Adam Lind is tearing shit up. Vernon is hot. Aaron Hill is scoring and getting RBIs. It's a shame they lost Marcum for a long time. That team definitely has potential.

I'm not sold on Delmon Young either. He has no plate discipline whatsoever. Any pitcher who ever throws him a strike is an idiot. Foul, foul, foul, foul, foul, swing-and-a-miss. If Crede gets two strikes on him, he's done too.

Well....I saw a lot of firsts today.
First real game at Citifield - Mets vs Padres.
First pitch - Strike by Mike Pelfrey. 92 mph Fastball.
First hit - 3rd pitch of the game. Homerun by Jody Gerut
First out - Brian Giles pop out to Jose Reyes.
First home hit - Double by David Wright.
First home run scored - Brian Schneider
First home RBI - Luis Castillo
First home homerun - 3 run shot by David Wright
And unfortunately the first loss by the METS at Citifield.

The Giants do two things: they make mediocre pitchers look like the second coming of Christy Matthewson and make run-of-the-mill hitters look like Albert Pujols.Yes, I'm a die-hard Giants fan.

I think the biggest thing about batting in different spots in the lineup at the ML level is that the approach changes. A leadoff guy has to think in terms of getting on base, and that involves being willing to take pitches and take a walk, which a lot of guys have trouble doing. That's one reason it can be argued that, as good a hitter as he is, Ichiro Suzuki is not a great leadoff hitter. He just won't talk walks, and his on base percentage suffers for it (most of the times). The M's have been trying for years to get him to take more pitches.
Batting third means the opposite in a lot of ways. You have to be aggressive about swinging the bat, and your focus is going to be getting hits and driving in runs, and getting on base to set the table for the cleanup guy. Same with batting cleanup, with an ever greater emphasis on driving the ball out of the ballpark.
There are definite differences. And playing ball in a softball league is not going to give you that perspective.

Um I played baseball too. Probably would've got drafted somewhere if I wouldn't have got hurt.

What I meant is that with softball I don't think it does apply, at least in slow pitch. If you are talking fast pitch, then that's another story. IMO, you don't really get that specialization, or even need it, until you get to the higher more competitive levels of baseball (say good high school or even Babe Ruth or something like that; anything well organized with skilled players). In most softball leagues, it's just dig in and swing from the heels. Lineups tend to be more stacked in SB also, because, frankly, it's just easier to hit in that sport.And kudos to you for your baseball experience. You played college ball?

That's cool you got to see the first game at the new park Ravi. I caught some of the game on TV, and it looks like a real beauty. Refreshing to see them build a pitchers park for once, as opposed the other band box parks that have gone up in recent years.

I saw many a game at run down Shea. I will definitely miss the crappy park. But I'm looking forward to seeing what $800+ Million can get you.

That said, the new park is pretty damn nice and the amenities are hard to beat. One of my favorite features of all the new parks is that you can see the game from anywhere on the main concourse. Very cool and a lot more intimate than the old cookie-cutter multi purpose stadiums.
The Mets and Pads are on TV here again tonight.

Kinsler beat all those other teams by himself.And while I'm at it, let's not do an everybody wears 42 day next year. It's impossible to figure out what's going on. I heard the TB announcer kept saying, "And here's Rivera warming up for the Yankees AGAIN. That's like four times this game...."

Of course they did.
I like Kinsler and Young, and of course Hamilton is talented and all that. I just don't think this lineup is that solid top to bottom.
By the way, I probably could have gone 6 for 6 against Mark Hendrickson.

I've seen Nelson Cruz play a number of times in the minors, and that guy has prodigious power. I think I've seen him hit 5 homers, and all them were just bombs. I don't know if it'll carry over to the bigs, but he can drive the ball.
