New Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford has taken his time since being hired to begin the search for a new head coach to replace the fired Dan Bylsma.
Rutherford as also been quoted as wanting a head coach with a presence, someone who the Penguins players will respect right off the bat.
With that in mind it seemed quite odd that Wilkes Barre/Scranton head coach John Hynes has been the only candidate seriously linked to the Penguins job for the past couple of weeks, as Hynes has been the only coaching candidate that Rutherford has mentioned by name.
That is until now.
TSN’s Darren Dreger reported Tuesday that former NHL head coaches Ron Wilson and Marc Crawford will both interview with Rutherford this week.
Wilson, 59, may be the better candidate even though his last stint as a head coach in Toronto (2008-12) didn’t go so well.
However Wilson has had pretty good success in stints with Anaheim (1993-97) Washington (1997-2002) and San Jose (2002-08). Overall Wilson has compiled a regular-season record of 648-561-91, plus 101 ties thrown in.
His teams are known to have an aggressive style of play, but it hasn’t really translated into a lot of playoff success as Wilson’s teams have made the playoffs in only eight of 18 years on the bench. However he did reach the Stanley Cup Finals once with Washington and has coached Team USA in the Olympics twice, earning a silver medal in 2010.
As for Crawford, the 53-year old just completed his second season coaching the ZSC Lions in Switzerland.
He has also coached four different NHL franchises: Quebec/Colorado, Vancouver, Los Angeles and Dallas.
His last two stints in LA and Dallas ended quickly after two seasons each, but Crawford has won a Stanley Cup (1996). However other than that he hasn’t had much playoff success in other places outside of Denver. His Canucks teams made the playoffs four consecutive seasons but won only one series in that span.
Crawford boasts a career 549-421-77 record with 101 ties.
However throw former Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Stevens into the mix as Stevens is expected to interview for the job and it looks like Rutherford is serious about hiring an experienced NHL coach to try and right the ship in Pittsburgh immediately.

But, his record with the Flyers was not great. At least Crawford has tasted Cup before...and run a star-studded team before. Of the choices, I'd give him a go maybe.
Anyhow, I eagerly wait for Moog to storm into this thread to tell me I'm horridly wrong.

I gave Moogy a new avy and everything, and he's not around to tell us we're wrong

I think...of the coaching choices, whoever they end up with, it comes down to what the Pens do to upgrade team-wise. Again, the changing of the bench and front office is still just steps 1 and 2 in a larger plan Super Mario has in mind I think to making the Pens a true contender again.
Any team with Malkin and Crosby instantly have like a HUGE head-start anyhow...it's not like they need to rebuild. Just probably a better depth in the lower lines and upgrade the blueline assuming Martin and Letang stay.
Perhaps Fleury will be traded too. Not sure who would line up for him but he is talented (OMG, SORRY...NOT AS AMAZINGLY GODLY AS QUICK OKAY, MOOG?!??) and so, there will be interested teams, I think.

Ack, Rounder: http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Ryan-...epth/177/60690
Sure, Ryan Wilson is just a blogger, but hey OMG...I'm not the only person who thinks name-brand goalies don't necessarily equate to Cup success. Let me level that comment (before Moog really storms back and tells me how WRONG I AM) that the goalie needs to be decent still...not an all-star/Vezina winner...but, good enough.
And with the Pens cap numbers, I would probably think they would HAVE to build a la the Detroit/Chicago/Bowman model.
<---- Waits for Moog to tell me Bowman's model is on drugs and I'm very very very very very wrong.

Pens have chosen a coach, no official announcement yet, but my money is on Wilson. Apparently the Kings wouldn't even let Stevens interview for the job

I'm sure Moog will be along immediately after the announcement to tell us how it's the wrong choice
Senior Moderator
You know he will.
Wilson's numbers: 1401 games...648W-561L-101T-91OTL
So, the numbers aren't horrid. Initially, I'm not sure if he's the best choice...but, FWIW, aside from a winning record (like Wilson), what did we think of Sutter, Coach Q, or Julien before their Cup wins?
So, let's see. At least he's not Torts.
Senior Moderator
Although, Wilson's playoff record against the Pink Things is not great...I think he lost to them 3 times with 3 different teams.
Anyhow, let's see now what Rutherford does with the roster. Big off-season awaits for the Pens, IMO.

I'm gonna bet it's that douchebag Samuelsson as if I needed more reasons to dislike Pittsburgh. He'll teach Neal and Malkin how throw a real knee check.

Glad to see you and Milberry are still upset about something that happened 20+ years ago. BTW, Neal won't be here next year, he's trade bait
Senior Moderator
You think he'll fetch a high return? I know he scores lots but kinda hafta wonder if he has the Rob-Brown-syndrome...meaning, playing with an ultra-elite player (Malkin)...

He's a 20 goal scorer the last 5 years, Malkin definitely made him a top 6 forward, he never had 30 or 40 goal seasons until playing with him, but Crosby also taught Neal how to shoot better and worked with him on switching sticks. Will he be as effective somewhere else? Probably not, unless he has an elite center feeding him passes all day, but he's the only contract we have that can fetch a return that doesn't have a no-trade thanks to Ray Ray
