League still hopes to complete Coyotes sale to Jamison

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/...91018K20130201

(Reuters) - The future of the Phoenix Coyotes remained in limbo on Friday after Greg Jamison missed a deadline to purchase the team before the lease agreement he had negotiated with the City of Glendale expired.

Despite another setback in the long-running ownership saga, the National Hockey League (NHL), which owns and operates the team, said in a statement it believes a deal can still be done.

"We remain hopeful the Coyotes sale process will be resolved successfully and we will continue to work with the City of Glendale to move the process forward," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said.

For more than three years, the NHL has been searching to find a buyer for the team they bought out of bankruptcy in 2009 for $140 million.

The league has resisted relocating the franchise but attempts to find a buyer have repeatedly hit roadblocks or fallen through.

Jamison is seen in many quarters as the league's last chance to find someone willing to roll the dice and keep the team in Phoenix, but the former San Jose Sharks CEO could not secure the necessary financing before the arena lease agreement with the City of Glendale expired at midnight on Thursday.

"Today, we were informed by the National Hockey League that Mr. Jamison was unable to close on his purchase of the Coyotes," Coyotes president and COO Mike Nealy said in a statement posted on the team's website on Friday.

"Mr. Jamison will continue to work with the NHL and the City of Glendale to close a deal that will keep the Coyotes in the Valley.

"Although there is no set timetable, hopefully it will be soon. The Coyotes will continue to be owned by the NHL and nothing changes for our organization."

It is almost unthinkable. He "is" the Washington Capitals. But over the last week or so we have seen that even Alex Ovechkin can be the subject to trade rumors. Get off to a slow start under a new coach and before you know it, they are shipping you off to Winnipeg.

If I have learned anything in my time doing this it is anything, and I mean ANYTHING, can happen. Sure, there are definitely some things that you would never expect to happen, and probably won't. .But to think anyone outside the situation knows all the factors would be foolish. .

It sure doesn't feel like the Caps would move their franchise player. Consider this: When Ovechkin came out and said he would be playing in the next Olympics in Russia even if the NHLers weren't Caps owner Ted Leonsis surprisingly backed Ovechkin and said he would allow him to leave the team mid-season to do it!

Leonsis and AO are just that close. But the rumors are out there, and not just on the Internet. Even some scouts are talking about it in media cafeterias before games. One scout said to me, "Well, you can be sure they aren't shopping him, but you can also be sure other teams are going to come and kick the tires when they see weakness in the Caps game."

The main team that seems associated with these rumors around the NHL is the Jets.

So we can debate whether or not the Capitals could trade Alexander Ovechkin but SHOULD they?

In my opinion, they should not unless there is something else going on something behind-the-scenes that we don't know about. You will simply never get fair value for player like Ovechkin, especially in a down season.

What do you think?

Yup. Now you know how how the wild rumors come about.

The latest: Phil the Thrill to Edmonton for Yakupov, Nugent-Hopkins, Eberle and 12 first rounders. Edmonton is trying to get Toronto to agree to this...but, the Leaves are very stubborn.

Rangers trade Mike Rupp to Wild

http://espn.go.com/new-york/nhl/stor...ld-two-players

By Katie Strang | ESPNNewYork.com

NEW YORK -- The New York Rangers have traded veteran forward Mike Rupp to Minnesota in exchange for forwards Darroll Powe and Nick Palmieri.

The 33-year-old Rupp had four goals, one assist and 97 penalty minutes in 60 games for the Rangers last season.

Powe will join the Rangers, while Palmieri will likely be with the team's AHL affiliate in Hartford, Conn.

Just for you, Chris. From CBS Sports:

Penguins star Evgeni Malkin appeared to have violently struck Staal in the helmet with his stick. Staal was in the process of falling when Malkin, from a prone position, swung his stick in Staal's direction. Malkin was not penalized on the play.

Staal, who sat out 36 games last season with a concussion, was described as incredulous after the game.

While addressing the media after New York's 3-0 loss to the Pens, Staal said, “He tomahawked me right on top of the helmet. He dazed me. I don't know how that's not called. I understand we're battling in front of the net, but he's hitting down like he's chopping wood across my head."

Maybe Malkin was just testing the flex on his stick.

With no news coming out of the department of player safety in regard to this incident as of yet, it appears Malkin will escape any punishment. That is a bit of a surprise considering previous high-sticking incidents that have come under review.

The NHL suspended Pierre-Marc Bouchard for two games early last season for a high-sticking incident against Columbus' Matt Calvert. Calvert, who was struck in the face, was injured on the play. However, in that instance, safety czar Brendan Shanahan asserted "Regardless of where the slash was intended or whether Calvert's lifting of the stick steered the slash up into the face area, Bouchard is responsible for his stick and the end result."

Due to the force with which Malkin made contact with Staal and the fact that it struck Staal's head, this definitely deserves another look from Shanahan and company. Even if Malkin didn't intend to hit Staal's head, he is supposed to be responsible for his stick and the result.

You're not doin' it right Yummy, put these on and watch it again, you'll see quite clearly that Malkin is behaving like the Queen at a tea party while Staal was a classless commoner.

I'm not defending it since I don't know if he meant to swing the stick at his helmet, but Staal was fucking raping him repeatedly, you guys act like Staal was just skating by and got smacked in the teeth with a stick, either way, there's no excuse for swinging a stick like that, nor is there for slashing and diving on someone, so they're both assholes

So, look...don't take it personally because Malkin is NOT related to you. So, it's not an insult at you or your family, okay?

But, if you want me to find ANOTHER feed (with different angles and different replays), I'll cheerfully do so. But, you are completely wrong. Watch the replay again: Malkin starts the entire thing by giving Staal a "nice" hit...this is the same Staal that had head injuries before. Stall then goes after Malkin with one shot at Malkin's stick. Not his head. Malkin's stick. So, maybe Geno's hockey sticks are made of platinum and are precious...Then, watch the play...it continues and then, we get around to the tomahawk chop from Malkin to Staal's head.

Intentional...? Sorry, dude, that's some really unintentional aiming if you ask me then.

So, unless my glasses and eyes need readjustment, Staal was NOT, as you put it, farking raping Malkin. If anything, it was the other way around.

But, hey...just sayin'.

Henry, I don't think he's related to me, however I've watched every shift of the guy's career in the NHL. He gets cheapshotted every single game. Guys come after him because he's one of the most skilled players in the league, and the reigning league MVP. Even BBQ Sauce Boudreau pointed out on 24/7 that if you keep attacking him, he will retaliate. You see 1 shift where he retaliates and call him cheap, I see every shift where guys go after him, and I see just about every shift where he does not retaliate, and skates away. However yes, when people push him and get in his face, he will push back. I already stated that there's no excuse for him swinging a stick like that, but I don't think it is typical of Malkin to try to injure someone, Staal fell down as he was being hit, and took exception to it, but if you think that he wasn't coming after Malkin, then you're blind as well. And FYI, neither of those broadcasts were the Pittsburgh feed, they blackout all other broadcasts including the NHL network for local coverage as per contract, as I said, I didn't even see this until you guys started posting links to it.

Staal is too afraid of altercations due to a recent concussion, so suggesting Staal decided to pounce on Malkin is laughable. It's hockey, hard checks are expected and are accepted, tomahawking a guy on the head is not.

Malkin is an angel when compared to Cindy. This girl continually cuts across the goalie lines, does cheap shoves when refs are not looking, tries to draw nonexistent penalties, and that's in every game.
