From TSN regarding Doughty...
Sources have told TSN that Los Angeles Kings GM Dean Lombardi has made it clear to Drew Doughty's agent, Don Meehan, that the Kings have no intention of paying Doughty more than Anze Kopitar's $6.8 million annual average salary.
It's believed Doughty wants a minimum of $7 million per season, but the Kings are offering seven years at $6.8 million per, so the question is: Who's going to blink?
Given the possibility of a deal not getting done before training camp opens and Doughty holding out, the temperature inside the Kings offices is rising to the point it's been suggested the Kings may pull their offer by the end of the week.
Perhaps less stressful times for Toronto's Luke Schenn, who also remains a notable restricted free agent still in need of a new contract.
All involved in Schenn's negotiation with the Leafs remain optimistic a deal will be reached this week; however Zach Bogosian's two-year, $5 million dollar deal with the Winnipeg Jets could slow progress if the Leafs use Bogosian as a comparable.
It's believed Schenn is seeking compensation similar to the $3.9 million New York Rangers defenceman Marc Staal is earning.
Somewhere between Staal and Bogosian seems to be a good fit for Luke Schenn.

@ LA playing Russian roulette with the future of the franchise.
Threatening to not pay him for the pre-season time missed = stupid and petty on Deano's part. I'm beginning to think LA would be better off without Lombardi.

Then again, there is some logic to his madness...it is true that Doughty had ONE superstar year. The rest, while still good, may not be enough to truly justify his asking price?
Just saying...I dunno.

Be serious...the kid has been offered serious coin....the sticking point IMHO is the length of the contract not the coin.
Kings are huge on D depth, Deano can afford to sit and play the waiting game.
Drew is and will be a superstar for many moons, but the kid is young and did not have a fantastic season last year....he got a concussion, and just played like a young kid that his is, and made some kid-like mistakes. He will be signed eventually, he will become great, and more than likely win a Norris or two before his new contract expires.
The Kings are better off without Deano That made my Monday...thanks dom~!

So an offer that puts him in the Top 5 defense man salaries is not enough?!?!?

I'm not arguing about what is and isn't enough. These guys all all overpaid anyway. Its him making those idiotic statements about lowering his offer because of camp time missed. That's bush league stuff and an NHL GM should know better. Pisses off the player and makes him look like a tool to every other player in the league. Shut up and get it done without making yourself sound petty.
And what exactly has Deano accomplished? You make it seem like he's a genius GM that's won 4 cups.

Deano accomplished nothing with this team....he's bush league all around.
The franchise is on its way down hill.....everyone everywhere knows the Kings have not been steadily building, and Deano has been pissing away the future...nobody is signed long term........the Kings will not make the playoffs...this team is doomed. Deano is a failure.

You are correct, Deano has done nothing. The Kings are no where any better than when Dumpster Diving Dave Taylor was GM and the Kings did not make the playoffs for many many moons. The Kings have no top tier talent from the draft, no prospects, no depth. The Kings goaltending is still as horrible as it always has been over the history of the franchise, Quick/Bernier tandem is bush league. The Defense is bush league too. JMFJ, Doughty, Green, Scuderi, Mitchel....what a bunch of bums. The Defense depth/prospects are pathetic. Forwards...clearly bush league too. Kopitar, Richards...horrible centers for a one two punch down the middle, Brown never hits anyone.
Deano accomplished nothing with this team....he's bush league all around.

He has done a good job until now?!?!
This is the best team he has put on the ice since he has been with the Kings....put down the bong!
Clearly he has accomplished A LOT!
Tell me, how is your GM doing?...and by golly, he won a Cup as a GM!!!
By your logic, HOF players who never won a Cup have not accomplished anything?
Fantastic GM's that build Cup contending teams from the ground up, but never have a Cup winner have not accomplished anything?

Like I said, he's done a good job until now, nobody can deny that. But unless he finishes the job, he'll just be another forgotten GM that failed.
I've never heard a comment about not paying a player for time missed. IMO that was just dumb and petty and doesn't help the situation at all. He should be above that. And for the record, that's the only thing Deano's done that I don't like, so I'll admit my comment about him not being right for the job may have been a bit much. But it got you going so mission accomplished

Doughty's hold out has everything to do with the NHLPA and Meehan.
The new CBA is gonna clamp down heavily on max salaries for 3-4 year players. The NHLPA & Meehan want to raise the bar as high as possible before the new CBA comes around.
In this game of "chicken" it will be Doughty who blinks, and not the Kings.
I could be wrong, but in the end it will be Drew who will look like a foolish primadonna, and not the Kings. FWIW...Fan polls of Kings fans show that +80% of Kings fans think Doughty has been offered more than plenty and that ownership should offer him no more.
...and they are correct. Being paid top 5 defenseman $$$ Drew is more than what he is worth.
...and as far as being paid "less per day".....What Deano is saying is don't expect to hold out until December/January, and expect the same deal that was offered before July 1. He's not going to nickle and dime him per day per se, but it's the point that the longer you wait, the potential for lower $$$ will materialize.

I am so relieved I'm out of some hockey argument for once.
But, if I were Doughty, I would consider looking at the deals Huge Schenn and Bogosian signed and go from there. He's not worth Stamkos/Toews/Keith/Weber-type money...yet. He will get it if he continues his trajectory, definitely...
Anyhow...just me.

Agree with everything....but if he pisses him off, he won't sign long term and will become a UFA and end up in Toronto. So is it worth it? Keep everything behind closed doors.

Deano spoke directly with him late last week, and all was amicable.
It's Meehan who is the one who would get bent.

The video that NHL sent out to the teams showing what is a legal hit and what is a illegal hit where the head was targeted is on nhl.com. I would embed it but I don't seem to have the option. Matt Cooke made it into the video to help us see what an illegal hit is.
The video is on www.nhl.com on the main page under the title of "2011-2012 rule changes" if you want to watch. I'm curious how Shanahan will do in as the disciplinarian.
