You have to use an external installer (CD or USB) to wipe the drive.

You can't wipe the drive locally....it kinda goes against itself in that nature.

Are you avoiding someone finding you personal information on the drive?

Your best option is replacing the HDD and destroying the old one.

When did you buy it? If it is the fall iteration (or even mid-summer 2011), I believe you can only do a reinstall over the Internet as Apple stopped shipping reinstall discs for Lion on the 2011. But if yours came with Snow Leopard, here is what you do. Insert the Mac OS X installer disc that you got with the MacBook Pro. Then shut it down. Before you press the power button to turn it back on, hold down the Option key, then press power. Don't let go of Option until multiple start-up items have shown up on the screen. When the disc shows up, use the arrow keys to highlight it and press enter. Once that loads, click Utilities on the top menu bar and select Disk Utility. From there, you can select your volume and select Erase to clear it. Then quit Disk Utility and continue reinstalling OS X.
