When is a catch not a catch? When it happens in the NFL, apparently.
Officials overturned what should have been a game-winning touchdown by Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson(notes) on Sunday due to a preposterous, counter-intuitive rule that says a catch is only a catch in the NFL if the "process" of said catch is complete. Confused? Don't worry, so is the rest of America.
Johnson had made a one-handed grab with 31 seconds left in the game that would have given the Lions a late lead over the Chicago Bears. But as he fell to the ground, he braced himself with the ball, which then popped out of his hand. Because of this, and despite the fact that Johnson had gotten two feet and a tailbone down in the end zone, the pass was ruled incomplete. A replay review upheld the decision.
"The runner did not complete the catch in the process of the catch?" Leave it to the NFL to make the simple concept of catching a ball as convoluted as Senate procedure for filibustering.
Don't blame the refs for this one. They made the correct decision as dictated by the rule book. The fault lies with the rule itself. Why do there have to be so many conditions to a catch? Toddlers know when a ball is caught and when it isn't. Aside from getting two feet in, what more does the NFL want people to do? Should Calvin Johnson have brought the ball with him to the sideline? Should he hold it for the flight home? Take it to dinner? When does the process of a catch end?
This is like the infamous "tuck rule". It goes against all logic. We know when a ball is fumbled and we know when a ball is caught. This ball was caught. The Detroit Lions should have taken the lead on the Bears and been in a position to win its first road game in nearly three years.
Instead we're left with another rule controversy in the NFL. And it's only week one.

I'm sick of such controversial calls, and to have a huge one (for the Lions at least) happen so early in the season is a joke. I vote the Lions destroy Chicago at home this season.

Wow Cowboys - Redskins game is a comedy of errors. How bout that end of 2nd qtr play? Man I don't think High School teams do that.
Glad to see Donovan playing well. Cowboys are looking horrendous.

Funny I'm watching McNabb throw to his receivers and it's eerily similar to his career in Philly. Lots of dropped balls, over/underthrown. I never felt Donovan had touch - every pass was gunned 100 mph. If you weren't directly in front of the ball, it was an adventure trying to catch one of his rocket passes.

Fuck.
Where is Alex Smith's accuracy. I wouldn't blame him if his timing was off with Crabtree or Davis since he didn't have much preseason practice with them, but holy shit man, we should be up at LEAST a couple of TDs. He's off on nearly every throw where he isn't getting flushed out of the pocket.

Edit: I just saw highlights.
Cowboys lose....barely. And I'm glad it was at the hands of the Redskins. Welcome back Shanahan.

God my Fins won but looked like ass. However Brandon Marshall and Chad Henne are creating a nice rapport. He made some nice catches but dropped a bomb that was underthrown. Plus Marshall rocked this one DB on a block. Other than the secondary blowing the long TD (to Roscoe instead of Evans ) our D looked pretty good. Then again it was Buffalo who will stink. CJ Spiller didn't do shit.

That Eagles/Packers game was pretty good, too bad it was blacked out or I couldn't find it on TV.
Sucks for Calvin Johnson.... one of my favorite receivers. I'm thinking now coaches are going to make their receivers cradle the ball like a baby so even after a catch with both feet down, they gotta hold on to it for dear life.

Now if only Lovie Smith can be convinced to kick a field goal from fourth and goal at the one.
