Android: Phone News and Discussion Thread
A lot of people are forgetting that the Nexus devices are primarily a dev phone and everything else is secondary. It was never meant to cater to the mainstream and sell out which is why it lacks certain features. I think a lot of people are missing this very important point and then compare it to the iPhone and other hardware devices without understanding its real purpose. LTE is still in its infancy for a bunch of networks and probably won't have the same coverage 3G/HSPA+ does until early 2014. Its nice to have but at the moment, if you don't live in the major markets and care about battery life, its not a big deal.
Anyways
@speedemon90: IMO the specs of the Nexus 4 will last you a long long time (minus the storage space). Plain and simple: Quad core on a mobile device is overkill right now - it was overkill in my Transformer Prime tablet (when I got it early in 2012) since most apps weren't even optimized to run on all cores, although quad core functionality is growing rapidly on android.
I'm interested in seeing the battery consumption in everyday use though - a large screen + quad core likely wont be too friendly on the battery, add LTE to that (which Google didn't in the Nexus 4) and it's even worse. That's my one big fear about the Note 2.
My only gripe with the Nexus 4 is storage space. With apps becoming more "high def" and graphics intensive, IMHO, 16gb should've been standard, with an option for 32gb. I understand why Google did it this way, but for those who use their phones for media purposes (i.e. playing games and watching/recording tons of videos) being limited to 16gb kind of sucks.

If you really want LTE, there's the Optimus G but it sure won't be as close in price to the Nexus and probably not as supported due to the locked bootloader. Otherwise, its the same phone.

Google wants there nexus phones to have no constraints. Verizon showed they can't do that and google doesnt have the sales volume with the nexus to tell verizon to shut up.
Att and google would be fine, but again ATT doesnt have a whole lot of LTE markets and google would make this phone for thousands customers and then would have to up the price on all the phones so it can carry both radios affecting the hopefully millions worldwide sales.
So google will lose those thousand on ATT. But gain more elsewhere.
Thats why they didnt put LTE...

on another note i hope the wireless charging orb they built doesnt cost a fortune. I'd really want that because it looks sooo nice hahaha
also theres a cool feature in 4.2 when your phone is docked to a wireless charger

The other major feature Google borrowed from Palm is a feature in Android 4.2 called "Daydream." It displays photos, news from Google Currents, or other information when the phone is docked. That same feature was available on webOS, then called Exhibition. Whatever the source of ideas may be, it will make the Nexus 4 a little more useful as it's charging on your desk.
But you're still missing the point of this Nexus which is accessibility via price. Where can you get a phone this feature packed with LTE at this price unlocked and brand new?

main reason LTE isnt on google phone is because they would make this phone which would be more expensive and have a ltl less battery life. Thats only available in 77 cities/markets in the USA.

ok so I have a problem....when I sync my galaxy note with Kies, I cant see any of the images which I have synced
If i copy them on the SD card either via the phone or a SD card reader, same problem....I even tried using different syncing apps and still nothing....a little help here

That cool new feature you are talking about is called Daydream, but it really is just Matias' Palm-- Exhibition. I have it on my Touchpad and it is nice
Google Announces Android 4.2...
http://www.xda-developers.com/androi...and-much-more/
Nice upgrades. Maybe HTC will just skip the jellybean upgrade on the One X/EVO line and upgrade Sense to work with 4.2. As you HTC phone owners know our phones cant be upgraded with a Sense version of an Android rom until the Sense UI is compatible.
What do you guys think about Android 4.2?

For what it's worth, the original Palm Pre Touchstone retailed at $49.99 when it came out. Then again HP mishandled Palm, so that price would be the highest Google would charge for it, I'm guessing.

I hope the wireless dock is cheap as well. Or if we could substitute it for the Palm Touchstone. Probably could if the amps and voltage match up. I'm sure the guys at xda will cook something up if it ends up being too expensive. One of the android devs mentioned that they would be selling bumper cases as well. Let's hope they don't get sued over a bumper case.

Its because Kies sucks. Lol. But to answer your question, are the pictures not showing in Explorer in Lies or on the phoneI If its in explorer in Windows, and maybe even the phone it may be because the media scanner didn't run through to pop up the images. A restart of the phone should initiate Mediascanner or a simple mount/unmount of the USB storage will do it. There is also an app but I believe it requires root. If you're not seeing it on the phone, you can verify its there by running a file explorer app.
The images copy over fine but I cant open them on the phone. It says "file too big or corrupted"...so even if I take some images from the camera and then copy those over to a folder on my laptop and sync the folder over, i cant even see those images....
syncing is badddd with Samsungs
^Yeah Kies just sucks hard. Just manually sync your stuff by mounting/unmounting the USB storage.
TheVerge does some great videos and probably why Google tapped them to cover the new Nexus line yesterday. Here's the one they did on Google Now and a little more info to what its trying to achieve:

Daydream was available since ICS but Google didn't turn it on by default. CM9 enabled the feature and you could customize it to go through whatever pictures you felt like.

I'll wait to see what options the well-known case companies come up with like Otterbox, Rearth, etc...

^^^ I think they are in process of doing so, slowly....
with IOS6, you have to reinstall youtube as Google has removed that from being a built in app in Apple
. Also the maps are now Apple maps....
i think with the next release Apple will be on its own

Android 4.2 Keyboard with Gesture Typing is up for download:

You will need Root to install. Will try this on my Nexus later.

Otherwise, I'm glad that the stock Android Keyboard will finally be getting swype.
I run CM10 (on the S3) and AOKP (on the One X) and using third party keyboards (Swiftkey and Swype) always creates a very slight delay in certain apps.

Ok, so I've only played with it for two minutes, but as someone who's been using swype for the past 2 years or so:
The 4.2 Keyboard swype function is the best iteration I've ever seen. Having the word you're typing actually show on your swyping finger is ingenious.

flashed the new 4.2 keyboard. I can tell right away this isnt the final build cause when swyping the letters the word that follows your trace isnt in a box and looks rather ugly haha.
But the transition between swype and regular typing is flawless. I used to like swype for one handed typing in class. But i can type faster with two hands so when i wanted that, the swype keyboard sucked real bad on that. This is cool! I'm just gonna disable that pop up for now.

I can see it now.......... throwing my Nexus 4 on that Nokia Charging Pillow every night before bed. Next to my bed. mmm hmmm lol
I was gonna wait til I got home to try out the keyboard but I just went ahead and manually installed it. So far I have to say its amazing. I haven't used Swype in a while but I never got on their bandwagon because their word prediction and autocorrection wasn't the greatest. Gesture typing is good so far and I like the visualization even though its not the final build. Google needs to drop 4.2 to AOSP already so we can get custom ROMs. Lol.

One thing I've noticed that's different from Swype's implementation is that you don't have to loop letters if they're right after the other. It seems the keyboard is context aware and actually predicting the next word based on what you're typing out. Its almost like the mash up of SwiftKey and Swype that SwiftKey was going to release soon. I wonder if it learns your phrases like SwiftKey does. Maybe that's the one up SwiftKey will have.
haha you guys are right, its better with the pop up following it... i put it back.
Good thing you got it now. Google asked AP to take down the APK/zip files for 4.2
good thing we acted quickly!

note to civicdrivr, a lot of first impressions on the device really like the hardware and build quality on this phone. It feels like a high end phone with not cheap plastic bits aka samsungs back haha.
Also i'm just realizing I'm coming from a NS to a N4. 512mb Ram to 2gb. 1ghz single core to some clock speed quad core
I'M EXCITED!!!!!!!

Oh man I really wish they had a 32 GB version. 16 is really pushing if it based on the ways I like to set up my devices. Currently have a 64GB iPhone 4S and have well over half the space used up. I know I could adjust my workflow/ way of doing things to make 16 work, but I'd rather not have to do that, ya know? I know I don't need to get this device but was really hoping this would be the perfect phone for me
FYI, I am currently testing the beta of the new NEW SwiftKey and ..... this video speaks for itself:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA5Horw_SOE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA5Horw_SOE
be in their VIP program. I got in it a long time ago when it was all exclusive, but now they open it up to people every now and then, so just keep an eye out I guess.
Only bad thing about beta testing Swiftkey is that you have to make it rescan all your data again because you cannot port over the already saved predictions.
or...... just look online for someone to post the beta's apk.
