Sharks nab Wings assistant McLellan

Surprised no one has posted this yet.

Detroit Red Wings assistant coach Todd McLellan will be introduced Thursday at a 2 p.m. ET news conference as the San Jose Sharks’ new head coach.

“Todd McLellan has an excellent track record and has had success at every level of coaching in his career,” Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said in a statement. “He comes from one of the top organizations in all of sports and has been exposed to some of the brightest hockey minds in the game.”

Kwame Kilpatrick is a douche a little background from the Tribune:

Kilpatrick has been mired for months in a text-messaging sex scandal and criticism over an $8.4 million whistle-blowers' lawsuit settlement. He and his former top aide face perjury and other charges stemming from testimony they gave last year in the whistle-blowers' trial.

The City Council expects to begin forfeiture of office proceedings against Kilpatrick for alleged violations of the city charter. Gov. Jennifer Granholm also is looking into a request by the nine-member council to remove him for misconduct.

Kilpatrick repeatedly has said the council's motives are political and that he expects to be vindicated of the criminal charges.

I liked melrose from the get go...the man took the kings to the finals in his first yr in 93 then quit. I don't know why ppl don't like him but what can u do. I wanted him to come to LA but he is prolly gonna take the TB job (if he already hasn't). As for a coach, I don't know who is available...the previous TB coach, ummm...Tortorella? I think thats his name. I think he would do. He enstills discipline and hard work and the Kings could learn a thing or two from him.

Almost...?

Backstrom would've needed to score 200 goals if he were to even pass Kane and Toews.

Backstrom is aight...but, when a player is on Ovechkin's line all year, hey...I think we've got a Rob Brown here!

FYI Melrose did not quit...he got fired. He was a one trick pony, with a good team, and alot of luck in '93. I guess you forget all the "Meeeeelroooooose" chants at the forum when they were failing horribly the following seasons.

No Kings fan wants Bmel....you must be a quack fan.

Tortorella is almost like Crow part deux. Another screaming coach.
They Kings don't want this...they want a "teacher" for the young kids.

I think the route the Kings will go is either get a coach from the minors, or promote
assistant coach Mike Johnston.

...but Tippett would be Suite!

Luck or no luck, the guy got the team to the finals...tell me another kings coach that did that after him...you can't. As for your other comment, please don't get me started. You have your reasons of not liking him and I have mine for liking him. That doesnt make me a "quack fan". I agree that the kings need a teacher right now with their re-building team but they also need a strict one that with show some disicipline. If you get coaches like Crawford and Murray (even though Murray was a good strict coach but like Tippett couldn't get the Kings past the 2nd round of the playoffs) Kings probably will not be a contender in the finals for a long time. My 2 cents.

This might be of interest to some. I'm sure its of no surprise that the NHL experimenting with different types of nets to increase goal scoring. Last night I had the opportunity to play on a experimental net.

I play hockey at a rink the Maple Leafs use as their practice facility and this past week the NHL was there with some goalies trying out smaller equipment, and different nets. So for some reason one of these nets was on the ice for our ice time yesterday.

The net is standard size but the difference is in the shape of the posts and cross bar. Instead of being totally round, the inside of the posts and cross bar are all angled inward towards the net. So if you hit the inside of the post or cross bar the puck will be more likely to go in because it angles inwards.

It was a cool idea but if they're going to make changes it should be to the size of goalie equipment.

While interesting, I agree changing the pipes is the wrong move. What's next basketball makes the net 9' tall or baseball players get bigger bats? If anything the goalie equipment should be regulated to the size of a certain year, say 1982 or something like that. I would also rather see them open the ice up by going to olympic size before messing with the nets, but that won't happen for many logistical reasons. This "new design sounds kind of like the movement to make golf cups larger

i'm not sure why people want to see the NHL play on an olympic size rink. first and foremost, general sports fans want to see a fast paced and high energy game, by going to a bigger rink you eliminate that. also a lot of NCAA college kids who go to NHL say the game gets 10x harder because of the smaller rink. you have less time to react. this to me shows a higher skill level on the smaller ice surface. shrugs.

if they want to increase goal scoring i think they should change up goalie pads, i'm tired of seeing a goalie that is double his own width in leg pads. they need to evaluate what they call goalie interference. the net idea is kind of cool but it will never pass. my opinion if they are going to mess with the net, they should just increase the height of it. goalies tended to be smaller, now it's pretty normal to see a 6'2 guy between the pipes.

It was luck....Melrose was pathetic as a coach the 2 years after the cup run...the stats don't lie.

I think you forgot our Power Play & Penalty kills stats when Tippett was assistant coach. I wonder why Dallas took him as head coach.

Andy Murray?...please...this is the guy that made adults professional hockey players write an essay "I play my best hockey when..." Remember that gem?

Crow was a poor coach choice...add to that Beachball's baggage that came with him. Dean knows he made a horrible choice.....now he has a chance to fix it.

At this point I'd rather have Tom Webster throwing sticks out on the ice versus Crow screaming at the kids, and forcing kids out of their roles that got them to the NHL (see JMFJ)

Probably not of much interest to anyone other than me and maybe Yummy if he can catch a home broadcast but a anyway. The previous guy the Hawks had was just terrible an I for one really like Eddie O. as a color guy.
Chicago Blackhawks President John McDonough announced today that Pat Foley will return as the team’s television play-by-play broadcaster.

“We are thrilled to have Pat Foley back in our organization,” said McDonough. “His voice is synonymous with Blackhawks hockey and it resonates loudly to our entire fan base.”

Foley will partner with Eddie Olczyk to broadcast all Blackhawks games, home and away, in HD next season on Comcast SportsNet and WGN Channel 9.

Post Flyers send rights to Prospal to Lightning

From CNNSI...

The Philadelphia Flyers traded the rights to left wing Vaclav Prospal to Tampa Bay for a seventh-round pick on Wednesday.

Prospal, a free agent, recorded four goals and 10 assists in 18 games for the Flyers last season. He added three goals and 10 assists in 17 playoff games.

"Vinny really didn't express much of an interest in coming back and playing for us next season," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. "His heart is elsewhere."

The Flyers will receive Nashville's 2008 seventh-rounder from Tampa Bay and a conditional pick in 2009.

The Flyers acquired Prospal, 33, from the Lightning in February in exchange for defenseman Alexandre Picard and a 2009 second-round pick. Prospal has 179 goals and 375 assists in 792 games over seasons with five teams.

So many rumors about deals and trades around here.

If the Kings are gonna pull of a deal, it will be sometime between today and before the start of the draft tomorrow.

Cammalleri and Visnovsky are being talked about alot.

Ray Emery is not coming to LA. King's are not interested.
The Malkin talk is all smoke and mirrors.

The Kings have received more than 1/2 dozen offers for their #2 pick.
