Colin Fraser on Brad Doty going to the White House and meeting the President:

One of the many perks that comes with a Stanley Cup victory is a trip to the White House, where the winning team gets to meet the President of the United States.
It’s a tradition that’s believed to have been started when Ronald Reagan hosted the New York Islanders in 1983.

Yet, for center Colin Fraser, who has won the Cup twice in the past three years, today will be his first trip to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Just two weeks after claiming the NHL’s top prize with the Blackhawks in 2010, Chicago traded him to the Edmonton Oilers for a draft pick.

This time around, he’s not only going to D.C., he plans on soaking in as much of it as possible.

“It’s one of those cool things that I think everyone wants to do,” Fraser told MayorsManor. “It’s also one of the lucky things that comes with winning.”

The 28-year old Canadian also has a few concerns about some of the guys he’s going with.

“Dewey probably doesn’t know who the President is,” Fraser said of defenseman Drew Doughty. “I bet you he doesn’t even know who the Prime Minister is either.”

As we started to talk about possible questions his teammates might ask President Obama, you could almost see the wheels turning in Fraser’s head.

“I don’t know what Dewey’s gonna ask him. Hopefully he keeps it classy though.”

Oh that Brad Doty!!

Hopefully the Avs can win the first pick in the draft cause they certainly can't win a game right now.

Also hope Sacco gets fired. He is a terrible coach.

Systems Analyst: Oduya, Hjalmarsson, and the cost of missed assignments

Backhand Shelf has a cool occasional feature where Justin Bourne breaks down plays in detail to figure out what went right and what went wrong.

Cool stuff for the hockey aficionado, geek, player, & casual fan.

http://blogs.thescore.com/nhl/2013/0...t-d-zone-draw/

Some great quotes:

"How crazy is it that things have already fallen apart here for Chicago? The puck has been in play for seriously like one second real time. There are plenty of these breakdowns where you get a save and people forget about it, but you’d like to not give teams too many kicks at the can."

"Anyway, Hjalmarsson has no hope of picking up Brown on the other side of the pile, and Williams deserves an award for the amazing volume of space he’s created for his teammate here."

I’m sort of curious about Hjalmarsson’s exact thought process (I think he’s got puck thoughts), but I’m REALLY curious as to why Johnny Oduya is frozen in CPU mode like a video game defender, is taking no one, is doing nothing. Kinda bizarre.

As you can see, Brown is about to reach into the pile, and Hjarlmarsson is screwed behind the pile, AND ODUYA STILL DOESN’T KNOW THE PUCK HAS DROPPED, or something. He probably can’t see the puck through the pile, but I am so, so sure his job is to deal with Williams and at least drift up from where he is. Even if he doesn’t engage Williams, who is engaged with Frolik, it’s tough to explain CPU Oduya.

Also a reminder sponsored by Johnny Oduya that you’re supposed to take Sudafed, not Ambien before the game.

@ CPU Oduya

Clearly, this is only ONE play that completely broke down for the hawks D, and does not represent the whole of the way they play, as their D is typically up to snuff..........but it's nice to see the breakdown of a "breakdown" in detail.

This is the kind of stuff coaches go over with their players when they review video of the games.

Cool stuff indeed

Agostino, a forward, is in his third year at Yale. The 20-year-old, Pittsburgh's fifth-round pick in 2010, had 15 goals and 37 points in 33 games.

The 22-year-old Hanowski is in his fourth year with St. Cloud State. The forward, drafted in the third-round by Pittsburgh in 2009, had 16 goals and 29 points in 34 games.

Both players are currently in the NCAA playoffs with their teams.

Pens going for broke. A lot of change to a lineup that has done nothing but win this year.

Where is he going to play?

According to Bob Mackenzie, a deal was in place with Boston, a better deal for the flames. But Iggy would'nt waive his no trade to go to Boston.

He played on Sid's wing in the olympics, I'm guessing he will go on the line with Kunitz and Crosby, really hate to see that line broken up the way they're playing, but Dupuis can add some depth on the third or fourth line. We are officially stacked.

Clearly Marc-Andre Fleury is the linchpin for a Pens first round exit.

The Pens are taking a page from the old Oilers philosophy:
.....Our overrated sketchy goalie may give up 4, but we should be able to score 6

Yup. Which will make that 1st round exit to the Leaves all the more painful.

I think Iginla saw that choke job Boston pulled against Montreal last night and saw how they couldn't beat the Leaves twice last week and wanted no part of that team.

So many "insiders" looked like asses last night after reporting the Boston deal was done. Lots of apologies by TSN today.

Fleury is not our problem, granted he wasn't the greatest last year in the first round, but he won us a cup, and assuming he's healthy after Gionta pushing Kennedy onto his neck, Fleury has been playing lights out all season, and I've never seen him better. Funny, all this talk about how our D is weak, we strengthen that, and now all the sudden our goalie is the problem

You might be right. But after that playoff performance last year, he'll have to prove himself again in the playoffs to silence all the doubters and critics.

Totally agree, and I have been saying that here, but like I said, up until Gionta f'd up Fleury's day, he was playing out of his mind, now he "needs more evaluation"

He's got a lot to prove.
Regular season versus playoffs are apples and oranges.

...and how much improved is the Pens D?
The Philly series was a defensive nightmare of epic proportions.

How long will Letang be out?

Pens D is far improved as I've said in here already, Martin is finally playing like the 5 million bucks that we pay him to be, we got rid of Michalek who struggled heavily last year, Despres is playing great and getting stronger every game, and we added Eaton who we won a cup with in 09, and Murray, so I'd say the D is plenty improved, especially given they've won 13 in a row against good forechecking teams. The big question mark now is, is Fleury healthy after suffering a blow to the head/neck thanks to a cheap move by Gionta. Up until then, Fleury was 8 and 0 in march

Letang is out 7-10 days

More on Fleury and Letang, Fleury was not scheduled to play tonight, so he may dress as a backup.
The injury news could have been worse for the Penguins.

Still, the team's attempt to break the NHL's all-time record for most consecutive victories will continue against Winnipeg on Thursday without top defenseman Kris Letang and goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

Letang is out seven to 10 days with a broken toe, while Fleury's availability is questionable because of a neck injury.

The news regarding Fleury is not grave. In fact, Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said Wednesday that Fleury could serve as a backup Thursday against the Jets.

Goaltender Tomas Vokoun was scheduled to start against the Jets and will do so as the Penguins attempt to win their 14th consecutive game.

The NHL record for most consecutive wins is 17 and was set 20 years ago by the 1992-93 Penguins.

When Fleury will play again remains uncertain.

“He is continuing to get evaluated,” Bylsma said. “I don't have any more information in that regard. I don't have any information as of yet. He hasn't been ruled out of being the backup as of yet.”

Fleury was injured during the final minute of the second period against Montreal. Canadiens forward Brian Gionta shoved Penguins right wing Tyler Kennedy toward the net. Kennedy's forearm hit Fleury in the head.

Fleury is suffering from neck discomfort but is not believed to have a concussion.

Although Fleury initially appeared to grab to his leg, Bylsma made it clear that the goaltender is only dealing with “an upper-body injury.”

The Penguins were furious following the play. No penalty was called even though Rule 69-1 states that a player should be penalized if he intentionally shoves another player into a goaltender.

Bylsma has mixed feelings about the incident.

“I think if it was reversed, if it was a defending player pushing an offensive player, It gets called a little more,” Bylsma said. “It's not something that's called very often by the referee. Does it happen a handful of times in every game? Probably it does to some degree. It's a hard one to call, a hard one to notice.”

It was fairly easy to notice that Letang wasn't himself upon making his return from a three-game absence. Letang missed the three games earlier this month with a groin injury.

He suffered a broken toe in the first period against the Canadiens. Even though he remained in the game, he did not play with his customary speed. Defenseman Simon Despres has been recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Center Evgeni Malkin could return to the lineup against Winnipeg, but his availability remains uncertain. Malkin skated with the Penguins at Wednesday's practice.

He has skated with the Penguins during each of the team's past eight workouts.

“He continues to be day to day,” Bylsma said.

Note: Defenseman Robert Bortuzzo remains on the Penguins' 23-man roster but has been sent to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for a conditioning assignment. Bortuzzo has not played since the Penguins' last loss, a 4-1 setback at Carolina on Feb. 28. Bylsma said Bortuzzo will return to the team soon and will remain on the roster.

We are on a 13 game winning streak without Malkin and Letang for most of it.

Last I checked, if you score 6 and give up 5 or score 2 and give up 1, you still win.

fleury has a cup...he'll be fine.

This is what happens when you allow a no trade clause, apparently Iggy wanted to play with Sid. Not sure why the ownership would have made a deal with Boston before talking to him though

The Flames management is a complete cluster f*** if you ask me though and they could've avoided this mess. I live in Calgary and I am a season ticket holder (Not sure how much longer) but giving away your Captain and the face of this city for 17 years for basically 3 players that may never see the NHL is an embarassment.

When you do these "No Trade Clause" deals they could have had Iggy sign an amendment in that he gives the choice of teams he wants to go to and then after that is signed the flames have full control of the dealing process.

Ken King (Pres of the Flames) was interviewed yesterday and was doing lots of damage control and tap dancing here in Calgary. When asked if he would do anything different he said exactly what i mentioned above.....with this and the O'reilly fiasco last month in Colorado I wonder how this teams management even dress themselves in the morning. We basically got a bag of pucks and a couple water bottles for an elite player that consistintly gets 30+ goals a season and almost had 50 goals just two years ago.

Iggy is a great all around player that can lead, score, fight and be an all around great person for any team in the league. Many teams in the NHL would have traded for him and placed him as the Captain on their team and instead he maybe a 2nd line player for the Pens.

The Pens have an awesome team this year and you now have the entire city of Calgary behind you guys in the playoffs this year. I hope the fans in Pitt give him the warm welcome he deserves when he steps on the ice sometime next week. (If your wondering, Iggy is having work Visa problems due to the Easter Long weekend and may not be playing till next week).

I can understand why Boston fans are so pissed at the flames being they did agree with their word to the Bruins on a deal (and it was the better deal) but i dont blame Iggy for what he did being the Flames didnt again do their due diligence.

** Sorry for the rant but this city is pissed right now for what we got in return and im curious whats gona happen at tonights game against Columbus. I have a feeling we are going to get killed and any run at the playoffs is now over being Feaster has said other guys are going before next wednesdays deadline.**

Pittsburgh definitely will welcome him, I was hoping to welcome him on Saturday, but word is because of the work visa, he won't dress until Tuesday. Either way, we're glad to have him here. I too was shocked when I heard about the Boston fiasco, sounds like the Flames management handled it extremely poorly

Sorry dude, I know how it feels to have inept management running your hockey team. Between this and the Ryan O'Reily fiasco Feaster should be bagging groceries by June.

The other thing I don't quite get is what the rush was? The trade deadline was 7 days away. Let Pitt sweat it out to increase the offer. Why did the deal have to get done so soon? Apparently those 2 players weren't listed in Pitt's top 15 prospects?!?!?

I guess the only positive was that Boston's offer wasn't a whole lot better than Pittsburghs so it's not like he was completely raped.
