Could you believe that the cap is now raised to $50.3 million? I thought the lock out was supposed to slow down the player salaries? Is the league really doing that well?

I'm not crazy about the length of the contract, but $4M per year for a guy who scored 40 goals isn't a bad deal.

Kings pick up Nagy, Handzus and Calder
Looking to add some much-needed scoring punch, the Los Angeles Kings today signed forwards Ladislav Nagy and Michal Handzus and Kyle Carler.
The 28-year-old Nagy played in 80 regular season games in 2006-07, posting 12 goals and 55 points. Nagy began the season with the Phoenix Coyotes, playing in 55 games before being traded to the Dallas Stars at the trade deadline.
Nagy was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the 1997 entry draft. After two seasons in St. Louis, he was traded to Phoenix in 2001 with Handzus, Jeff Taffe and a first round pick in the 2001 draft for Keith Tkachuk.
Nagy has played in 397 regular season games over his six-year career, posting 106 goals and 285 points.
The 30-year-old Handzus suffered a knee injury after just eight games last season and did not play again. He had three goals and five assists.
In 517 career NHL games with the Blackhawks, Flyers, Coyotes and Blues, Handzus has totals of 115 goals, 185 assists and a +51 rating.
Calder, 28, appeared in 78 games with the Red Wings and Flyers last season and had totals of 14 goals and 21 assists

Calder will be a goodie if he plays like how he did when he was a Hawk. As for Handzus, he's (ironic that he's signed with the guy he was traded for in Calder) a slight question mark esp. coming off of that major surgery.

Oilers protest Nylander signing
The Edmonton Oilers issued a statement on Tuesday, claiming they had come to a contract ageement with free agent centre Michael Nylander, who subsequently signed with Washington.
CBC Sports
Calling the situation, "unfortunate and unprecedented," the Oilers said general manager Kevin Lowe agreed on Sunday to a multi-year deal with Mike Gillis, Nylander's agent, who in turn confirmed in writing that an agreement had been reached.
Edmonton never received signed contracts from Nylander and Gillis and on Monday Washington general manager George McPhee announced that Nylander had agreed to a four-year deal with the Capitals, believed to be worth $19.5 million US.
"The Oilers can find no precedent for such conduct in our history," the statement read. "The Oilers are examining and pursuing every course of action available in the best interest of the team and our fans."
Edmonton also claimed its subsequent free agent dealings on Monday were made under the assumption that Nylander was an Oiler.
Nylander set career highs in goals (26), assists (57) and points (83) for the New York Rangers last season.
The 34-year-old Nylander is in his native Sweden, and the case may also be complicated by the fact Gillis has been representing the player for only a short time.
The New York Post reported in early June that Nylander fired Paul Theofanous after learning the agent had agreed in principle to a new deal with the Rangers without consulting him.
Soon after, the Rangers decided to target free agents Chris Drury and Scott Gomez instead of re-signing Nylander.
Nylander played for the Capitals between 2002 and 2004. In stints with Hartford, Calgary, Tampa Bay, Chicago, Boston, New York and Washington, the 15-year NHL veteran posted 609 points (189 goals, 420 assists) in 808 career games - including seven 50-point seasons.

Penguins sign Crosby to five-year extension
.
Peter Diana, Post-Gazette
The Penguins have signed center Sidney Crosby to a five-year contract extension. The deal is worth $43.5 million, an annual salary-cap hit of $8.7 million.
It will take effect in the 2008-09 season.
"Sidney has proven himself to be a dynamic player and team leader at a very young age, and it is exciting news for our franchise and our fans to have him under contract for the next six seasons, through 2013," said Ray Shero, the Penguins executive vice president and general manager.
"When you've got a guy who leads the league in scoring and wins the MVP award at the age of 19, you know have someone very special. But Sid also is a tremendous asset for this organization as a leader in the dressing room, and as the face of our franchise in the community. And the fact that he wants to be here long-term is a great statement about the city of Pittsburgh and our organization," Shero said.
Crosby is the youngest player in NHL history to record 100 and 200 career points. He was named captain of the Penguins on May 31, making him the youngest team captain in league history.
"I want to be here for a long time," Crosby said. "Individual honors and scoring championships are great, but my No. 1 goal is to win the Stanley Cup. I'd love to be a part of bringing the Cup back here to Pittsburgh."
More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Well, I guess now my only shot of hoping to see him on the Hawks is if the Pens trade him...
