The sizzle in the Steak
So you'd be ok with seeing that more often? Every game? Every goal?
I wonder why the NFL put a stop to things like this?
What isn't being mentioned enough about this particular celebration is that it was his 50th. I've heard this story talked about 5 or 6 times on the weekend and not once was the fact that it was his 50th brought up. That obviously played a part.
I'd personally have a real problem if he began doing this every goal or every 4th or 5th goal.

I'll take that as a yes.

REPORT: GILLETT CONSIDERS SELLING CANADIENS
The Montreal Canadiens could be going up for sale, reports La Presse in Montreal.
The newspaper, citing Canadiens president Pierre Boivin, reported on Monday owner George Gillett is considering options for many of his assets, including the legendary franchise.
"We're not hiding it; we're going through a very difficult economic period," Boivin told La Presse.
"The Gillett family has retained the services of financial advisers to assess various strategic alternatives to optimize the value of its corporate assets," said Boivin in a statement on Monday. "In Canada, the family has retained the services of BMO Capital Markets and the process is underway."
Forbes Magazine ranked the Canadiens as the NHL's third most valuable team back in October. The magazine estimated the club's worth to be $334 million.
There were reports the club would be placed up for sale late last year, but Gillett and the Canadiens denied their accuracy.
Gillett purchased the Canadiens and the Bell Centre back in 2001 for $181 million. He also co-owns Liverpool soccer club and the Gillett Evernham racing team in NASCAR.
The Canadiens are celebrating their 100th Season, but things have not gone as hoped for the storied orgaization. The team is in danger of missing the playoffs as they sit in eighth place in the Eastern Conference, one point up on the Florida Panthers in ninth.
A steady stream of off-ice issues and on-ice struggles have hurt the Canadiens this season. General manager Bob Gainey fired head coach Guy Carbonneau earlier this month, but the club's fortunes have not changed. The Canadiens have only one win under Gainey over the six games he has been behind the bench.

Group Buy?
Apparently the Gillette family is in some financial peril and is possibly looking to sell anything it can.

Read it again.
His celebration is no big deal. People getting their panties in a bunch over nothing.
The NHL can use some excitement....especially here in the U.S.
The NHL can use an iconic player(s)...especially here in the U.S.
The NHL has a HUGE marketing problem in the U.S.
I have no problem with what he did. Big goals should get big celebrations.
An "average" goal...not so much.

I agree, and if you go back a page you'd see that my panties were never in a bunch. Although I still think a Bolt should have roughed him up some. Only potential I see for problems is if he makes of habit of it.
I do love all the Cherry bashing from you Yanks though. What's funny is after being an active participant in this thread for the last several years most of your hockey opinions and thoughts are pretty much bang on with his 90% of the time, which is almost opposite on my thoughts on him.
Before you bash him for the very few sound bites you see and hear, try and listen to him more frequently.

Back from da burgh.
Saturday's game was kinda boring. Took some nice pics of Mellon during the day, I'll post them up later tonite. Too bad we lost to the flyers. I DO NOT want to play them first round. Not sure why everyone I talk to wants to play them. I'd be happy with the 6 seed and the caps.
And I don't mind Don Cherry. Granted, I only get to listen to him once a week or so, but he's entertaining.

I see no issue with it either.. I don't even mind a single player doing a celebration. When you add in props and other players.. That's when I have a issue.

Has anyone heard about the Carey Price rumor? I've heard some people saying that the reason his on ice play has been so poor is because of some off ice issues. Apparently he knocked up or fucked over some girl who's father is a mob boss. I have no link to support this, just dressing room hearsay.

WTF is with Habs players with mob ties...?

Speaking of celebrations, wasn't Bernie Nichols and Tiger Williams also players who had very showy antics when they scored...?

I thought the showiest one in that "top 10" vid had to be Selanne tossing his glove up and pretending to shoot it down. I thought it was a relatively unique way to celebrate. I definitely would have voted for it over Hejduks swimming celebration since I had witnessed Anson Carter do that same celebration several years earlier when he played for the Bruins.
My only problem with Ovechkins celebration was that it was lame, it kinda looked like he was bowing down to his stick doing the "we're not worthy" routine from Waynes World. If you are going to have an "over the top" celebration at least make recognizable so you don't have to explain what it was that you were doing.

I feel the need...
I get a kick out of how he luvs his Canadian-Toughies and calls out the Euro-Pansies. {mule dropped w/ one punch}
He's entertaining, colorful and whenever I get tempted to hate on him, just look him up when he's announcing the latest casualty from Afghanistan - he gets choked up, its authentic -- hard to bash a guy like that.

And dude, I'm just doing my part to give my team a chance to win. It didn't even work that well when I REALLY did it against SG81 back in the regular season. Although, wstevens really did school me when he employed it against me back in the early part (I think the final was 11-2 for him)...
If you're -ing me about what you thought was a repeat against SG81 last week, I explained it already. I had injuries I had to deal with in a close matchup (sure, the final was 9-4 but it was closer than the score)...And besides, it's not like I did it against you.

Oh yeah...what ABOUT you. You start rolling in with 6-7 players playing each night starting tomorrow, that's what.
I'll be lucky if I have 4-5 players on the roster against you for most of the week.
Who's the retarded schedule makers that had the Pens playing only twice this week!??

That's what I hate about just about every sportscaster on ESPN as such. Boomer and Stuart Scott are the worst. And more and more are trying to do the same.
Completely agree, I never said I don't like celebrations, I said Obitchkin's premeditated bs is ridiculous and that if he were in the NFL he would be flagged for excessive celebration. I never said I didn't like players celebrating goals, I like when players react to scoring a goal, just not planned bs, it's just like pulling out a cell phone from the field goal to me
Did anyone here bother to watch Cherry on Saturday night?
Cliffs: Ovechkin is the best player in the world and should rise above doing stuff like that and show class. You're better than that.
No attack, no mention of him being European. Even called him the best player in the world. The man has a point.

Hoooookay. Wow, talk about a lot of spilt milk over a guy's celebration for his 50th goal. He doesn't do it for every one he scores...so, meh. And besides, there are players who have done over-the-top celebrations before in hockey. And in all cases, they are not with regularity...
Anyhow, any fearless picks for the playoff teams? Which ones are in? Out?

It looks like the top seven are pretty much in for both Conferences. Looks like the Habs want to give the eighth spot the Panthers but it doesn't seem they wanted. Looks like about eight games left for most teams.

The 8th Seed position in the Western conference is going to be interesting for me. I'm kinda chuckling at the poor team's who draw Detroit and SJ as their 1st round opponents...
That being said, you just never know in the playoffs and I wonder if the Meh Things' so-so goaltending will haunt them...
