things from TW, Sense, etc. These are things I think are not on pure that TW has. Does pure have a camera button on the lock screen? Does it make cool effects when you unlock the screen like the Note 4 (Note 4 owners know what I mean)? panoramic selfie camera (fun to use with kids and gf)? When someone calls and your phone is ringing on your screen it will show the last time you spoke and duration?

As with all OSes, touchwiz/sense/ROMS/etc some people like the changes, some don't. I've rooted and used xposed/Wanam to modify some stuff in the OS that I like - like the power button menu list, and network speed in the status bar.
Hey man, whatz up?

So after using the OnePlus One for just a day, I can no longer go back to screens smaller than 5 inches. Holding my N4 again felt tiny. I love the larger screen. Browsing is ridiculously more easier and enjoyable for me.

Matias has really contributed to a lot of things I love, especially webOS (RIP) and fortunately a lot of the ideas carried over to Android.

I'll add that I also like to get the latest and greatest iteration of the OS, to play with the new features. Samsung doesn't update their devices often, so their phones can feel a little left out when it comes to new innovations (granted they have some nice things themselves). Even Nexus 4 gets lollipop.
It really all comes down to preference as well.
When is that thing going to get lollipop? It is an interesting phone, for sure.

^that's what I can't stand the fact that TW adds little if anything to the OS, arguably does more harm than good and because of TW or other UI skins OEMs delay rollout of updates and cool new features so that their software that I don't want can run on it. Fuck that!

This guy loves Touch Wiz though
I wouldn't call myself a power user but the Note 4 is my first non-vanilla Android UI ever. I had an OG iPhone, then a 3GS. It quickly became apparent that it was beginning to look like the same old shit over and over, hence the jump.
UI-wise, my rooted GNex was really nice. I went to the 2013 Moto X which was very similar in shape, build, UI, etc. but only used a different launcher and keyboard. Then I wanted something different again.
I really like the design of the N4. I take a ton of photos and while the N6 camera is a huge improvement, the extra features of the N4/TW win out for me. I didn't touch the S Pen at first but now I use it all the time. Same with multi window.

I spent some good time with an iPhone 6, 6+, and compared the Nexus 6 side-by-side Note 4 at a store. I wanted a "phablet". Lollipop is pretty to look at. I really like the animations. But I found myself putting down the N6 to play with the N4. To each his own. Google's apps have already taken on the 5.0 appearance anyway.
I originally swore off of Samsung phones (and Verizon) after the awful time I had with my GNex and seeing how poorly my friends' T-mobile GS3s held up. TW was slow as shit on their phones.
The N4 fixes two complaints I had with Samsung. All plastic construction and the lack of a Qualcomm chip. There was no lag with the N4's TW other than the "recents" button, but once I turned off S-voice it went away.
The only thing I really feel I'm missing out on is dual front facing speakers. For what they are, the One M8 and N6 sound so good.

Finally decided on a design for the Moto X and placed my order this morning - white/ebony/silver trim 32gb pure edition. I should have it 12/16. I'm hoping it's sooner than that.
BTW - I have another $140 off code if anyone wants it. I figured I'd give you guys dibs on it before unleashing it on XDA.

So I have not rooted an Android device since I put Android on my Touchpad. I have not rooted any phones. My main question is if I root does that mean I will not get updates when they come out anymore? I want to get wifi tethering on my N6 but don't want to have to manually update all the time because of root.

you're in IT. it means basically the same.
you will gain root access.
that is all.
when you start to modify or tinker with kernals and roms is when things get hairy.
so, by unlocking boot loader and rooting, you're just gaining access, no change to software.

Nice choice. A bit plain though
I still really appreciate Motorola offering the ability to customize the phone. That way you can really have something unique.

I forgot who it was that recommended Textra. But I've been using it and it's a damn solid replacement for the stock SMS app. Much better MMS support as well.
Moderator
It's solid as well. But I didn't like how it mixed my Gmail contacts with my "phone" contacts. It was at time confusing because I once accidently messaged my friend's Gmail account instead of his phone. He didn't receive my message until he realized I messaged him on Gmail.

I probably recommended you Textra since I've raved about it for months. With the latest update they finally allowed future texting. I officially don't need the stock messaing app.

What's future texting?

Just a heads up for Chromecast users, you can now redeem the original X-Men movie for free. Just download the Chromecast app to your device, connect to your chromecast and then Check Offers. You can only redeem it once.

The free google play and Hulu plus is only for new Chromecast users or all? I have had mine since it came out.

Google Play blows
Needs more Lemon Pledge
OK, textra users...
convince me!
What makes it so much better than stock for basic texting?
If I use it and decide to go back to stock, will I lose all the SMS it contains or can I run them side by side?

I like that it looks more elegant and intuitive. Basically it has the iPhone look and feel to it with a bunch of color customization you can do. I like the chat bubble layout instead of the horizontal bar layout of the stock SMS app. It's easier to distinguish your text from the other person. I also like how right after I reply a text from the lock screen, I'm taken back to the lockscreen and just put the phone down. This is useful for me when I'm at my desk and do quick replies and just put the phone down.
Also, I believe text messages are not app specific. Meaning the messages from Textra are seen on my stock SMS app. MMS doesn't seem to sync with the old SMS app though.

All the SMS that you get in Textra save to stock Messages. When you delete them in Textra they also get deleted in stock. I think we've said here a million times while its better but the short answer: faster, quick reply so you don't have to leave the app, you can use iPhone emojis with anyone with the free plug-in, set contacts notifications including tone, blinking light color (if applicable to your phone), bubble colors.
