4200 RPM laptop

I was just wondering I saw that a lot of drives that are for laptops are 4200 RPM. Will this drive run slow as hell?

Yes that is why laptops are not meant to be desktop PC replacements. If you want speed and dont really need portability then you need to get a desktop.

They are at 4200RPM (some have 5400RPM) maily due to battery life. The higher the RPM the higher the power drain. Although there are a few "desktop Replacement" laptops out there but they are $$ and usually quicte large.

Basically with a laptop you need to sacrifice performance for portability.

My Laptop is pretty quick, and I wondering if a drop to 4200 RPM would it make a difference. I am making a mini itx system and need a hard drive and dvd/cd-rw drive

There are even 7200 rpm laptop drives, as you can guess the battery life is short.

I cant wait until flash hard drives for laptops come out

Once they get to 20 gb and above they will basically wipe out moving parts hard drives no more worries of shit breaking from being dropped or moved.

Is there a noticable enough difference between 4200 rpm and 5400 rpm? I was making a mini itx before and got rid of it because I didn't know what I was doing, but now I know and have a list of all the parts and just wondered if paying extra for 5400 is worth it when it won't be running toooo complex of progams...just mostly music and other media.

BTW was going to buy a mac mini but couldnt bring myself to paying $500 for something with only 256mb memory when I can build one for a hundred less with 2 times the memory...unless there is something I am missing about the mac mini.

To me there is a noticeable difference between the two speeds. But I work with a lot of data, so RAM and hard drive speeds are crucial. I'm guessing for the average user who is doing word processing and web browsing, 4200 would be fine.

actually the hitachi 7200rpm drive has lower power consumption than most 5400rpm drives, made it an easy choice to replace the stock 5400rpm drive in my tabletpc with

I used 5400rpm drives on my blade servers, but not too bad. I don't use anything that is too i/o intensive on my laptops. I have burnt my MB trying to crack my passwords.

I have a 4200 rpm drive in one machine and a 5400 drive in another. Both laptops are fairly new and are used for work on the go. Opening/saving large photoshop files on the 5400 rpm system is a bit faster. Both systems are custom buil smilar specs.
